Print Page - OS 10.4.11 Update

Software update on my iBook continues to offer an upgrade from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11.

Anyone had any trouble with this OS? I know I saw a post or two on this, but I can't find them through the search option, just wondering how many of you are using it or have upgraded to it, and how it's working out.

If you downloaded and installed any modifications to Safari you might want to disable/remove them before upgrading. Safari was a non-starter for me and it took quite a while to figure out what was wrong. Should be an easy topic to search for in the forums.

Been running it for a while - not sure how long - but, touch wood, no problems so far...

Only rarely use Safari (FireFox fan) but, again, haven't noticed anything untoward.

No issues here, Chris. Been running it for some time now.

Only thing I noticed was that the AutoFill feature in Safari works a little differently. No problems, just different. It now works just like the AutoFill feature in Leopard.

No problems here either. (I also use FF.)

As with the others, I too have had no problems. But if you are especially apprehensive, you may care to DL the upgrade, boot in to Safe Boot mode and then install the upgrade from there. That will essentially preclude all nonessential Apple functions as well as third party apps, scripts, haxies, plugins, etc. from loading; and thus their interfering with the installation process.

Only takes a minute, and can't (well, shouldn't) hurt.

Immediately after the install, I suggest you Repair Permissions (and run DiskWarrior if you have it).

After a few days of problem free operation, you may care to again check for (any) updaters that are predicated on 10.4.11.

And oh yeah, before you begin the upgrade, you have at least 1 verified backup???

My main beef has been with the new Safari... I don't care for the truncated auto-fill function; hitting the tab key no longer automatically fills-in every field in an online form. And Taboo is no longer compatible with Safari, so before it was trashed it became impossible to close open Safari windows by clicking the "x" button in the left-hand corner. And now that Taboo is non-functional I have to put up with the annoying "this download has an application" message; I haven't found a fix that works yet.

I noticed that some of my widgets were no longer working correctly... For example, using the "Business" widget to look-up phone numbers was useless because all it did was search endlessly. At first I thought that it was a conflict with the widget and 10.4.1, but I soon realized that it was really a conflict with Amnesty, a program I use that lets me run widgets on the desktop independently of Dashboard, which I abhor. Amnesty has been fixed so that it now plays nicely with 10.4.11 and after installing the latest version I am no longer reaching for the analog phone book... Fortunately, my Lava Lamp widget was not affected by the Amnesty conflict.

I don't use Safari a whole lot (mainly FF) and the only thing I noticed was the "find" feature on a page has been changed. No more pop-up window, now it's a little "bar" that opens up at the top right hand corner of the site window. Kinda cute, but puzzled me at first because I wasn't looking up there for a find window.

Mayo, I didn't know about Amnesty. Must go find this (and the lava lamp!).

I started watering the Chia Pet widget a couple of days ago but nothing was growing, so I gave up on it... But when I started it up just now Lo and Behold! there is green stuff growing all over its back!

The only problem I have had with 10.4.11 (which first appeared with 10.4.10 and persisted with 10.4.11) was the sudden failure of the Superdrive in my G4 iMac. This problem has not been unique to me, as there have been several long threads about it at the iMac Discusssion Forum at Apple Support. Curiously all of these threads have been closed recently by Apple. I reported the Superdrive as a bug to Apple Bug Report. Unlike all previous problems I reported to Apple Bug Report which received some kind of prompt response, I heard nothing back for nearly 2 1/2 months (Nov 1 to Jan 10). I just got an email stating the Apple Engineering would like to investigate this problem further and would I please mail my iMac to Cupertino! As this is my main machine and is working fine other than the SuperDrive, Apple will have to wait awhile. Hopefully, one of the many other sufferers of this Superdrive Failure will send their iMac to Apple.

I got a bad case of glacially slow startups (the bar took 4 minutes to transverse it's length) after updating to 10.4.11 on my office iMAC G5. The problem "went away" when after several times I booted on a DVD and ran verify from the Disk Utility. It didn't find anything wrong so I rebooted off the hard drive again and it's worked fine ever since.

Ron, is this problem only with iMacs? Or are other machines affected as well? I have a Superdrive in this iBook, and I'd just as soon stick with 10.4.10 if any of these machines might be affected. I don't use Safari much, so unless there's a compelling reason to use use the newer version, I might just stick with what works.

We have three Lava Lamps in the house, but one has been retired because it wore out... I recently found out that if you habitually run a Lava Lamp for more than ten straight hours that it isn't a good thing. I guess that I should have read the "Read Me" file earlier...

A nice thing about the I Love Lamp (other than the fact that it can run perpetually without a hitch...) is that one can change the shape and colors of the lamp and lava to match the current desktop decor.

All the complaints about Superdrive failure that I have seen relate just to iMacs.
