Hi all,
I just found an interesting site that is dedicated to finding a solution to the noisey fan problem on the Mirrored Drive Door G4's that Apple sold between about August, 2002 and January. That's when Apple released a newer, quieter model.
The following message is designed to be sent to friends in an email message, but I think it will work well here. I just want to get the word out to folks who may be trying to live with a noisey G4. The link will take you to a petition to sign that is intented to be sent to Apple. I was signer #604.
.............
Dear Friends,
I have just read and signed the online petition:
"Apple: Power Mac G4 MDD Noise Issue"
hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at:
Petition Site
I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself.
Best wishes,
Bruce Forsberg

In case you're wondering about how loud the MDD G4's are, take a look at these movies.

When I got mine I visited the relevant sites and did the Open Firmware reset all fix.
After that it's fine 99% of the time.
Also did the Firmware fix but it didn't change much.
As I undestand it there were a few machines with bad logic boards.
These are eligible for a free fix.
If yours is still bad maybe you should persue that.

Bruce, many thanks for the QT movie link. I had a real good laugh, I mean REALLY GOOD.
I like the movie by Michael Lucker the best, but Kevin Wood and Tom Dams are close behind...
But seriously, I cannot believe how Apple can afford to alienate loyal Mac users. Get A Grip, Steve And Company!

"and did the Open Firmware reset all fix."
How do you do that?

kelly,
The logic board and original RAM were already replaced on my G4. The firmware update fixes the "turbo speed" of the CPU fan, but the noise level of my computer is loud and constant.
The two power supply fans are the noisiest of the four fans that run inside the box.
I am currently on a mission, along with a lot of other folks, to get Apple's attention and to try and get them to fix these machines at no cost. Or, if that's out of the question, to allow us to modify/replace the fans without voiding the warranty.
Mayo, glad you liked the movies! I sure got a kick out of watching 'em.

It's in here Bill. Why do you ask?
