Title: to see or not to see
Post by: george on December 14, 2007, 08:42:40 AM
Is it possible to be downloading anything and at the same time have the screen completely dark/asleep/blank and still DL?
the reason I ask is that I generally DL whilst asleep and would prefer that the bright screen was not a distraction.
The screen in question is an iMac 24-ins

A 'sleeping' display should not have any effect on a down/upload. Same with disk burning, AFAIK. Sleeping the screen/display is not the same as sleeping the computer/cpu.

But if you'd like another 'solution' you might take a look at <Backdrop>. It is a simple app that will will the screen with any color you'd like (or even an image!). And, if it's the front most app, you won't see anything except the Menu Bar and the Dock (if you don't have it hidden). And with command-tab, you can always bring the download program to the front to watch, no doubt with amazement, as that process runs! wink.gif And this thing is absolutely FREE! clap.gif One of the few downloads at VersionTracker with no negative reviews! thumbup.gif

BTW, I use Speed Download for most downloads and it can use a very, very small window with not much more than a 'barber pole' indication download progress. There's no need to use only your browser for downloading.

Thank you Jim, your first observation was spot on.

Or, you could either sleep on the couch, or move the computer to the bathroom, where it would make a great night light while downloading. tongue.gif

That would only work in a country that allows you to have power sockets (apart from a shaver) in a bathroom..... rolleyes.gif

What?! They don't allow GFI outlets? Those should be used anywhere close to water and always outside. Most hair dryers now come with one built in, of course...eek2.gif

methinks this thread has become slightly tangled and should now be transferred to Community under the heading of "Humour" preferably connected with an "extension cord"

Extension cords can easily become tangled, especially when connected with a thread in a public forum, at least in "certain" countries! tongue.gif
