Title: What are you listening to?
Post by: gunug on June 12, 2008, 09:19:06 AM
I'm listening to Kelley Hunt right now (her self-named CD)!  She's a Lawrence resident and she has sung at family weddings so I'm kind of fond of her warm blues!  I also just heard about Roger McGuinn's website with his versions of old folk music available (one posted each month):

http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/folkden-wp/

I guess he's been doing this every month since 1995 and compiled 100 of the songs onto a 4 CD set called the Folk Den Project:

I am totally addicted to the soundtrack from the film "Grizzly Man" by Richard Thompson.(Soundtrack Review)  Gosh it is good and so easy to have on in the background while I work.

Also, the radio version of BBC's Dad's Army which is brilliantly funny and lovely.Webpage Info

Anything by Richard Thompson is a work of genius, but that was a very good soundtrack. If you can get your hands on the DVD of the movie, there's a bonus feature on the disk about the making of the soundtrack.

Frances, dBoh - Thanks for bringing up Richard Thompson; I leaned over and put his Action Packed compilation on my iTunes!  I've appreciated his guitar-work ever since Fairport Convention days!

His son, Teddy, came up to Shetland last month and was very good.  I really enjoyed his concert.  Obviously, had he brought his dear old dad, I would have enjoyed it alot more!!!!  But I can recommend Teddy.

Also, the song "Persuasion" has to be my all time most favouritest song in the whole world!

Up late (early) and I put on a Townes Van Zandt Live Set from a dinky Houston club called the "Old Quarter" in the year I graduated from high school (1973).  Bad acoustics but a great live set!  TVZ never got the props he deserved as a singer or a songwriter but he sure turned out some great and avocative stuff!

If you remember The Stranglers (Golden Brown, No More Heroes, Peaches), former lead singer Hugh Cornwell has a new album out called Hooverdam which you can download free from http://www.hooverdamdownload.com/

I've just listened to a couple of tracks, but liked what I've heard so far.

Thanks Highmac, as the price is right I'll download and have a listen!  I forgot to mention a neat story about "Sneaky Pete" Kleinow, the great pedal steel guitar player and animator:

Some people are born with great talents!  I ought to name my mid-range hearing loss in my right ear after him!

As you know, I love the soundtrack from Grizzly Man.  Does anyone know of similar stuff - not the weird bits - the tuneful guitar pickings type?

I find it easy to listen to and would like to broaden my horizons.

Not exactly the same but the following spring to mind

1) Bert Jansch (with and without John Renbourn)
2) Ry Cooder
3) Nick Drake
4) Early John Martyn

I've also been listening a lot to my favourite album of the year so far The Last Shadow Puppets.  Lots of nice stuff on the website for their album The Age of the Understatement.

Absolutely incredible record! You can hear the crickets chirping on the quiet passages.

Townes was an amazing songwriter, no doubt about it! I sing a couple of his tunes and I'm always hoping that I'm doing them justice.

Some real treasures in this thread. Don't know how I missed the Richard Thompson Grizzly Man album - I'm a big fan and own pretty much everything he's ever done. (Along with Linda's solo stuff and now 2 of Teddy's CDs as well) The Roger McGuinn site will keep me busy for a while - lots to listen to and add to the iTunes library there! His Cardiff Rose album is an old favorite. His version of Shenandoah is gorgeous - it's on the Folk Den site.

Hugh Cornwall/The Stranglers are also long-time faves. (even my 16 year old likes them!) Years ago I went to see the Stranglers at the Masonic Temple in Toronto and as we were good friends with the promoters - The Garys - we got to go backstage after as well. We got talking to Hugh and mentioned that we were going to NYC the following week and hoped to catch the Stranglers show there as well. He said "Really? Well, I'll put you on the guest list then!" and proceeded to scribble our names down on a scrap of paper and stuff it in his pocket. We thought to ourselves "right, well, that's the end of that..." but were astonished to discover on arriving in NYC and calling the club that we were indeed on the guest list. Nice guy. Got invited to the party after too, but the concert didn't end until 3 a.m., we were wiped out after jumping up and down all evening and ended up just going back to our friends' apt. in Queens. NYC subways at 3:30 AM on a week night are a bit of an adventure too...

