It looks like we may be purchasing a new Mac next month.
I would like to have the choice of booting to 9 or X.
I have been looking at the new Macs at the Apple site and it looks as though they are only bootable to OSX.2, as predicted.
The Old, New dual processor Macs, (867 GHz,1GHz,1.25 GHz) models still give dual booting capabilities.
Does anyone who has one of these new fangled (New world) Macs have an opinion, good or bad, as to problems with the dual processor vs. the single. I have seen on the boards that they run a little hotter but that's about it.
How about a used machine?
TIA

Gary, Apple still ships one model of a G4 Tower that is dual boot...
Dual 1.25 GHz G4 Tower
-
Hi Gary,
I have a lightly used PowerMac Dual 1.25 (actually dual 1.0 Ghz) G4 with all the goodies..(512 megs, Superdrive, keyboard/mouse...more details if interested). It will also come with Microsoft Office, Dreamweaver MX suite, VMWare with Win98, all disks/books/paperwork and we still even have the original box. Bought in December 2002 (actually Nov. 23, 2002) It still has the ability to dual boot to 9.2. (addition: this one was not noisy at all)
We tried to be switchers...really. It just hasn't worked out. Things don't switch that easy when you really, really have to get work done. The machine is great...nothing wrong with it, turns out we're just not switchers...yet.
I also have a 7500 Powermac G4 desktop. Gary or anyone interested can email me through the board.
Edit to correct my faulty memory...receipt gives the details..

So you definitely want a Tower Gary?
That Dual 1.25 that Apple will sell you is one of the "older" models.
Duals are nice. If you get an older Dual MDD you'll have to be aware of the "noise" issue.
Refurbished machines from The Apple Store or a reputable dealer like smalldog
are a good, pretty safe, way to save money.
Sorry it's not working out for you Diana.

Meant to add these.

"That Dual 1.25 that Apple will sell you is one of the "older" models."
Kelly.
Are you talking about the one Kps posted?
If yes. Then I take it they're new but have been sitting on the self already to go.?.
Do you have link (I'm saying this to Kelly ... do you have a link! sheesh) that states they are the older models?
-
Not off hand Bill.
But after reading a few thousand words on the subject there's no doubt in my mind.

How to avoid / how to quiet the Leafblower Macs
(AKA "The Windtunnels")
_______________________________________________
Why you might want a Mac that can still boot OS 9.x.x.
______________________________________________
At a minumum, to be able to migrate well into Mac OSX.x.x, get an AGP G4 machine. The earliest of these (a used 400-500 MHz "Sawtooth" ) will probably run you $700+.
Enjoy,
Epaminondas

You may want to wait fot this ?
-
kps,
The only problem with the G4 1.25 GHz model you mentioned is that Apple wants $2499. for it, where as the new G4 1.25 GHz
model sells for $1999. I just can't see paying an extra $500.
It doesn't seem right, or maybe I'm just cheap.
I'm going to ahve to buy a new monitor and ram for it too so i'm trying to keep the cost down.
Kelly,
Do you know if the model that Diana has (PowerMac Dual 1.25 G4) is one of the noisy ones?
I'm not hooked on getting a tower but I do want as much upgradeability as possible. That's why I was thinking tower.
-
You're absolutely right Gary and I should have mentioned that. The pricing is downright 'obsene', seems like Apple is penalizing those that still need to use OS 9 in a dual boot configuration.
-
kps,
I know. The pricing doesn't make sense from a hardware standpoint but I can understand why Apple wants everyone to
get to X. It just leaves a lump in my throat and I don't think i want to give Apple an extra $500. for the option.
-
Yeah gary. Diana's machine would be one of the "noisy" ones.
They seem to vary as to how much of a factor that is.
If you're reeally concerned about this you can look for an
earlier Quicksilver model like the Dual 1 Gig or 933.
I think you should look at a Dual 867 Refurbs. They're going for great prices.
They'll continue to show up.

