Did anyone see that coming? Wonder if this will help some of those non-compliant web sites finally get a clue, as the options for Windows users continue to expand? biggrin.gif

I installed the beta and it crashes when attempting to start it up.  Fortunately, Apple includes an uninstaller that restores Safari to the previous version and configuration.

Downloaded it and installed.  Looks and feels the same.  No crashes yet, thank goodness.  But, no real speed boost from the previous version imo.  All I really want is for Apple to fix the severe memory leak problem.  Will report back later regarding this.

Back for my update....lol.... Only took 30 minutes to get a little more data.

Memory leak?  Yeah, it's still there in a big way.  Only 30 minutes and Safari is up to 200 mb.

It does seem a bit faster.  Not exactly sure how or why.  But, it seems faster.

Too bad about the memory leak...I too was hoping it would be fixed. I just looked at my Activity Monitor and was astonished to find Safari has gobbled a GB! Never seen it do that before. dry.gif I wasn't running much else, so hadn't noticed any particular slowdown. Guess it's time to quit and restart it. Emptying the cache and closing a bunch of windows only got it down to 723MB! tongue.gif

Downloaded it for both my OS 10.4.9 and Windows XP partition.  I like it, does seem faster.

Safari 3.0 is much faster than 2.xxx., however it won't work with 1Passwd and it breaks some widgets.   oops.gif

Just read this on MacFixIt:
QUOTE
What gets installed by the Safari 3 Beta package Installing Safari 3.0 does much more than simply replace the Safari application (in /Applications) with a newer copy. It also does a transplant of the WebKit framework (relied upon by Safari and other applications to render page HTML content), the JavaScript framework, and -- surprisingly -- replaces the Dock with a new version. As such, you may experience problems with applications other than Safari after installing this beta release. One particular area (as noted below) concerns the operation of Widgets, which are rendered by WebKit.

Fortunately, Apple has included an uninstaller (Safari3BetaUninstall.pkg) that will revert all components replaced by the Safari 3.0 beta installer with the Safari 2.x associated versions.
Did any of you notice any difference in your Dock? Thinking.gif Not sure what MFI means by "replaces the Dock". dntknw.gif

If you have any third party mods. of the Dock (Clear Dock, Transparent Dock etc.) you will notice a replacement back to the standard Dock.

If you have any third party modifications to Safari or third party Safari plug-ins you may expeirence problems w/ Safari 3 Beta.

Other problems may be seen in Widgets, the new Safari apparently does much more than simply change the app. Many WebKit frameworks are also modified and any app that relies on them may not work correctly or at all. Since I don't use Safari, Widgets or the Dock, I've seen none of the reported problems. Any PCer will probably not notice any problems as being "new", either, they seem to be satisfied with problems being part of using a computer. wallbash.gif tongue.gif

I dragged these comments off a page talking about one of the reasons Apple decided to release Safari/Win:

QUOTE
It’s not widely publicized, but those integrated search bars in web browser toolbars are revenue generators. When you do a Google search from Safari’s toolbar, Google pays Apple a portion of the ad revenue from the resulting page.

QUOTE
My somewhat-informed understanding is that Apple is currently generating about $2 million per month from Safari’s Google integration. That’s $25 million per year. If Safari for Windows is even moderately successful, it’s easy to see how that might grow to $100 million per year or more.

It seems faster to me, but more importantly, I can open Google Docs and Spreadsheets in Safari. I had to use Firefox before.

It's an interesting move to make Safari compatible with Windows.

I can't begin to predict the effect, but the genie is out of the bottle now! bottled.gif

Just an update.

I have now uninstalled the beta due to various reasons.

First, the memory leak is not solved, if not, it maybe worse.

And then the handling of certain links and/or buttoned links.  They just don't work within the beta.

This Safari beta will need to be refined a whole lot more before being useable in my eyes.  Speed is not everything if the parts are broken and you got a leaking transmission.

Hopefully when released the problems will be addressed.

Apple has already released a security update for the Windows version.

http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/06/14/safari/index.php

They've already had one million downloads in the first two days it's been available. Can't help but wonder how many of those were curious Mac users downloading it to use in Parallels or BootCamp! wink.gif It's the only place I could run it - no longer possessing a Windoze-only machine, and I'll probably try it some day, just to see what it looks like.

There's an interesting view on why Apple ported Safari from OS X to Windows. What's Apple's Safari strategy?
QUOTE("iTWire")
Whether 75 or 85 percent of Mac users actually use Safari is neither here nor there. Even if the Macintosh's share of the market is growing, current levels of use are not enough to encourage many web designers and developers to check that their pages work with Safari unless their target market is particularly Mac oriented or especially vocal.

I'm not going to get into a debate about which browser most closely supports the relevant standards, but as long as there are any significant differences in the way major browsers handle the code they're fed, minority browsers like Safari are going to be a nuisance that many web developers would prefer to overlook.

Speed Download apparently does not work with the beta.

Then I read that the Search bar only has two choices; Google and/or Yahoo. Two choices? Wow! Further reading indicates that, if you're using a Mac, you don't even get that many! The Yahoo 'choice' seems to be missing on the Mac version!

Is it still true that Safari has only one choice for searching? wallbash.gif Why? I just assumed that all modern browsers had dozens of choices for searching. dntknw.gif Amazing...
