iMac G5 PPC, OS 10.4.11
I have followed ALL the procedures I could find, but still cannot have the date AND time to show up in the Menu bar, only the day of the week and the time, NO date. Tried to use the System’s International Preference to no avail. Could someone take over this thick head of mine and lead my moron neurons to drive my fingers to achieve what I want, that is to show AND the date, AND the time, in the Menu bar, e.g.
Thursday, 21 August, 2008, 01:00 PM. Right now I can only get, Thu 1:00 PM.

I use MagiCal:
http://www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/magical
it's free, does what you want.
-
From MacUpdate... FYI.
"Some users are experiencing stability issues with MagiCal under Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) when attempting to access the preferences. We are working on a solution to this problem, and a fix will be released as soon as possible. In the meantime, Leopard users may wish to revert to the 1.1 alpha release, available in the "Related Downloads" section."
I use MenuCalendarClock. It is also free and it also does what you want; there are around ten display options. I don't know how the two apps compare feature-wise but I use MenuCalendarClock for the handy drop-down calendar that show appointments in a list below the calendar. It also provides easy access to iCal. The paid version adds one or two features that I didn't miss before I got a license via a MacUpdate bundle...
-
I use wClock... probably available on VersionTracker... or here for sure.
Allows many options as to how to display day / date / time on the menu bar...
Believe it is free/donation ware...

I thought we had answered this just a few months ago...
Not sure your Date & Time Pref Panel is the same as this (in Tiger). But there is a check box for including the Day of the Week.
[attachment=1024:Day_and_...menu_bar.jpg]
Remember, the Formatting of Dates and Times are located in the "International" Pref Panel. You might want to check that first.

Yep.
click on "No. 2" in the first post

Why, every time someone asks this, does everyone give all the third party (not necessary!!!) alternatives to simply customizing the display in the System Prefs as per the instructions (which I KNOW I've copied here before) and are found via the link below?
Y'all just like to do things the hard way?
http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/06/11/how-to...n-os-x-menu-bar
Follow the instructions exactly (and yes, you may need to mess around a bit with spaces, commas etc. to get it to look right) and voila.
I'm setting up my son's new iMac (his birthday/Christmas present - a 20" 2.66GHz model) and just changed the date in the menu bar to read:
Thu, Aug 21, 2008 9:13PM
Edit: And while I was busy replying, Gregg beat me to this - different link, but same solution!
Actually, I don't know why APPLE doesn't make a point of explaining this too...

I can only speak for myself, but I've tried the option available and found it lacking. I like having the drop down calendar that wClock provides -- and the way wClock works -- which I actually find easier than dinking with my system prefs.
But, being a smart cookie (sometimes), I kept the info you've shared; because you never know when something will break.
-
Not denying that there are "fancier" solutions out there - just think we should operate on the KISS principle first - and then list the other options. In this case, I get the feeling that people keep forgetting the simple solution.

Maybe I should add it to our permanent links page...

Wellll, it might be that at least a few of us have been using third-party date and time apps for soooo looong that we don't think of the "alternative."
-
I'm as guilty as any when it comes to suggesting 'alternative' solutions. I think what Paddy may be saying is that we should try to answer a question with tools that every one will already have, meaning the OS or built-in apps. If it can't be done that way, then we should state that and offer another solution. Either way, we can always offer our favorite solutions and why we like it.

That's a nice idea, but I wouldn't be using an alternative if the Apple-supplied solution worked for me...
-
Mayo, I'm curious as to which bits don't work (or whether you're actually referring to third-party features)? Which OS are you using?
-
Paddy, I'm using 10.5.4. The features I gain are easy and quick access to my iCal calendar along with my appointments and to-do list in a drop-down calendar. If I need to get into iCal for some reason a double-click does the trick.
I also have the option of selecting a nifty old-time paper desk calendar option with the date in the Finder Menu Bar!
Kindly keep in mind that most of the MenuCalendarClock functions are available in the freeware version, so it's not like a person has to pay in order to obtain a lot more functionality.

Yeah, I beat ya by almost two months!
So, jb did ya try it? ...and like it??

Phew! At least I didn't have a post in that one!
And in it, you said:

We discussed this a while ago (didn't search for the original thread - easier just to link to the directions again!)
What day is it???
If it's Tuesday, this must be TechSurvivors!

Thank you all.
As I had written in my initial post, my computer is an iMac G5 PPC, OS 10.4.11, repeat OS 10.4.11. So any solutions for OS 10.5.x, does not necessarily mean it would work with OS 10.4.11.
Again, as I wrote, I referred to this thick head of mine! No matter what I try using the System’s way of selections, i.e. Date&Time and International Panel Preferences, I can only display the day and time. See the following Preferences pictures, Date & Time Clock, International, and the resultant Menu Bar 1.
[attachment=1032:Date___Time_Clock.jpg]
[attachment=1033:International.jpg]
[attachment=1034:Menu_Bar_1.jpg]
I finally gave up on the “Apple’ way, and elected to follow Thomas England’s (and other’s) suggestion to use MagiCal. I now have what I have been wanting for years. See picture Menu Bar 2.

