I read an article earlier today on this subject and had the same reaction - interesting that IBM is now viewing Apple as a competitor. Of course - Papermaster was VP of the blade server division, so one might surmise that Apple wants him for expertise in the server market. However, as the NY Times pointed out today:
QUOTE
Apple also has a small business selling a server version of its computer systems that is aimed at corporate applications. However, Mr. Papermaster has also held other positions at I.B.M. Apple may also be interested in Mr. Papermaster’s processor design expertise. Earlier this year, Apple purchased PA Semi, a small microprocessor design firm that was developing microprocessors based on the I.B.M. Power design. At the time Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said that Apple would use that expertise to create hardware for its iPhones and iPods.
Either way, IBM is not happy.
IBM is not happy.
I Be Mad!
I think their more concerned about the server market. The VP had access to various inside information and company secrets. See <
this article>.
I haven't read the article but the first thing I thought about is also the Server market yes.
I recently ended a temporary contract with a company here in the UK for profiling and lead generation for one of the major distributors of IT hardware (networking).
Although I'm an Apple person, I didn't really expected to see Apple on the level of suppliers when it came to servers and networking.
Most companies are still using a different manufacturer but Apple was mentioned over IBM sooo.... you can imagine that IBM is somewhat mad about it
Plus... I always see those legal fights as an "easy" way to make money (only thing you have to do is win hehehe).