I think I've mentioned this before here, but a really interesting site for live recordings of bands - mostly from the 60s, 70s and 80s AND new indie bands is http://www.wolfgangsvault.com They also have interviews with various musicians. There are 1477 concerts on there now and 506 of them are available for download (some free, some about the same cost as an album at the iTunes store - but you can ALWAYS listen to the entire thing for free online)

Thanks for the Wolfgang's Vault link - browsing around I found a 1988 article by Paul Williams about rock videos; on Page 2 - and remember this was written in 1988!

Hi Sandy,

Don't know exactly which "Fish Fry" gunug is referring to, but it's a common custom in quite a few places in our society. Done a little differently in certain parts of the country, but it has been going on for years and years.

Lot's of folks do it on Friday nights, and it's basically a social get-together over fried fish and french-fried potatoes and beer! It has been a tradition in our Southern region for many years, catch a bunch of fish, get some folks together, get a band, or some music playing on the old stereo, and fry up all the fish you got!

And the music that gunug is referring to is definitely appropriate for such a gathering!

And I'm sure John will be back to post his version!

A now deceased friend of mine who was an anatomy professor used to have a blues/Southern Jazz show on a college radio station (1970's/80's) that I model what I like after for my fish fry.  He actually used to have these parties that were like that although they didn't have that much live music!  There is also a guy named Chuck Haddock (Haddix) who has friday and saturday night fish fry shows on KCUR at the University of Missouri KC!  This is the link to the KCUR show which I think is streamable from 8pm to Midnight on Friday and Saturday nights Central Standard Time:

I collect music and string it together and listen and see if I can duplicate the elusive qualities my friends stuff or even Chuck's stuff!

Kind of in keeping with the "Fish Fry" stuff I have been listening to Stéphane Grappelli, and Django Reinhardt who play very elegant and nice Jazz on the violin and the guitar respectively!  Mostly what I'm listening to is pre-WWII stuff as that was the period of the most innovation!  This stuff was sometimes called "gypsy jazz" and Reinhardt was actually a gypsy from Belgium!

Tchaikovsky - The Seasons - beautiful music especially Autumn Song.  I don't know why this is not played more.  I only went to find it when I heard it as an accompaniment to a Russian animation film by Ivanov-Vano.  (Seasons Film).  Now I have just found that the piano music is available as an piano exam piece so I am off to find that as I would love to be able to play it!

BTW, if you like this film, you would also like Hedgehog in the Fog - perfect little film (Hedgehog in the Fog)

I saw it when it was on before.  Brilliant. Jacqui McShee you can understand, they were in Pentangle together.  But Johnny Marr and Bernard Butler was a surprise for me.  I really like both of them but they are not normally names you would asscociate with Bert Jansch.  Well worth recording though.

I've recently 'rediscovered' the East Village Opera Company: a full Rock ensemble plus a small string section fronted by excellent male and female vocalists, playing actual opera music arranged as rock tunes [reminiscent of the Who, Queen, and ELO at various moments].

For me, the best part is that the singers use no Bel Canto styling at all, but sing 'full-voice' instead.  [IMO, the typical Bel Canto/'Head Voice' almost universally employed by Opera singers is an esthetically ugly sound, even more so when compared with the stunning range of aurally beautiful sounds produced by the best singers of Rock, Pop, and 'Folk' music]

The band's arrangements are brilliantly dynamic and innovatively rhythmic [IMO, these two qualities are inherent and abundant in a skillful Rock band and make Rock's tonalities particularly well-suited to expressing typical operatic musical compositions*]

Anywho, check these guys out!  EVOC site home page

I highly recommend watching/hearing the La Donna e Mobile video [click on 'Video' link on the homepage, and it's the 1st of three presented - FYI, I was never able to get this to work in Firefox, but Safari played it fine].

* I hope I got this point across, but after working and re-working this sentence for the past quarter hour, I am gonna concede that it's adequate, even though I still have the feeling that I could have expressed it more clearly...

Ry Cooder interview never materialised - guess he couldn't make it. Instead we got chat and live set from Aussie folk-rock band The Waifs, who I'd never heard of, but apparently they impressed Bob Dylan, who had them as support on his Down-Under tour. And Steve Earle wanted to produce them, according to Johnnie Walker, but they said they'd never heard that story smile.gif

They are at present touring the US according to their own site
