Title: Does TS make you feel Dumb?
Post by: kelly on May 20, 2003, 09:57:37 AM
We keep saying that there are no dumb questions.
I just wondered if some people aren't taking this to heart?
I know some of tacit's stuff, for example, is way over my head.
But I don't mind.
And I know that tacit really enjoys explaining this stuff.
I'm hoping that people aren't intimidated by some things.
Please jump right in and feeel free to ask about anything you
want to know more about.

Now that you mention it kelly...
Since I went to USB and Firewire, I had a thought that I could convert my external Hard drive cases to USB. I know how to do it, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a place to get the USB to ATA plugs.
So far the only option I've found is to buy some cheap USB 2.0 notebook externals on ebay and use the connections and circuitry in those.
There were always adapter kits for SCSI around in the voodoo days.
Just something I want to do.

I feel dumb on TS very regularly.
Speaking of feeling dumb, Snuffy, you're going way out of my league there.
Great avatar.
Take care.
Chris
P.S. - Oh, and yes, Tacit does intimidate me.

Does TS make you feel Dumb? On the contrary, I feel better informed about a lot of things after visiting this forum. I learn things that I didn't know I was even curious about. To Tacit and all the other knowlegeable posters: I'm not intimidated, but rather impressed, that you can teach an old fuddy like me new and interesting things. Thank you all for your input.

Knowing there are no dumb questions.....I don't feel dumb here. That's one of the reasons I keep coming back!

Kelly, one of the things that makes TS a different place (aside from Bill ) is that when you ask a question you never get "Why don't you just buy a newer Mac" or "Well, what did you think would happen when you hit "ok" to reformat???" You get answers. Sometimes you get more than one answer--and sometimes they aren't the same answer. But you get answers, not attitude.
And when the answers are pretty darn complicated to many of us, there's usually somebody like Tacit who has the rare skill of being able to translate it into normal words. (When Tacit begins an explanation with "What your hard drive is saying to AppleWorks is 'Yo AppleWorks, I need more RAM'..." I know eventually it'll make sense.) On other situations where there's not an easy way to explain it, for example all things terminal with OSX, somebody like kps will say the words that I need to hear "You really don't need to worry about this, or even understand it--just do the upgrade, sit back, and enjoy the OS." And then there are the many private emails of support and help that go on behind the scenes. Oh yeah, let's not forget that one guy who finds links to sites to just about any issue that comes up here.
Bottom line, no TS does not make me feel stupid. When I need to feel that way, I can go to other sites. Or just let my teenage daughters look at me with amazement that they've mastered all the knowledge of the universe and I still no nothing.

What I'd like to know is how do you fix a blasted string on a stupid YO-YO!?!
Keep tying the knot .... swing it down and as soon as it hits the pavement .... off I go chasing the thing!
Thought I had it once. Gave the puppy a real swing and it slammed on my big toe and still went down the road with me hopping after the sucker.!.
Gotten to the point that the neighbors kid doesn't care one bit if he gets his yo-yo back. The little turd is getting his jollys off laughing at me.
Do I feel stupid? Nah.

Thanks RobW - just got to this thread and you've said it all. Sometimes when I get the answer to a query my reaction is 'Doh' . But I've never got a response that belittled me, even if the poster replying must be thinking 'Dimbo'. So, no, TS never makes me feel dumb, because I know I'll always get a civil response. So everyone.

Certainly TS doesn't make me feel dumb. You are all a God send... and have been so helpful........but I must say a P.C. or the Mac can sure make me feel dumb. So much to learn, so little time. I enjoy the challenges and even though they make me say dirty words, I won't give up.....trish

Snuffy.
Are you asking to convert a > 10 MB/p/sec SCSI to 1.25 MB/p/sec USB?
Or am I just being Dumb?

TS never makes me feel dumb even when I know for sure I have been.
Civility reigns! If someone famous hasn't already said that ... they should have.

Dumb? You? Nevare! You're from IOWA!
Just the connections in the external HD box, Kelly.
Shouldn't be a problem removing the centronics 50 external connections and the scsi ribbon inside the box and replacing with USB to 39 pin ATA...at least I don't think so. Works pretty much the same as the old 50 to 68 pin internal HD adaptors small circuit board an all.
Just need a resource for the USB to ATA adaptor. I've searched the net...nada.

Sorry to repeat myself Gary.
But it still looks like you're trying to convert SCSI to USB.
You can't just change the connector without changing throuput.
You'd be going from that 10 MBs to 1.25 MBs I mentioned.
They make SCSI to USB Convertors.
But you already have a SCSI Card so I don't understand what's up.

No dumb questions...but this may be a dumb effort.
Just want to test the viability of converting SCSI external hard drive boxes.
Guess I'm tripping over the leading edge. I though USB 2.0 was here. Maybe firewire?

Speaking of attitude:
does anyone out there appreciate the Apple new music ads?
I don't!
I've seen three different ones so far and two were horrendous.
The third showed a girl of maybe 12 singing sweetly to a song and then giggling. That one was nice.

I have that exact box but in centronics 50 SCSI. That was the point. Maybe I'll get this one.

Well, I've avoided this topic, because, well, I was afraid that I didn't just feel dumb, but the worst case scenario. Now Diana, has cleared it up for me:

See? What a relief! But durn if this place doesn't make me feel just a bit backward. Well, the truth is, I don't understand a teeny tiny fraction of what is written here. Now, I'm telling y'all this in confidence, because I trust my extended TS family, so don't anybody give away my deep dark secret.

The 'attitude' comment is the key! There definitely are sites that will get you the answer but make you 'pay' for it with lost civility.
BTW, didn't I just see a post from Francine?! Where you been? What you been doin'? How're things in NY?! (I think!) Made any of them ferin' trips?!
I just feel dumb when my wife still can remember the difference between Quiting a program and closing its windows! And she has never worked with a PC, so it's not that shutdown box on their windows. I just can't think of any more analogies/instructions/examples/demonstraions/menu checks/tear off menus/etc to help her! If she would just visit here a little, I'll bet she would find some one with the right words...

ABD, try this on your wife:
Tell her to imagine she has started up the car. (Opens application) Then she turns the radio on (one window open). She turns on the lights (second window). ...then the windshield wipers (third window).
She can have all these windows open and do various things with them but turning them off does not stop the car from running. You have to do that separately.
There may be some clues that it is still running like noise or water vapor from tailpipe as there are clues with a program (icon in dock or app switcher, different menu, etc.)
(And if there weren't a battery for power, turning off the car would turn off (close) those windows, too.)

Dumb? Not at all. My kids think I'm a genius now. Little do they know that I get polite answers and clear instructions for even the most basic questions. I agree, never have I been told to get a new computer. If I could, I would.

Nice try Kris! But the car rings a bell if you leave the keys in it! And the lights come on as soon as it starts (GM). Lets face it. With all windows closed, it is only by seeing/looking for rather small details that we know a program (most of them, anyway) is still running.
Oh well, at least it doesn't hurt to double-click a programs alias when it is running. And those are usually files, so they will open a window with that action.
But thanks for the analogy, it can't hurt to try another one!
