Another option that deserves it's own thread is Bean New document containing selection. This opened an application called, believe it or not, "Bean" that does not appear to be on my hard drive. About Bean led me to the website: http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html so I quickly used the Services Menu to save the URL on a Stickie and e-mailed it to my office address.
I also checked for a Bean update, and in that process learned that the version that had opened a Bean document was 1.1.0 but version 1.3.3 has been available since June 20th. Now, that seems more like an application that's on my hard drive, not on the web, but I couldn't find it. Any Bean experts out there?
Bean is, of course, a word processor. It's open source, and if I knew more about that, I might be able to solve my own "mystery".

I've heard of Java Beans.... small Java based applets to do specific tasks.... but that is the extent of my knowledge about that (quite literally)...

For Tiger users, there is another program - Hot Services, free from Maker of DevonThink (http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/index.html). Hot Services moves the Services Menu to its own, more accessible place on the Menu Bar. Devon Technologies has a number of other free applications that are worth checking out.

Of course. What I can't find is the application itself. Spotlight's "Top Hit" is Bean: an OSX Word Processor it is found in Safari's History folder (with a strange http/%2... filename) but when I accepted the risk of opening an "application downloaded from the internet" (via Spotlight) it opened the web page where you can, um, download the application from the internet. Interestingly, the date and time given for when it was downloaded coincides with when I invoked the above Bean option from the Services menu. It just didn't place an application icon in the, uh, Applications folder, or anywhere else that I can find.

If you like the Services Menu and want to make it more efficient to use, download Service Scrubber... This handy program allows you to delete items from the Services Menu (Third Party applications only) to shorten the list. It also allows you to add keyboard shortcuts to items in the Services Menu. Works with both Tiger and Leopard.
I think to delete items, you just go to the Services Menu folder and drag them out. But I don't think adding shortcuts would be possible with just the OS's tools.

It's usually a (various colored) furry, four-legged, long tailed animal. Able to leap tall buildings (refrigerators are a snap). Can climb drapes (unless declawed). It is often seen near milk. Some spend most of the day under furniture (especially beds). Some are known to be awake for as much as two hours a day! Many take to sleeping along side/on top of people asleep in bed at night.
