I am happy with this upgrade: 10 gb for $99 is great. Also, I can now get other POP mail in my .Mac webmail inbox! This means just checking one account!

There's been some discussion about the fact that the increased space will also create a much larger .dmg file on your drive ( if you have syncing enabled ). Right now, the only thing I sync is my 1Password data. I managed to get the space for data down to 128MB by selecting the preponderance for Mail, even though I don't get much mail from the .Mac account and it gets deleted just about daily. You can easily adjust how much is in each category by logging in to your account at <your account settings -> Storage Settings button>. I suspect that you can only make the amount as small as the next largest setting available in the drop down list. In other words, the settings offered are not infinite and it won't let you reduce it below what you already have in use. That's just my thinking, not validated by anything/anyone.

Is ".mac" an annual purchase, monthly, or what?

Besides a .mac e-mail address, what do you get?

I'm sure we bought that for at least one of the college-bound iBooks, but I think it expired.

email, online storage (now 10 GB), Synching all of your macs, backup, web gallery iPhoto integration, online remote access to all your Safari bookmarks, address book, mail etc... and a few other things.  Yearly $99.00 fee.  I use all of these features regularly.

[1][4] I guess I could use those. Already have e-mail, and backup software for OS9.
[2][5] Not into e-photos (yet) or ipods (yet) or videos. Probably wouldn't need those.
[3] I don't know what that requires... the macs have to be networked? What things are "syncable"?
[6] The rest are all one feature, correct? Kind of like having a web page???
[7] As in different features, or more that fall under [6]?

Just wondering if it would be worth it, like Bob says.

I use the e-mail, backup and iDisk. Part of the price is the simplicity from all the integration and everything in one place, especially for Backup.

Some of the "other things" include software only available ( normally ) to members. One such was a collection of royalty free music music a few years ago, I don't think it's still available, however. I think BackUp was issued this way, also.

The biggest problem is the cost. Most (if not all) of the services are available from other places but nowhere can you get all of them at once nor in as easy to use system. The disk space has been upgraded to 10GB (20GB for the Family Plan) but that really won't allow a complete backup of most user's drives. You'll still need to be 'picky' about what you "sync". I may be a little less conservative, now! But if you let the System create a local copy of your iDisk, you may want to think, again, about what you put on that space. The more of that 10GB you use, the larger the DMG you'll end up with on the local drive. I don't keep a local copy, seems retridundant to me since I'm connected 24/7. dntknw.gif

I can't say that I can justify the $99 but, so far, I've been able to live withwout a couple of tanksfull of gas a year. laugh.gif

One more question....

You still need access, right? Or is .mac your ISP? nono.gif

No its not your ISP it an online service.  You still need to bring your own connectivity.

You still need an ISP. And the higher the speed the better, especially if you use any of the iDisk stuff.

Please note Gregg, I was not able to access my .mac account via OS 9 on dialup. Not until I went to X and cable was it reachable. By then I didn't care and had moved on to other venues.

According to this page it requires Panther:

Ah yes the .mac conundrum, translated it is a personal service from Apple for $100 a year, not to be confused with a commercial domain name server.
You will have space with an ID name but no domain identifier. http ://www.customer/mac.com
rather than http ://www.customer.com so your site is not really in the public domain. If all you want is online storage and a place to demonstrate your life at work & play, .mac is a fair offering now with tools and 10 gb’s, but if you want to be listed with google, yahoo, MSN, and so on to display your company and product it is not the option you want. Most ISP's offer space with each account, Earthlink offers 1GB free and additional space at a premium, for example, but like .mac, on earthlink you get http ://www.customer/earthlink.net

That is no longer really true.  Along with the other additions announced last week for .Mac is the ability to now use your own domain.  You no longer have to use the @mac.com domain, but rather you can use any domain you own.

Thanks. Does that mean it's time?

I'm thinking I have everything that I'd use from what's been listed above through other applications I own. But, when it is time, I'll have to replace them with OSXII compatible programs.
