Title: How to Eliminate an Obsolete "Menulet"

Hi guys,

I just activated my new Verizon DSL. The CD and/or web activation would not work for OS 10.1 without the assistance of a Verizon Tech, who guided me through the process while on the telephone.

The problem (not such a big one) now is: He had me delete my Network Dialup location (the new location would not "stick" otherwise), and I had had it set to show in the Menu Bar. Since I no longer have that location, I don't know how to delete this now obsolete "menulet," as David Pogue calls it. Can you advise me how to do this? I'm sure that if all else fails there is a way to accomplish this in Terminal, the Unix interface, which I would be willing to take a crack at. Any advice?

Not sure it will work in 10.0.1, never used that version, however. If you have a "Network" Pref panel, use it and make sure the internal modem option is enabled in the list of "Network Port Configurations" ( we're not actually going to use that, we just need to be able to access it's screen ). Now the Modem should appear in the "Show: ...Configurations", Select it, click the "Modem" tab and deselect "Show modem status in the menu bar".

If you cannot access "Internal Modem", try creating a "New Location" and see if it appears in any list. If so, then use the above steps.

As long as you don't click the "Apply Now" or "Assist Me" buttons, you will never actually create a new location but you can access all the 'stuff' you want. And you may also get a dialog asking if you want to apply the changes you made, just click "No" and you'll be fine. Even if you accidentally apply any changes, you can always go back to the "Location" you already had set up for the DSL and re-apply it.

Hope this is close to what you have in 10.1.

Hi Francine, if you hold down the command button, (apple button) and drag the icon to the desktop the menulet will go poof!

Unless that changes the prefs also, it'll be back up there after the next restart. Here's hopin'!

However, you shouldn't be afraid of the Network Pref Panel, either. You can set up as many "locations" as you want and have nary a problem. You just select the one you want to be active and click the "Apply Now" button. You can have 'locations' set up for the internal modem, and external phone modem, cable, DSL, wireless, moon waves, etc. all at the same time. None will affect the others. You will simply have one 'location' active at a time. If this is a laptop, it could be a real time saver to have a friends internet connections settings installed so you can connect at the friends house, for example. And, there's no need to delete one location in order to set up another, even one using the same protocol.

I've restarted 3 times since then, and haven't seen it since the <<poof>>, lol. It's gone for good, so I guess the prefs did change.  But good to know about those locations...
