) lots of files. Next I transferred even more stuff to the external drive. Lastly, a through checking on the directory and permissions.I purchased a generic Leopard Install DVD and started it up. Installation went very smoothly and much quicker than I expected. The DVD was already at 10.5.1 so there was not too much to update on the OS. Also did the QuickTime, Security, Java, iTunes, etc. updates. Ran Monolingual to remove dozens of un-needed Languages, remove 95% of the printer PPDs and checked permissions one more time.
Restarting worked fine each time and I left the machine alone for a couple of hours to let Time Machine get started on the first back up!
Next, the usual prefs setups, printer installing, etc. Everything seemed to be working fine. I decided to try out some of the new stuff I couldn't use with her on Tiger, namely, Screen Sharing. Actually tried it from her side first. Discouragingly, all I got was a black screen from my iMac! A search at Apple's Forums eventually led me to a post saying the 'space ship' Airport router was not compatible with Screen Sharing. Not the sort of info I wanted to see/hear!
However, further searching seemed to indicate the settings could be made in a few more places and eventually, I was able to see and use her iBook from mine! 
The most important info I read about was that Back to My Mac should be enabled! But she doesn't have a .Mac account! No problem, just enter the name and password you have there, even on the non-.Mac computer!
Some other things I think I learned:
1. Turn the Apple Firewall OFF, the one in the router should be better, anyway.
2. Do not specify a list of users in the "Allow access for:" section of the Sharing Pref Panel. Making sure that "Screen Sharing" is, of course, selected in the "Service" list.
3. Don't believe everything you read on screen! My screen says others can 'access my computer(screen) at vnc://10.0.1.5/ or browse for "Jim Chaffin's iMac". Actually, they must use my short name: "jimchaffin!"
4. Screen Sharing will automatically connect the two computers. No need to first "log in" and then start up Screen Sharing.
5. When viewing my screen on hers, the cursor is almost invisible!

Next, she intended to print something and the 'collapsed' Print dialog presented itself! Showed her the little arrow thingy and she calmed down considerably.
Haven't told her yet that she is now using Leopard. We'll see how long she can endure that new 'features' she doesn't even know she has!
Well, I just told her we are both using he same OS. I turned on Screen Sharing and she almost immediately noticed two of us had control of her cursor! "What are you doing over there?!" I'd been found out! And rather quickly, I'm proud to say!
So far, she doesn't seem perturbed by my 'powers of control' nor have I shown her how to access MY screen!

I just know that if I tried that with SWMBO's laptop, I can unconditionally guarantee that you would need to make room out near the 'ceement pond' for a new 'long term' boarder.

One of the often forgotten consequences of installing a new OS is that the default "Save", "Open" and "Print" dialogs are minimized. Probably not what was in use before the upgrade. That's all that caused the 'grief' this time.
Now that the latest 'crisis' has been averted, she is wanting to know why some emails from some people end up being duplicated.
I assume it is some setting on their PCs. She gathers email from only one account and it has no aliases. I suggested that she just check them both and delete one or both. No telling how long this has been happening, she is just extra, extra sensitive to 'problems' or changes right now! I've turned the AC down a bit hoping that may help her keep her 'cool!' However, if you don't hear from me at least every 24 hours, please call the Collierville Police...You can't be too safe!

She's having trouble with Eudora 'unexpectedly quitting.' I've imported her Eudora Mailboxes into Mail.app. That took a few hours! Now they all reside in Mail. But they are below the "Inbox, Junk, Sent, etc." group. Is there no way to have them up there in the top list? I did manage to move everything from the Eudora "In" Mailbox to Mail's "Inbox." But it appears she/I may be stuck with "the Apple Way" again.
And please point me to info that says what is displayed in the pane below a mailbox list is not displaying the message as it would when the message is double-clicked! In other words, is it safe to view a message in the pane without worrying about calls to the server for graphics, etc. It appeared that at least one message indicated where an image would be with the generic graphic icon.
BTW, she has not yet seen that she now has Mail available. I may try to get her to take a sedative or two before introducing this latest change! I thought it might be easier than trying to figure out what was causing Eudora to crash, we'll see...
BTW #2: Screen sharing is GREAT! I can control everything on her iBook and even enter text or use her apps without even leaving my seat! Even the screen saver shows up in the window showing her screen!

