Title: Memorable Sayings
Post by: Texas Mac Man on February 03, 2009, 03:30:16 PM
Over the years, I’ve heard many memorable sayings, but two in particular have stuck with me. Don’t remember when or  where I read or heard them. Occasionally, I’ll get the chance to repeat them in a conversation. (As I get older, it's harder to remember, but I don't think I'll ever forget these two sayings.)

Luck is the residue of hard work.  Example: Pittsburgh's comeback win in the Super Bowl.

Words don’t have meanings. People have meanings for words.

Care to share your memorable sayings?

Memorable? As in "memory?!" Whazat? smile.gif

I just like to make up my own, it usually causes a pause in the conversation while the others try to figure out where they'd heard something very similar, but not quite... Thinking.gif Thinking almost always causes people to 'stop and enjoy the...quietness!' tongue.gif

It's important to have an open mind, but not so open that it can't hold a thought.  --unknown

If art and life are the same, then one of them is unnecessary.  -- one of my college professors

I like that one; it's going into my Eudora signature list.

Here are a few:

"Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur."
 (Anything in Latin sounds profound.)

"It is not the poet but what he observes that is revealed as obscene."
Lawrence Ferlinghetti on Allen Ginsberg's poem "Howl"

“Les cimetières sont pleins de gens irremplaçables.”
(The cemeteries are full of irreplaceable people.)
          Old French Saying

(I hope that this one is OK for a PG-rated forum! I don't know why it makes me laugh, but it does...)

"Heterosexuals say "our side of the fence is right and your
side is wrong."  Homosexuals say "your side of the fence is wrong
and our side of the fence is right."  Bisexuals say "Oooh, this
fence feels good."

"ALL THOUGHT FLIES AWAY" -- Cut into the head that is a gate to the garden of Bomarzo in the province of Viterbo, Italy!

This is especially appropriate for me on friday evenings!

Bomarzo is one of the places I would go if I could; it is a "garden of monsters" created under orders from Pier Francesco Orsini on family lands in the late 16th century.  I don't think the picture itself is any larger than necessary to actually read the words but I could make it smaller if it scares you too much!  biggrin.gif

Oh, jw reminded me of another of my favorites, similar to the one he quotes:

"Better to listen ... talking only repeats what you already know."

Don't know the author who made this observation regarding politicians "talk a lot but don't say much"

Since we just completed the Christmas season and are entering the economic stimulus season, this one is apropos.

Christmas is a time when kids tell Santa what they want and adults pay for it. Deficits are when adults tell government what they want, and their kids pay for it.

I swear this was Justice Brandeis or Frankfurter, but I can't find it anywhere on the web:

"Justice must not only be done, it must also be seen to be done."

My Dad's mother always used to say "Waste not, Want not"   and

"Fill your plate with as much as you want, but be sure to eat all you take."

And we never went for want at her house! Good religious people.

My Grandad never said a bad word about anybody, and was one of the most gentle and kindest person you ever met. I try to emulate him, but occasionally find myself slipping. nono.gif

I just came across this one in Suzanne Somers' new book "Breakthrough: 8 Steps To Wellness":

"No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit."

                                           Helen Keller
