Title: Apple Hardware Test
Post by: Gregg on June 15, 2008, 07:07:52 PM
Well, I was going to do a trial run to test my RAM, just for kicks.

AHT is supposed to be on my Leopard installation disc. I didn't find it. dntknw.gif

What's the secret?

I memory serves you put the thing in, restart the system, and hold down the "D" key and not the "C" key to run AHT!  Let me know if my memory is rotten!

John, that's what the article I read instructs owners of a MacBook Air to do. I actually have two OSX Leopard discs, parts 1 and 2, that is. I looked on both of them, but only saw things that seemed related to running an install, so I didn't click around much.

Hmmm, so it applies to any Intel chip inside Mac, not just for Air heads! (such as the person who wrote and/or edited the article in MacWorld) wink.gif

And, later on in the same article, it states that a copy of Apple's Disk Utility is also on the OS X Install disc. I don't see that in the finder window of either disc when I put them in the drive. For that matter, I don't see it on the discs before I put them in the drive.... (ok, Jim?)

So how are you supposed to use this phantom copy of Disk Utility "in dire circumstances" to "perform basic disk repairs"???

You have to go through the initial steps as if installing from the DVD. Start up from the DVD, pick your language etc., then when the menu appears in the top bar click on Installer->Open Disk Utility. I know...a bit counterintuitive!

I'm a little confused (again?!). I don't think I installed AHT when I upgraded to Leopard, mainly because I already have TTPro, of which AHT is a piece. But I'm not aware that one could install any Apple OS without also installing Disk Utility. How else would general users repair Permissions? dntknw.gif Sure there are many third-party apps that can run the scripts but if the user is able to delete or not install DU, they would already know to use another app, anyway. It has just never occurred to me not to install DU. blush-anim-cl.gif

I think the point of having ADU on the installation disc is so that you have a fall back if you can't boot from your hard drive. AHT was also not installed on my Leopard-from-The-Store Mac Mini. Dunno why not.

I have TTP 4.6.1 and I don't see any sort of RAM test. What version do you have?

Sure, DU is on the install disk(s) exactly for what you mentioned, it's the 'ability' and 'intelligence' of not installing it on the boot volume that I'm questioning.

I also have that version. The main memory test is in Tests->Hardware->Main Memory. Fourth item down in the list of Hardware tests.

Uh, ok. Main Memory = RAM
They oughta stop chaning the lingo. wacko.gif

Not sure what you thought implied not installing DU on the HD in this thread. huh.gif

My bad, I assumed you meant you didn't find DU on your HD with "either discs before" you put them in the drive. In other words, when looking at your HD. I now see that it was a 'bit 'o humor' that messed up my hair as it flew over my head! blush-anim-cl.gif I'm not a speed reader but I do jump to conclusions fairly quickly! laugh.gif
