In OSX, the position of a finder window seems to be related to the position of the window it was opened from (the "enclosing" window). I have it set to open a new window when I double click on a folder (unless I'm holding down the Option key, of course). I suppose it lost this ability because you can also open a folder in the same window you're viewing it in in it's icon form.
Another change seems to be that I've lost the "keep arranged" functionality of OS9 finder windows. If I resize the window after selecting "Arrange by..." such that I'm moving an edge over an icon, that icon stays put. In OS9, (8 and 7 as well) resizing a window in "keep arranged" mode resulted in creating fewer (or more) icons in a row (and eventually a column as well). Leo doesn't do that for me. Maybe there's a setting I don't have active? (But I've already covered this topic in my "Dummies" book!)

2. Select whatever you want in the sidebar, I have mine set with "Applications" highlighted.
3. Size the window as desired and posistion it where you want it..
4. Double-click the little "||" icon in the very bottom of the column seperator to the right of the list of applications.
5. Close the window. (command-w)
6. Tell Finder to open another window. (command-n)
7. If it is exactly like you had it, you're set to go. If it is different, the same selected item in the sidebar should still be highlighted. Now go back to step four.
Now, if you don't like Column View, you may be out of luck! Just another reason I use them. I can see exactly where I am in a top level directories inner divisions and can back up with either the scroll bar or the right arrow. If I need to move a file to another directory, I just hit command-n and get another Finder window and navigate to the appropriate directory than drag the item in the original window into the correct place in the new one. Command-w and the new one is out of the way.
Next?
One thing you'll also notice, opening new windows will usually place the new one slightly to the right and down enough to see its title bar. You'd need to open dozens of Finder windows before they started covering each other completely.
Again, I have no idea how to make List and Icon view windows always stay in the same place or the same size.

Thanks, I hadn't noticed that yet. I'm glad it's only an option to apply it to all windows. There are some I arrange by the month, in calendar order.

Command-N to check that it "took".
But, as I said, it only works in Column View. And that view is always alphabetical. If you want stuff in other orders, create some folders for them. A folder name such as "01-2008 Get Rich Plan(s)" will always be at the top of the list in whatever column it appears in. Of course, you can also include days of the month, time, etc. The main thing is to keep the leading zero for any numbers. It's just been a way I've become accustomed to working, different folk like different ways, we can't all be as smart (aleck) as me!
Column view works best with a wide screen, List View probably works better with narrower screens. Icon View is fine if you have only a small number of items, IMHO. Cover Flow is probably a good mix with both List (for sorting) and Icon (visual) displays. It appears, however, that the visual portion of the window has a minimum size. So that would require a larger window to see as much of the list, as in the same sized window, in List View. But 'six of one and a half dozen of the other' is often sufficient!
Since that's only been available in Leopard, many people here won't have much experience with it. How 'bout you trying that view for a while and reporting any pros or cons?

Actually, in Leopard, there is no checkbox for Keep Arranged in the View Options dialog box. I guess that's why I hadn't noticed it. There is an Arrange By roll down box (up and down arrow next to the words).There is also an Arrange By popup in the contextual menu(CM) which somehow can be changed to Keep Arranged By. I'm not sure how I did that, but one window I just opened had "Keep" and another didn't. However, in Leopard there is indeed the option to arrange by other criteria than just the file name when in column view. In order to get the "Keep Arranged by" option to appear, I had to first select (in the View options window) "Arrange by" - and pick something and then when I went to the View menu, the "Keep Arranged by" option appears. This only worked in Icon View, BTW.

So for all intents and purposes, "Arrange By" in the View Options Window is really "Keep Arranged"...
