Title: Do You Dislike The "Genre" Pane In iTunes 8 As Much As I Do?
Post by: Mayo on November 09, 2008, 02:44:33 PM
Here is how to get rid of the "Show Genre When Browsing" option:

Quit iTunes if it is running.

In Terminal type or copy/paste the following:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE

Hit the Return key.

Start-up iTunes. Voila! The genres are gone! I have no idea why there is no way to do this via the iTunes View Options...

The default setting in iTunes 8 cannot be changed under View/View Options. (Kindly note the last sentence in my previous post...)

Maybe not in the newer versions, I only have the first iTunes 8 (build 35). But there is a list of several dozen columns that you can choose from in he "View Options" menu. Not in the prefs, just the regular, always visible iTunes menu bar. Haven't had Genre column since ever. But I can see how some would have lots of different genres and need that sort sorting? dntknw.gif

Mayo is referring to the Genre column/box which is the first one on the left when you select "Show Browser" under View. I never have this showing actually, so hadn't noticed. Unchecking the box in View Options doesn't make it go away in the Browser, though it does go away in list view. smile.gif

It's list view below the browser thingy. I don't know - I don't use anything else either, Jim, but obviously some people find the browser useful.

There ya go! If everyone else would just do things the way we do... dntknw.gif

Sorry to imply you didn't know what you were talking about, Mayo, I should know better! blush-anim-cl.gif wallbash.gif

How the heck do you find anything if you don't utilize the browser view??? I have almost 500 CDs in iTunes!

Perhaps you need a "URLMP" for iTunes?! smile.gif I use iTunes about twice a week to burn a CD. And then delete the tracks! I don't even own that many CDs! But I was thinking there was a column that listed the CD name. dntknw.gif I'm just a fan of list view, at least in iTunes and especially in the Finder. wink.gif Anyway, I'm sure there will be some who will benefit from your trick to make iTunes more user-friendly. salute.gif

I just opened iTunes to see what all the excitement was about. I think I see what you were trying to get rid of, in the "Browser" part. Wonder if your 'fix' changed the same 'problem in the "List" view? There is a space at the top of the list, that I usually keep minimized or hidden, but it has three boxes, "Genre, Artist and Album." If you are looking for another way to look for stuff in your group of Albums, maybe that would help. Just not sure what you want to do (other than keep that stupid "Genre" stuff hidden!). dntknw.gif

Would you mind checking "List" view and see if the "Genre" section is deleted there, also? Please! Devilish2.gif  notworthy.gif

Never mind! wallbash.gif What I thought you were calling a "Browser" is actually part of the "List" view, which is what I keep hidden! What I thought you were referring to is actually called a "Grid" view. So, both the List view, with the Browser showing, and the Grid view have the wasted space for the Genre data. Glad I finally figured out what I am talking about! rolleyes.gif doh.gif

Say ... I'm still using iTunes 7.6 (29) ... and I'd really be curious to see some screen caps of all this do-da stuff. I've hesitated to upgrade mainly because I use iTunes every day (except when I go listen to the local news thanks to Paddy helping me out there).
