Title: blinded by the light?
Post by: Gregg on July 31, 2008, 09:21:57 PM
They never go out

Good reason not to have the computer set up in your bedroom!

In our house, it's the dang glowing smoke detectors. And they flicker!

We also have the answering machine/phone on a night stand next to the bed. It's amazing how much light that little LED number can give off when it's totally dark. We have black-out shades, so very little light gets in from the street lights, etc.

My eMac and my G4 Powermac are both in my bedroom and don't bother me in the least a night; I shut them off!  Oh, occasionally I leave the iTunes on a streaming radio station, set the thing to shut down in a hour or so and then set the screensaver going!

Or set a shutdown time in "Energy Saver." Or run a program like <Folding@home> (with the screen set to go black after a few minutes) and help some research labs. <my stats> <TeamOSX stats> #6! clap.gif salute.gif

The screen can go black all you want, but most monitors have a tiny light that stays on whenever they're powered up. Is that true of the iMac as well?

My Mac Mini has a tiny white light that stays on, my HP monitor has a green one. My DSL router has 4 lights that stay on all the time, one that blinks, and a fifth one that I think will come on when my son connects with his iBook. My surge protector has 5 orange lights and one red one that stay on all the time, and I have an electrical adapter sitting next to the Mini that has an orange light on constantly. I do not want all these lights shining in the room I'm trying to sleep in! But, all the above are sitting on the rolltop desk. If it was in the bedroom, we could simply lower the tambour at night.

My wife's head blocks most of the light from the clock radio on the nightstand next to her, and the aforementioned answering machine display, next to me, at least faces the ceiling! ...same for the control for the mattress.

Duct tape works great for these kind of light 'leaks!' Covers those automotive 'idiot lights' just fine, also! tongue.gif

My digital clock has an annoying light even on its low setting. I do want to see the time so I put a couple tissues over it to make it translucent.  When I'm sleeping in the day (more often than not) I sometimes place a light scarf over my eyes.  sleep1.gif