Thanks Kelly. I'm headed there now. I'll look at the 2x867s.
-
Well, the 867s were gone.
I'm sure when I have the money in my pocket, things will work out and I'll buy the right one.
-
Spent some time on that site Kelly you posted lastnight.
I knew about those links (and have been there before) which Mr.E posted also.
~~~~ before you all ask,yeah I'm thinking about the dual boot machines.
Came close to ordering one twice now ... it's called cold-feet. ~~~~
Beginning to hate Peanut butter with a passion Gary S! <gr>
Gary S.
As you know (I'm sure) the difference between the $1,999 and the $2,499 duals is 1) 2mb L3 cashe 2) 512 ram stick 3) dual bootable 5) larger hard-drive.
Is that worth the extra $500?
2mb L3 = well yes.
larger ram stick = Nope! big deal. 512 ram sticks go for what? Around $120 ((TOPS))!
Dual bootable = You bet! Then again ... who knows ... maybe all the third party guys will get it together where one doesn't need OS 9 soon.Although don't EVEN hold your breath on that one.!. I really can't blame Apple for moving forward. There's money out there in them woods! If the third party guys get left behind,well their piece of that there woods-money IS still there for the picken. If they don't grab it .. someone will.
Yeah think Apples counting on that? You bet.
Larger hard-drive = Nope!
Worth the extra $500? That's a call only you can make.
Kelly is right on about the dual 867s and the 933s!
My 933 is SOOOooooooo quite! Two drives. I've got the volume turned off on the Philly/NJ game.The room is dead silent. Can't EVEN hear the 'puter spinning away.
Hey, wait a minute - Sarah (SarahLee as she is known here) has two dual 867's and the first thing she complained about (to me) was the noise. The dual 867's are the mirror-door models, AKA the "Windtunnel Macs" - the Quicksilver G4's are a different (earlier model), and apparently quieter. There was no QS dual 867, just a dual 800 and a dual 1GHz. To keep the models straight, see:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powe...c_g4/index.html
In nosing around eBay, I came across something that smells like a scam of the first order:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=14912
I then went to their web site, and from there, did a "whois" check on them...that web site/domain has only existed since February 9...2003.
Then did a Google search and found this - read it all - down to the end:
http://www.powerpage.org/story.lasso?newsID=10551
BTW - Apple Developer prices are 10-20% off retail, not half of retail.
I've contacted eBay. This sort of thing, despite all the legal manouevering the seller is attempting, is what gives eBay a bad name. They should be very concerned.
Be careful out there...
BTW - I'm waiting to upgrade until later this year/early next year - curious to see what happens with the PPC 9700 chip. Thinking about a Sonnet upgrade card in the meantime, though the jury is still out on that one.
I also wouldn't get hung up on the OS 9 booting capability - once you've used X for any length of time on a new machine, you'll never want to go back. Software upgrades are not cheap, I'll grant you that, but worth it in the long run.
-
I never said Quicksilver Dual 867s.
There ain't any such animal.
Quicksilver has the Dual 800s. I think Harv has one.
Bill. Maybe Gary would be interested in your machine.
The Apple Power Macintosh G4/1.0 DP MDD, dubbed the "Mirrored Drive Doors" or "Wind Tunnel" model(s) and based on the architecture used by the Xserve, features dual 1.0 GHz PowerPC 7455 (G4) processors, both with AltiVec "Velocity Engine" vector processing units, 256k level 2 on-chip caches and 1 MB level 3 backside caches. In addition, this model ships with 256 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM, an 80.0 GB (7200 RPM) Ultra ATA/100 hard drive, a SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW), an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (AGP 4X) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM, and a digital audio sound system with a highly-efficient Tripath "Class T" amplifier. The case is similar to earlier Power Macintosh G4 models, and has the same fold down door on the side that makes upgrading very easy, but also sports decorative indentions on the front reminiscent of the "Ventiports" on a 1949 Buick Roadmaster and two "mirrored finish" external drive bays. This model ships with the Apple "Pro" keyboard and optical mouse*Apple Refurbished unit, with 1 year Apple warranty
He can be " interested " Kelly but this puppy ain't going no where.
Thanks for the link to EveryMac Paddy! I've got some studying to do.
I'll see what things look like next month.
It looks like If I had my choice I'd take a QuickSilver but they look scarce.