Why do you think there is a "Download Images" button on the message display? 
Viewing in POPmonitor also reveals that Mail does not actually download the message until one double-clicks it. So, viewing a message in the display pane is similar to using POPmonitor.
Also worked out how to change the text size in a message. Same as Eudora, I think, click anywhere in the message and use command & "+" or "-".

Next, she realized that Mail didn't have any of her quite large Address Book in it. Even though I had imported her email, there didn't seem to be a way to import that. Ended up exporting from Eudora to a .cvs file, checked it with BBEdit and imported it into Address Book.app. I'm assuming
that Mail will naturally be able to use what's in Address Book? Sure hope so, I'll be doing that tomorrow while she is away for the day.

I also spent a lot of time importing her Eudora Addressbook into Address Book.app. Of course, she (and I) entered info in such a way as to have the last name first in the "Names" list. Makes it easier to human scan the list that is alphabetical. Mail sorts by last name but it displays the name in the 'normal' fashion: First Last. I think some tedious editing can fix this but I'm running short of "teedies"!
Importing her messages when smoothly but they then all appeared as "Unread." Some mailboxes had over 10,000 messages! Several had more than 4,000! Making rules has been mastered but running the ever larger number on huge mailboxes takes quite some time without much feedback that anything is happening. At first, even I was confused into thinking the rules weren't working.
I think she likes the speed of the searches and keeping things in 'normally' one window helps on the small screen of the iBook.
Don't think she understands that messages are not actually downloaded until opened in its own window. At least, that's what I think is happening, is this correct?
We also had some problems in that the Import seemed not to include attachments. Fortunately, they were still in the Eudora Attachments folder. I can also open them in Eudora and send then to her so they will then include the attachments. For these and other reasons, it may be a long time before we reclaim the space used my (Eudora) Email.
She is not 'mellowing' visibly yet. However, she asked me to join her for lunch in the den.

And here are instructions for how to Use netscape 7 to export the Eudora address book to Mail; I haven't tried it myself...
TidBITS recently ran an article about moving from Eudora to Mail; it may provide some useful info.
In my case Eudora 6.2.4 works just fine with 10.5.X... But I am keeping a close eye on the beta Eudora clone Odysseus since Mail just doesn't cut it as a Eudora replacement for me...

The main problem now is cleaning up the massive list of addresses in Address Book, duplicates, missing info, creating new 'nicknames,' etc. I left her alone with the machine tonight for about two hours and returned to find her still in one piece! I think she is actually learning where stuff is on her machine and how much all apps have a lot of the same commands. She's used Macs for years but never seemed to retain the basics...maybe now that she is forced to see how things are done she will remember better. She is still reluctant to trying anything without knowing exactly what will happen. Not a bad habit but she takes it to the extreme by not even checking what's available in the menus or the preferences. Have a friend at church who is even worse, he has never used a computer, I don't think, until I brought the mini to the sound booth.
I'm still trying to see when she has any frustration and being extra patient to help her find the answers. Screen Sharing is really handy in those situations. I can either move the cursor myself or coach her by talking about things in her screen without having to look over her shoulder. She feels less like she's being told what to do and is actually doing 98% of the mousing, clicking and typing. I'm hoping that will re-enforce things enough that she will become much more comfortable with her Mac.

My wife mysteriously blames stuff like that on some Chinese guy... U No Hu. I've never met him, and can't figure out how he does stuff.

And there are many fewer PBS stations than commercial ones, anyway. There are actually several networks that are purely selling products 24 hours a day! Sort of a video Ebay! :eek! I think we have three diferent networks/stations in this area! Talk about 'shop till you drop!'
