The comments offer some interesting perspectives...

All I can say is that my Seagate 7200.10 drive is definitely noisier than an older Western Digital I have in a companion enclosure.

Scary when the ignorance of Seagate's customer support is indicated in this email response to an unhappy Mac user:

"Unfortunately in order to apply the firmware update on this drive you would need to find a PC to install this drive on and apply the firmware. Once this is done you should be able to take the drive to your MAC and run the drive as normal. We do not have a firmware update procedure for MACs."

MAC=Media Access Control

Unbelievably arrogant on Seagate's part, especially considering the number of Mac users who have Seagate drives installed. I've been thinking twice about that company lately - a lot of reports at NewEgg of drives arriving DOA or dying after a very short time. Seems quality control ain't quite what it used to be.

I'm assuming that those with Intel Macs will be able to use the disk image found here: http://support.seagate.com/ad14disty/AD14-AllMoose.zip - burn it to a CD and then boot from that.

Wonder what the techs response would be if you asked if you could use their updater on a Mac running XP or Vista? Or tell him that even a windows only PC has a "MAC" (or two).

But maybe this tells you something about why Seagate isn't finding the defects. (read the last couple paragraphs)

I'm reading this thread for the first time but I'm already wondering if the reason my images (mentioned in the thread about disappearing firewire drives in 10.5.1) aren't copying very fast might be this disabled cache on the Seagate drive (it is a Seagate drive).  Thanks for bringing this up!
