So, nothing we can do about it other than to reload the page - eventually it does come back up, in my experience. Let's hope they get it fixed soon.

The team has certainly gone further than I ever thought they would...A few times last week TS just presents a spinning wheel until I can't stand it any longer. Then, I close the tab and try again and it pops up like nothing's wrong!
I haven't reported it because I've seen he same response from some other sites, none of which are hosted by ASO, AFAIK. I just wrote it off to the clogging of the pipes...

No, George, you aren't alone. That is something you will get if the server is overloaded and can't access the database. Very early this AM I noticed our server was in the red and consequently it was hit and miss as to whether you got to TS or not and if you did how fast things acted.
If anyone who encounters problems would please keep a record of when and for how long and then post here when you do get back to the forum. It will help in our discussions with ASO. We may need to move to another server and more evidence of these glitches will help us decide what to do.

Yesterday I had to repair the database at one point where one part had crashed. This was around 5 AM so probably no one noticed that TS was unreachable. Thing is, if this happens when Paddy or I aren't around TS could be offline for some time.
Once we get some more info we may contact ASO about possibly moving to another server but we're not sure that will be much better. Am looking into ways to trim our database which will make things a bit faster for us anyway.

I just can't positively confirm that it's the servers. Sometimes TS pops right up. Sometimes the spinning wheel keeps on turnin'. Sometimes a post is uploaded iummediately, sometimes I just disconnect and come back later to find it actually did get posted.
Like just now. The "Uploading post" graphic would never stop, could not access any page that was not already "tabbed." Just don't visit enough sites to know if it's Comcast or ASO.
But, so far, TS is the only site giving me these problems. Just not consistently.

I've just pulled up 4 threads that show me as the last poster but also as 'unread' by me. Don't think is the correct display unless someone else is logging in as me.
Anyway, if the servers have been down for any reason, can I assume this is a normal indication of that?

The problem of posts not being properly checked as read I believe is a small bug in our version of the forum software that crops up now and then. There is an upgrade which we will apply one of these days when we feel adventurous.

OTOH, I picked up two FireWire webcams for 50 bucks last week! But they don't mount on a monitor (or a laptop screen) too well. Finding a place on my wife's desktop may be the biggest problem...maybe I can hang it from the ceiling...at least until she see an image of herself!
As for the original topic of this thread, once again, I just stopped FF from spinning its little pizza and tried again a few seconds later and the connection was almost instantaneous.

It would be helpful if you can demonstrate a history and reasons why.
I have requested this from ASO in the past and the results are noticeable.
(A) Ana Lucia is an older server by now and the older ones seem to get the new smaller accounts as time goes on. (guessing) These new additions are watched for over-activity but, there is a time-laps or moments of surge in activity that can only be detected after the fact.
When I set up this account I requested (from Tim) that it be placed on the latest addition, making it known to him the problems we had experienced in our past. Ana Lucia's hardware had just been upgraded at the time so we received the best performance available.

In some digging we found that AnaLucia has "476 sites hosted on this server". That may be part of the reason for our outages. Seems a bit much for one server.
"NS1.ASMALLORANGE.COM has 26,434 domains". There are 81 servers (not all active at any one time) so the average would be about 326 sites per server. Of course all sites aren't the same size or have the same bandwidth demands so that kind of statistic can be misleading.
Nonetheless we are watching and may ask for a move at some point.

However, I've been told by ASO that the unusual bandwidth I noticed in the database early in May was most likely a Denial of Service attack. It was instigated by a Russian site which I've since put on the deny list in our htaccess file so they won't be able to do it again. Why anyone would pick us is beyond me.
Probably just random troublemaking.

Kris if you can get an inside angle on a hardware update (aso forums) it is usually a good indication that the New Server will be larger and faster than the last one. I was reading their site at the time when I discovered that a New Server was coming and so I requested that the troubled Domain be transferred to that new server. At a later date I used that link (paddy referred too)and the forum to request a space for TS, Ana Lucia was just upgraded at the time. ASO is still my favorite Host Company and I deal with a few. When the opportunity presents itself I try to convince folks to move their domains there. They have issues like everyone else but they seem to handle them pleasantly and promptly which isn't found with all other host.

Don't forget - we get Wednesday before you do, though I'm not sure how relevant that is!
Little bit of trouble getting in here about 45 mins ago (17.45 UK), ("Techsurvivors taking too long to respond"), but second attempt, through Safari, worked OK. Just tried FF again and went straight in. All other sites I visit seem to be OK, though they are UK.
Hopefully, things will settle down again now.

Attempted to get to .Mac/Mobileme and got the same screen for a short period of time. The site did finally show up, though.
So, not sure if it was ASO or a over-crowded connection at the store.
A short time later, I was able to access TS from the same phone.
An aside...
The store was still requiring folks to line up, get a 'ticket' and wait for a clerk to assist them in purchasing the 3G. And there were still quite a few customers getting them!
