Title: New iMac
Post by: iGuy on July 30, 2008, 06:46:48 PM
I just purchased a new 20" iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.  I connected external speakers that I was using with my old iMac.  Since using them with the new computer they have be crackling. For example: something in the house shuts of like the central air.  When that happens the speakers pop.  I don't remember having this problem before.

Any ideas?

A really off the wall idea...

Is the power to your new iMac (Congratulations!) "conditioned" through a UPS or any other type of 'filtering' system?

If not, could it be that the circuitry in the new iMac is more susceptible to  'ebb and flow' of the power in your house and may be passing this on to the speakers.

Just a S.W.A.G. on my part..

Best of luck in finding a solution.

There were some issues with this when 10.4 came out, and apparently it hasn't gone away:

Basically, the Mac puts the audio to sleep when it's been quiet for a bit...

The little app that was mentioned in the Apple thread is here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13709

The only other thing I can think of is doing what I do - run the Mac through a mini stereo. (Speakers are attached to the receiver, not the Mac)
