I have used RAR only RARELY (sorry I couldn't help myself) on MAC's; but it's much known on PC's for large files that you download.  It's just another file format like ZIP that's a little more compressed than ZIP but usually slower to work with.  It's a copyrighted algorithm so programs need to pay Eugene Roshal for the right to use it:

I don't remember what program I used at work to do this on a MAC but it worked okay!

UnRAR is good and there are numerous other freeware / shareware applications to work with RAR archives.
I suggest using  MacPAR deLuxe.

Same "freebie" Stuffit Expander that worked on OS9 seems to do the trick just fine for me when needed for these things... smile.gif
