Title: board behavior in Reply mode
Post by: Gregg on August 12, 2008, 07:34:36 AM
I've just noticed something recently, when I've quoted something and am editing. When there are extraneous spaces (lines) between the first [/ ]<--"quote" bracket and the text quoted, I place the cursor to the immediate left of the first character of text and hit the backspace key. Instead of that producing the desired "backing up" action, it deletes the character to the right!

I just tried to replicate the effect, and of course, it worked properly. wallbash.gif
I was trying to make sure I was in fact using the correct key!
I must pay closer attention if it happens again.

Anyway, if I move the cursor up to the blank line above and then use the backspace key, it does what I want. The blank line is removed. dntknw.gif

Sorry for a topic that's so elementary. sherlock.gif

It has me scratching my head. huh.gif

Gregg,

You sure you didn't hit the delete-right key on the keypad to the right of the regular keyboard?

Just a thought.

Well, I don't have an Apple keyboard. The backspace key is a "double-wide" marked with the word and an arrow pointing to the left, and is located to the right of the +/= key in the number row. I'm pretty sure that's the key that has been misbehaving, or the board has been.

The curious thing is that when I click to move the cursor up a line, the same key causes the opposite action.

I don't know that I've ever used the "delete" key, which is the normal size, and is in a grouping between the letters and the number pad grouping. There is not an arrow on that key.

Speaking of keys I've never used before, I was just playing with speaker volume keys. I hadn't even paid any attention to them until now. One has a speaker symbol on it, another has the symbol and a "sound wave" on it, and the third has three "sound waves" and the symbol. When I press them, a see-through volume control image comes up on the display.

The key without the "wave" seems to be a mute key. The other two are volume down and up, respectively.

This is what I love about simple questions. They usually lead to other discoveries, in this case another very simple one, but something new nonetheless. As you know, I'm not an early adopter. I've had this keyboard and mouse since Christmas, but only recently have I begun using the mouse's scroll wheel and the page down key.

That just might be part of the problem...
Still not sure where you are putting the cursor.

Line one
line two
the next line is blank

line 4 of 'real text
Placing my Apple cursor in the blank line and pressing the delete key clears the blank line and moves the bottom (line 4...) one up. Placing the cursor just to the left of the word "line" in the last line and pressing delete does exactly the same thing. dntknw.gif

BTW, this post was done in the "Fast Reply" window and the "IBR2" skin. Have you tried any other skins? Or the alternate editing window that you normally use?

Have only tried the skin that I'm in. Placing cursor to the left of "Line one" when there is a blank line or two above it. Backspace erases the "L". But if I place it to the left of the blank line above, backspace removes that blank line.

In trying to replicate the behavior, I was unable to get a quote with a blank line at the top. Perhaps that is the "key". I need to pay attention to the circumstances in which that occurs.

I don't know if it happens only in FAST REPLY or ADD REPLY, or both.

I know that sometimes in Word, typing erases previously placed text instead of moving it to the right. The solution to that is to hit the "insert" key. I'm not sure what causes that to be necessary. But the behavior I'm describing is not solved with that key. I haven't needed to test it, since moving the cursor works.

The only reason I don't like it, is because that's not supposed to happen.

I don't see "blank lines". If you could get screen caps of the original reply window and then how it looks after you try deleting and so on, it might be easier for us'n to help track down the prob.

Just for fun, what keyboard and mouse do you use?

Well, I couldn't duplicate your problem Gregg but I found a neat feature I didn't know previously.

If you hold the Option key while clicking Delete it removes the whole word that comes before the cursor.  cool.gif

If you mean posting a "picture" of my screen, that's not gonna happen. Never tried it, don't know the steps.

I have a "USB 2.0 keyboard" by Matias.

Yeah, if it happens again, I'll let you know. It's done it quite often recently. I suspect that the solution was to report it here, thereby insuring that I could not make it happen again in order to prevent it.

When I hold the Option key and then press the Delete key, the word to the right of the cursor disappears. I would call that "after" not "before". dntknw.gif

These simple puzzles are interesting, but vexing.

Screen/window/selected area captures are extremely easy. The screen and selected area captures are built into the OS, have been for many, many years. Shift-command-4 should change your cursor to a "plus" sign/target that you place in one corner of what you want to capture. Then click & hold while you drag the cursor to the opposite corner. Release the button and that's it. A 'PictureX.png' file will appear on your Desktop or where ever you specified in your System Prefs. ( X being a number )

You can also download a free app called <SnapNDrag> that gives you many more options.

