Thanks for the link, this time of year, I dont have time to look for these good articles.
And this was a good one.
With the iPhone coming up, and getting together with Google and more goodies on the threshold, Apple is flying!
Hang on to your AAPL, up 4.59 today if my old eyes read that correctly!

It was an interesting read, with a few things included that I wasn’t aware of, for instance the 5 year contract with at&t, I thought it was 2. Thanks for the link!

One suspicion I share with  John Heilemann is iPhone and the exclusive at&t network. Many a battle has been fought here with at&t as an individual Senior advocate and in cooperation with the state. My experience with cingular did not meet my expectations nor have I seen any improvements to their network as a result of the merger. It would be a pity to have the iPhone’s reputation hinged on a second rate network and unless at&t does some major upgrading I’m afraid the IPhone may be eaten alive.

I truly don't understand why Jobs chose to go with AT&T - even if they offered Apple the best deal, everyone knows that their network is seriously lacking. So you end up with this great piece of hardware, for which you paid an arm and a leg, and the darn thing just doesn't perform as advertised because of the lousy network? Seems like a penny-wise/pound-foolish decision to me. But what do I know?

Meanwhile, north of the border, Rogers, who are supposed to be partnering with Apple on the iPhone have remained mum about an actual launch date. On the bright side, they DO have either the best or one of the best networks in Canada. An ehMac.ca forum member emailed them a couple of days ago to ask about the iPhone and got the following less-than-informative response:

" Please be advised that Rogers will be offering the iPhone exclusively
in Canada"
" Launch date and pricing for Canada are not yet available"
" Other Canadian wireless carriers will not launch the iPhone, Rogers
will be the only Canadian wireless carrier to offer the iPhone"

In other words, nothing we didn't know already. God only knows what Rogers will charge for an iPhone plan...right now their web-browsing is frightfully expensive at 5¢ a kilobyte. My son spent about 5 minutes looking on ROGERS OWN WEBSITE for a ringtone to download and they charged us over $20!! I complained and they took the charge off as a one-time favor. Needless to say, I've now blocked the browsing capability, just in case someone does it accidentally.

I love the comment on Peter Rukovina's weblog:

"Obviously Rogers is positioning wireless data as a tool for millionaires and insane people."

I question the five year plan. I've only heard two.

ATT was the only one to give Apple control.

I've been told it won't be available in Iowa. Period.

Even if I wanted one.

The five years refers to the agreement that AT&T has with Apple to be the exclusive carrier for the iPhone.

ATT seems to be trying to upgrade service. Note that while this only applies to the 3G network at least it shows an attempt to improve.

Kris, they have never been on the cutting edge for their customers, they sold cell package deals to large industries that had low demands. They scoffed up cingular which really wasn't that much better and with such a broad customer base one would think they would invest the gains they made when they fired so many redundant employees but they did only what they absolutely had to do and still be called a service. They may be better in other parts of the country but my  experience with them in Colorado and Florida removed any doubt that I might have. Many of the people issued phones would use their own or buy their own because at&t never worked. Cingular in Florida was a total flop, their market corner was P2P for free so they captured the construction industry and soon lost it because of performance issues.

I think I am going to get the Samsung that I mentioned in the other thread, see how it works, the camera I am most concerned with at the moment.
I am keeping my present plan though.  Then later on, after other people comment on the iPhone and ATT service, I will go from there.
Notice that T stock is going up too.

My Motorola Razor is good in the area I live along with U.S. Cellular.

In thinking about AT&T as a choice.....I think it is a good one. Don't they own 4 different companies? Correct me if
I'm wrong...I don't keep up with this stuff. I'm just pragmatic and keep going with what works for me here in Wisconsin and it's mostly local and Chicago use.

When ATT originally broke up my home line was New Jersey Bell which later became part of Bell Atlantic which then became part of Verizon. The odd thing is that I started out with my first cellphone from ATT wireless back in '94. I switched to Verizon wireless a few years ago to be part of my folks' family plan which is really cheap for all of us.

Following the buyouts of phone companies is almost as confusing as following my banks' name changes.

'T' Fun to look at the history of this company.

Recently I wondered how they ever came up with the name cingular.  American Telephone and Telegraph, Ma Bell, is how we oldsters will always think of it as anyway, wireless or not.