Sorry for having posted a topic that had been discussed before. No matter, I finally resolved something that had frustrated me for a long time. And thanks for the patience of all to have supported me so that I could pursue this matter to a satisfying end.
Longue vie à Techsurvivors.

Er, jb, glad you found a solution that worked, but if you noticed, the date on the blog posting I linked to was June 2006 - almost a year and a half before Tiger appeared. It works in 10.4 - honest - I did it. You have to copy and paste the day and month settings into the time setting (all in custom view) - as per the instructions. You cannot do it simply from what is offered in the custom view.

BTW - finally found the original discussion of the 4 we have now had on this subject, and in that I linked to the same set of instructions I did in this thread. At the time, I had 10.4.x installed, scout's honor!

Don't worry about bringing up an "older" topic. You never know when there might be a newer answer. Plus now I've found something I like even better than wClock.
Thanks for sticking with us, and I'm glad you found a workable solution.

Thanks Paddy and Kimmer.
Guess what! I finally got the Menu Bar to display the Apple System’s Date and Time the way I wanted. But only after reading again and again several posts here and there.
Before following Paul Stamatiou’s procedure, as suggested by Paddy and others, one has to know that 2 Preference panels are involved, Date & Time and International. Of course everybody knows that. But not everybody knows that one has to go between the 2 panels as well as between the 2 panels in the International panel several times before achieving what one wants.
The following shows why several small apps are available to make it simpler to show the Date and Time in the Menu bar.
First and foremost, in the International Preference panel:
- In the Region box, select ‘Custom’.
- Select Formats.
- Select ‘Customize’ in the Dates section.
- Select Show ‘Short’.
a) If there is anything in the box following, select the first item, ensure it is highlighted, select Menu bar Edit, Select All, and Delete.
b) If there is nothing in the box, proceed to the next step.
- Select Show ‘Medium’. Repeat steps as in the ‘Short’ steps a) and b) above.
- Select Show ‘Long’. Repeat steps as in the ‘Short’ steps a) and b) above.
- Select Show ‘Full’. Repeat steps as in the ‘Short’ steps a) and b) above.
- Select OK.
- Select ‘Customize’ in the Times section.
- Select ‘Customize’ in the Dates section.
- Select Show ‘Medium’.
- Click and Drag the Date Elements, one at atime, in the desired order, in the box under the Show selection. Example, click and drag the Day of the Week to the box. Disregard the name of the day. Once in the box, click on the element. Notice a small downward arrow to the right of the element. Click on it and select the way this element is to be shown, e.g. long or short.
- Repeat for the other Date Elements.
- Click on the first element in the box under the Show selection.
- Select Menu bar Edit, Select All, and Copy.
- Select OK.
- Select ‘Customize’ in the Times section.
- Select Show ‘Medium’.
- Paste the Copied Date Elements in the box under the Show selection.
- Click and Drag the Time Elements, one at atime, in the desired order, in the box under the Show selection. Insert the Elements before or after the copied Date Elements as desired.
- Select OK.
- Close the International Preference panel.
- Open the Date & Time Preference panel.
- Select the Clock section.
- Check ‘Show the date and time’. If unchecked the Date and Time will not show in the Menu bar.
- View in ‘Menu Bar’ or ‘Window’.
- View as ‘Digital’ or ‘Analog’.
- Check ‘Display the time with seconds’, if desired. Note: This selection overrides the selection made in the 'Second' Time element in the International Preference panel.
- Check ‘Show AM/PM’, if desired. Note: This selection is grayed out if the ‘Use a 24 hour clock’ below is checked OR if the 'Hour' Time element in the International Preference panel is selected as 24 hour.
- Ensure ‘Show the day of the week’ is UNCHECKED, if the day of the week was added as a 'Date' Element in the Dates section of the International Preference Panel. Otherwise there will be 2 day inscriptions in the Menu bar.
- Check ‘Flash the time seperators’, if desired.
- Check ‘Use a 24-hour clock, if desired. Note: This selection overrides the selection made in the 'Hour' Time element in the International Preference panel.
Lots of “ifs and buts”. No wonder so many people, like me, who could not ‘easily and readily’ set up their Date and Time in the Menu bar.
For instance how is someone to know that the selections in the Dates and Times Show 'Short', 'Medium', 'Long', and 'Full' selections must ALL be erased before entering new Dates and Times elements in the International panel?
Anyway all is well again in jb's world. Still, I will use MagiCal as it allows me to bold the characters.

I didn't do much in the way of deleting, jb - just customized the date the way I wanted it and then copied that into the medium time panel. Had to adjust spacing a bit, but that was about it. Anyway, as long as everyone's happy!

if you google wclock Kelly says:

OK, now let's all agree to link to THIS thread whenever someone asks the question again.

Well, at least jb didn't have to go to all the trouble of downloading and starting-up a program!

Guess what! I finally got the Menu Bar to display the Apple System’s Date and Time the way I wanted.

That's what really matters. Bringing up a topic that's been through the wringer isn't a problem.
-
Thanks Paddy - I used your link and have finally got the date in the menubar; it had been irritating having to click on the time to find out the date! Seem to remember OS9 allowed for that without a lot of fiddling about. But I could well be wrong - after all, I am a man
