Title: Dropped a dry martini on keyboard - sort of MENDED!
Post by: Frances144 on July 28, 2008, 04:42:47 PM
Yes, I know "don't have liquid or food near a puter", but I did and spilled my dry martini (ice, lemon and olive - stirred not shaken) on my iMac keyboard.

It worked for a while and then suddenly caps lock without being asked and then denied log in password.  So I started it back up with the Leopard cd and can't change the password (I am sure I remember it, but just in case) as it won't acknowledge the old one.  Just shakes its little box at me.

So, last resort, I have unplugged the keyboard and bunged it in a cold shower to wake it up - a huge pile of gunk fell out, which is encouraging and maybe the remnant of my dry martini (what a waste!).

Drip-drying on the kitchen table for the night in a very warm kitchen. Any other thoughts?  How do you take it to bits - it is a modern clear plastic and white keys type of keyboard.

Bum!

Oops.

Take apart here:

My kids spilled tea in one of ours - never could get it working again so just gave up and bought a new one. The trouble is, any liquid can cause corrosion and shorting of the circuits. Once that happens, there is nothing much you can do.

The new aluminum keyboards are £29 at the Apple store...

Frances, somehow the phrase "hair of the dog" or was it three dogs comes to mind.

At least it was just the keyboard and not the Mac...

Liquids around keyboards: acceptable. I have to be able to rehydrate even while working at the computer.
Liquids around a portable Mac/desktop Mac: unacceptable.  Oh Man, the sob-stories I have read on myriad forums!

What is it about martinis anyway??? They taste like lighter fluid to me... My parents each had two martinis every night after work so I had plenty of opportunities to sneak a sip.  I only did it once or twice, confirming in my kid brain that adults are out of their freakin' minds. As an adult I've tried what I have been told are Excellent Martinis and I'm stuck with my first impression... I suppose it is one of those "acquired adult tastes" like coffee and golf.

I prefer good beer, champagne and really good single malt Scotch, not that I'm much of a drinker.  I gave up drinking for the effect by the time I was 18...   devilishgrin.gif

It might work, you never know.

Don't be surprised if some of the words you type are slurred. :sauced: wink2.gif

If it was truly a "dry" martini, you should be able to blow or vacuum it off.  toothgrin.gif

When I got to the bottom of this thread I found out that Texas Mac Man had beaten me to it!  I've taken USB keyboards apart and have gotten ports to work and simple stuck keys unstuck but I don't think I'd have much luck with the one that comes with the new iMAC's and while I suspect simple alcohol wouldn't be much of a problem all of the flavorings, sugars, and acids would be!

I put mine in the dishwasher on low, no soap, let it dry and presto!!

I prefer a Mojito or a Caipirinha in the summer, I think my old keyboard did too! wink.gif

I just received a gift bottle of American Spirits, 15 year old wild turkey. I'm not big on bourbon so it may get a few years older before it finds its final resting place. smile.gif

All mended - as good as new, I think.

Can anyone recommend the ultimate Mac tool kit?  I think we need an industrial one!!!

That dfoesn't seem to be such a problem. Your dfriendfs will catch on sooner or later. wink.gif

Seriously, it seems better than I expected, but anything less than 100% doesn't make for happy computing.

Oooh sun is over the yard-arm - off to make a martini.  Lots of olives tonight, I think!  Luckily I have an iBook for the serious typing.  The iMac is for the photography so you don't really need a keyboard for that!

Is the aforementioned "df" problem before drinking martini or after drinking martini!  What did you do the first time?  If it wasn't too tedious do it again!

Yes, when the sun is over the yardarm, then go for it.
Actually a martini has no sugar, well, not enough to be sticky, so that will not be a problem.  The ethanol should evaporate very well.
So drying the keyboard should work.

My brother spilled a cup of tea with sugar and milk on it on his keyboard and put it thru the dishwasher and its fine!

And when I was a child, I spilled a glass of ginger ale on our lovely piano keyboard, and my father who never got mad at me and my brothers(not very often), used the opportunity to show me how to take an antique piano entirely apart and clean it.
I never forgot that lesson, as I loved it, and to this day, I can tune a piano and have the tools to do it, just given them to our daughter who took a class in tuning from an old man who had incredible knowledge of old pianos.  The class included repair too.

I dont allow any drinks or food in my computer room at all, and we dont allow any smoking at all inside.  Our wood stove is the only critter allowed to emit any smoke inside our house.  Gin and Tonics anywhere else, or whatever our guests want to drink, but not in here.

I had already purchased a new keyboard when I heard that the dishwasher would work. I dumped coffee with cream and sugar onto it. I still have the Apple keyboard today and it's working just fine on my G3. wink.gif

If I could try one without buying it... maybe. smile.gif

I'm just hoping I can still use this keyboard with future Macs.  And I am using a Microsoft (Yep) 5 button mouse which I do like. yes.gif

Looks nice but...

not enough buttons

I use both hands (left more than right) so my present mouse is ambidextrous.
