Does anyone know where I can buy a new or used (pre-owned!) 14" Intel-based MacBook? I searched the Internet but could not find one. Did Apple ever make a 14" MacBook?

The last iBook was a 14" G4 (1.4GHz) but you don't want that - it would be orphaned too quickly by the OS, which will be Intel-only as of 10.6.
How about a used/discontinued 15" MacBook Pro instead? I know...more expensive, but a machine that is far more capable and will no doubt last longer because of that.
This one's a good deal (it's the same model I have - for which I paid 2X what it is now selling for!)
MacMall - 2.33GHz MacBook Pro (new) for $1299 after rebate. There are also a bunch of promotions that go with it - you can get Parallels and a case for free (after rebates) as well.

Will my son's iMac, purchased in January '07 be snowed in by the OS? Frozen? Unable to be upgraded...
I don't know what processor it has.

The first Intel iMac was introduced in July 2006, so unless he snagged a G5 at a reduced price he is probably OK.

Thank you, sir! I don't even know what "G" it is. But I'm sure of the date. His iBook was stolen in December of '06 and our insurance contributed towards the new iMac.

If it is a G "anything" (G3, G4 or G5) it is a PowerPC, pre-Intel Mac...

Tom, keep checking the Apple Store in the Refurbished Mac section.
These deals are about as good as I've seen. Mayo already posted that link, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to post it again.
And, after working on both my wife's MacBook, with the 13.3 " screen, which is considerably smaller than the 14" on my iBook, I much prefer the screen on my daughter's MacBook Pro. The main difference is the the iBook has a much more square screen than the MacBooks. The height of the screen on a MacBook is pretty small in comparison. The 15.4" screen on the MacBook Pro makes a huge difference compared to the MacBook, IMO.

If you want a matte screen, ya gotta act fast, it would seem! As for the price difference - if you were considering Parallels and need a laptop bag anyway, it more or less makes up for the difference.

Regarding MacMall: Years ago I did an order with MacMall for a friend. In those days MacMall charged an exorbitant amount for shipping: it was around $140 for a G3 iMac and a few peripherals! A few months ago I was researching the purchase of a 24" matte screen iMac for a client... I came across quite a few negative reviews of MacMall, with its handling of rebates being problematic for a lot of folks. There were so many complaints that I decided to skip a very good deal on an iMac with a slightly faster CPU and upgraded video card and went with a standard model refurb from Apple. The refurb arrived in like-new condition and my client was thrilled. She paid around $1300 with free shipping for a Mac that originally cost $1999.

Right now, as of this morning, there are two MacBook Pro models with a matte screen available in the Apple store refurb section that Mayo and I linked in previous posts. One is $1249, the other one is $1299.
Doesn't get much better than that. I'm swallowing hard trying to restrain myself.