The point is, describing what is on the screen/window/etc. is sometimes difficult for the questioner and even more difficult for the people attempting to answer a problem. Your example of "before" and "after" shows that language problem. wink.gif As they say, "A picture is worth a ten thousand pixels!" laugh.gif

I'm thinking it's your keyboard.  The word to the LEFT of the cursor is the one that is deleted on my keyboard.  Thinking.gif

Yeah, it just might be the keyboard.

Jim, it's not the capturing I'm totally unfamiliar with, it's the posting of same. I've seen the instructions given to others here. To be honest, I'm simply not interested. But, I haven't used the screen capture capabilities of my two Macs, ever. I did play with it on my first Mac, may it rest in peace. notworthy.gif

Posting an image is even easier than with the old TS software. clap.gif Tell it you want to upload an image and it will show you the standard Navigation dialog where you can tell it where the file/image is on your HD. That's really all there is to it.

There is another way to display an image directly in a post, but the disadvantage is that it can stretch the whole page and force horizontal scrolling. The upload method makes a 'thumbnail' for you (free!) that the viewer can then click on to see full size. smile.gif You're not an "old dog" yet, you can still learn a few 'tricks!' salute.gif

In Reply mode, if I click on the tree icon (insert image) the dialog box asks me for a URL.

Using the regular reply box and not the Fast Reply ... instead of the "tree" icon (insert image), look down below the reply box. On the right hand side you should see:

"Manage Current Attachments"

and below that a blank box with a BROWSE button next to it and next to that an UPLOAD button.

Click the BROWSE button, navigate to your graphic, select it and then click the UPLOAD button.

Go to the "Manage Current Attachments" menu, click and hold and on the right you'll see an icon with a green plus sign. Click that you've now uploaded your attachment to your post.

You can leave it in the midst of your reply, or move it to the beginning or the end or where ever it suits you ... just make sure you grab the "[" at each end along with the info.

Hope this helps. smile.gif

Instead of "BROWSE" I have "Choose File". When I click that, and select a file, it puts the filename in the box next to the button. When I click the "UPLOAD" button, the filename disappears. dntknw.gif

EDIT: As you can see, I did it twice. Nothing appeared in the reply window, but now I see that the Manage Current Attachments also has (2) next to it. I've tried to "manage" them without apparent success, so let's see what happens...

EDIT #2: Ok, it helps to follow ALL of the instructions! I should have removed the second one now, and moved the image to the top of the post. (They were at the bottom.)

Congratulations! clap.gif I gnu u cud dew it! laugh.gif

BTW, the skin I use also has a tiny 'picture' button in the Fast Reply window. That's what you use to "Insert an image." I've never tried it but it, apparently expects you to already have an image uploaded to some private web space you have. I suppose the only way to get a file off your HD is to use the "Full Reply" method.

Now, let's see one of those screen shots (shift-command-4 to select a part of the screen). smile.gif

You didn't think I would let that slide, did you?! tongue.gif laugh.gif

Congrats, Greg!

"BROWSE" vs "Choose File" is the difference in the skins you and I are using (we've all had this round the merry-go-round discussion before ... hehehe), and that's why I gave you a screen cap so you could see where the oddly labeled buttons are found.

Yup, that's correct ABD and I think I said that in the other reply. If not ... now it's here. smile.gif

What??!!! You expect us to read all the other posts?! eek2.gif Even the ones we didn't write? wallbash.gif

On second thought, your first response didn't actually say one could not use the Fast Reply window. You only said to open "the regular reply box and not the Fast Reply." Since these were simply your 'directions' I did not assume that it was not possible to use the Fast Reply window. And, in fact, Your Honor, it is possible to post an image with the Fast Reply window. As Exhibit #16 plainly shows, an image can be uploaded/linked/placed in a post from the Fast Reply window. It simply must be already on the interweb! What cannot be done in that window is to upload something directly from ones drive.

No further questions. And the Defense rests. salute.gif tongue.gif

Yeah, and on mine, the "Manage Current Attachments" pull down is on the left side.

"Choose File" and "Upload" are located where yours are.

Now that's weird. Plain ol' weird. I just tried every skin here and I have the "Manage" pull down on the right hand side. The only diff might be our browsers. I use FF. Either way, it's just weird.

At least you were able to figure out how to upload an attachment to the board. smile.gif

Just happened again... trying to edit out the first part and last part of a long quote with several "paragraphs" separated by a space. I was definitely using the backspace key. It was deleting normally until the cursor ended up at the beginning of the last line, then it took out the '[' instead of the blank line above.

I guess it is just this non-Mac keyboard. It must speak a different dialect! biggrin.gif
