Title: Banner is wonky
Post by: kimmer on August 24, 2008, 12:03:18 PM
I like the new banner, but it's too large and has messed up the top part of each page for me so that I can't use the links and such that are there. In case it's a skin issue, I'm using SAGE. Here's what I see:

Sorry for the tsunami guys, my fault for not checking out how it looked after uploading in the wee hours. Realized the last banner had been up for two weeks so I quickly uploaded and did not pay attention to how it appeared. It just was a bit too large for the software to compress to standard size.
Thank HighMac for the corrected version.

Wonky is not a word that I have ever used. So I looked up the definition(s). Probably still won't ever use it.
won·ky (wngk) adj. won·ki·er, won·ki·est Chiefly British 1. Shaky; feeble. 2. Wrong; awry. [Probably alteration of dialectal wanky, alteration of wankle, from Middle English wankel, from Old English wancol, unsteady.]
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language,
wonky Adjective [-kier, -kiest] Brit, Austral & NZ slang 1. shaky or unsteady: wonky wheelbarrows, wonky knees 2. insecure or unreliable: his marriage is looking a bit wonky [dialect wanky]
Adj. 1. wonky - turned or twisted toward one side; "a...youth with a gorgeous red necktie all awry"- G.K.Chesterton; "his wig was, as the British say, skew-whiff" askew, awry, cockeyed, skew-whiff, lopsided crooked - having or marked by bends or angles; not straight or aligned; "crooked country roads"; "crooked teeth" 2. wonky - inclined to shake as from weakness or defect; "a rickety table"; "a wobbly chair with shaky legs"; "the ladder felt a little wobbly"; "the bridge still stands though one of the arches is wonky" rickety, shaky, wobbly unstable - lacking stability or fixity or firmness; "unstable political conditions"; "the tower proved to be unstable in the high wind"; "an unstable world economy"

"Wonky" is a common word over here, as in wonky table which either has loose legs or is standing on an uneven floor or a wonky wheel that is out of true.
Never heard of "wanky" which sounds too much like a rather rude insult aimed at someone who has shown unusual stupidity resulting in some sort of crisis. Usually for the person aiming the insult. Frequently accompanied by a hand gesture at drivers whose skills are considered less than perfect.
Guess it isn't used on that side of the pond but all the Brits will know which word I mean

Boy, if I knew I was going to cause this much of a wonky uproar, I would never have submitted the banner.

I've used wonky most of my life -- at least since HS. Don't know where I learned it. The Chicago area? By reading British mysteries? Listening to my family -- none of whom have ever been in England? I meant it as "askew or awry or amiss" since it was covering up the links. I didn't mean it as anything hideous or mean or nasty. I simply thought it might be a problem for others as well. My apologies to JW, and next time I'll tell Kris on the QT.
BTW, I think it's a spiffy banner. I adore pics of the rolling seas.

QUOTE
The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine which uses a rotary design to convert pressure into a rotating motion instead of using reciprocating pistons. Its four-stroke cycle is generally generated in a space between the inside of an oval-like epitrochoid-shaped housing and a roughly triangular rotor. This design delivers smooth high-rpm power from a compact, lightweight engine.

wonk noun, informal, derogatory a studious or hardworking person
How can a banner be wonky?

Wonk is not the same as wonky, so let's not even stretch it.
Wonk = noun Wonky = adjective
QUOTE
Definition of Wonky: wonky |ˈwä ng kē| adjective ( -kier , -kiest ) informal crooked; off-center; askew : you have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth.
I simply meant (and again, I'm really, really sorry I brought this up and used this word) ... that the banner was a bit large and it was askew or awry (out of the normal or correct position) and covering up links.
Please, can we let this go? Please.

'Wonky' has only recently [this decade] entered my vocab.
I use it to describe anything not functioning smoothly or properly, or 'off' in some way: [E.G., the Mac is acting kinda wonky today; the TS server has been wonky on and off for an hour; my back is feeling wonky so it's painful standing-up or sitting-down; my sell-fone reception is wonky in certain parts of town; the leftover spaghetti sauce smells a bit wonky].
I like it. Hey Mikey!

OK, maybe I can get this thing going again with what I first heard in this area (extreme South-Western Tennessee) about 45 years ago. "Tump." or "Tumped over." As in, "He was riding his tricycle but it slipped off the sidewalk and he tumped over!" It's used rarely, many times by children, but it was new to me back them. Seems to be a transliteration If that's the correct term ) of "dumped" and "turned over."

Never heard "tump', but it's probably like 'ginormous'.
Actually I combine words all the time while I'm speaking. People look at me funny for a few seconds before they 'get it'.
...maybe they look at me funny for another reason...
