Title: My screen is not wide enuff!
Post by: nels96 on May 20, 2003, 05:03:29 PM
I've not visited Techsurvivors for a while, so now I find that its messages run off the right side of my screen.

How do I fix it so the messages are all on the screen without  my having to move anything?

Thanks, nels96

Hi nels96. smile.gif

What size is your Monitor?

What resolution do you have it set to?* smile.gif

*Yes I know a sentence should not end a preposition with. smile.gif

Which browser are you using?

And which theme/skin have you set for use?

Most of the skins should shrink with the size of the window.
However, the Mac X lite and the Tubey light are based on a more restricted table setup.
If you are using either one of those, try one of the others.

Nels,
go to your "my controls" above.
From there down on the left in "options" you'll see Skin and Languages.

Check them out with the preview feature.

Been away for awhile, so I couldn't respond to the help.

But I tried to follow them and got nowhere. Still all my  TS messages run off the right side of my screen. Using NS 4.8, on iMac, running OS 9.2, standard theme and skin.

What am I missing?

Hi Nels,

I'm afraid the older versions of Netscape don't recognize the stylesheets that tell how large the table should be for the answer pages. I'm presently in Netscape 4.6.1 checking and I do see the pages extending off to the right. The tables for the thread list are OK, they abide by the percentage.

I'm going to do some studying to see if there is a way to alter the stylesheet to allow for older browsers but don't hold your breath waiting for a solution from me. unsure.gif

Your best bet is to upgrade to Netscape 7 which for the most part reads the instructions correctly.

BTW, I didn't have too much trouble with the smilies though three of them seemed to congregate in one block and duplicate creating kind of a smilie love-fest.   smile.gif

Krissel.
Ran over to NS4.7.8.  Well walked. Wasn't in that much of a hurry.
Not only the scrolling .. check out the missing button.

Then I cleared the cashe and dropped it down to 256 from 7800 and the button came back.smile.gif

That happened to me, too the first time I loaded the page. I resized the window and the correct icons showed up. Same thing on the reply page. Resized window and the smilies went back to their respective boxes.

I do wonder about those  wub.gif, unsure.gif  and  smile.gif  smilies. They seem to have an adventurous spirit.

nels, I have the same problem with "wide posts" on TS. I also use NS 4.8 with OS9.2 -
Unfortunately, upgrading to 7.x has not even been a "good bet" for me.
I did install 7.01 awhile back, but could not get the e-mail app to work.
After posting here, and one or two replies that did not uncover the solution,
I gave up. (That's when I upgraded from 4.77 to 4.8)
Yesterday, I attempted to install NS 7.02 with astonishing results.
For the first time I can ever remember, an installation failed. I got some
mysterious error message telling me the installer quit. So did I.

It's NS 4.8 or nothing for me. In addition to "wide posts" I get smilies jumping around,
(one was on a recent post of mine that I did not put there) and when people put images
into their posts, they sometimes cover up the next post. I could not read krissel's post,
at 8:09, until I got this window to work [see below] and Bill's image covered her previous
post because of the order reversal.

The other thing that happens is that I often have to try several times to get the
window I am now typing in to appear. Sometimes "Post Reply" gives me a blank screen,
other times I get everything except the "typing window". It took 3 attempts this time.

I usually visit TS while at work, on a Dell. That may soon be the only avenue I'll use.

I also do not see an "edit post" icon. Where my previous post said "blank screen" it should
have said "blank window". [Ok, I found the "edit post" button - off to the far right, of
course. So I'll also mention that I have a 17" monitor (1152X870) and I usually click on
"increase font size" in The View menu twice!]

Yes, I am hitting return, just like a typewriter, so that I don't produce a "wide post".

Unfortunately.....all the bulletin software we looked over, and let me tell ya we LOOKED, uses CSS, and NS 4.x don't do CSS  sad.gif

The other side of the coin is the software that doesn't require CSS is eitherThe quandry is we KNOW we have many members using older browsers, but we also, quite frankly, got tired of answering "why is TS so slow?", "was the site down?" and "what happened to TS last night, yesterday, two days ago...?"

As many members know, we are volunteers doing this, not always knowledgeable in all aspects of web design, and frankly, we DON'T KNOW HOW to write a style sheet compatrible with older browsers.

Please try to upgrade your browser, to another brand, if need be, so we can continue to share the pleasure of your company.

I'm running Netscape 7.01 on an iMac 333 with 9.1, 384M ram and on a 6400/G3 400 upgraded, also 9.1 with only 136M ram eek2.gif  Kris runs a flavor of IE, Dreambird uses NS 4.7x for most things and Opera for the board.

And Gregg please, please, please, try NS 7 again.  You may have gotten a bad download, and Mail works great!  It is my only mail client.  I have one complaint, on both Macs, when sending an email, it ties up the browser, I can't surf and send at the same time, and if the connection to the outgoing mail server is bad, and oh oh my, Direcway's is!, you can watch carrots grow waiting for an email to go out.  On the other hand, sending an email on the PC doesn't do the same thing.  mad.gif

Jennie, I won't try the NS download again. (I'm still on dial-up too!)What I may do is order the CD... one of these days. Thanks for the thorough explanation of the quandry, and all you do to keep this site running smoothly. (That goes for the other admins too!)  smile.gif

Gregg.
I tried experimenting around with the cashe in 4.7.8. some.
Dropping the cashe to zero doesn't make much of a difference between 256 cashe.

.... errr .... don't bark at the massager .... have you tried IE in 9?

Bang!

You didn't say I couldn't shoot!

No, I have not tried MS ...yech!... IE in 9 and have no plans to.

I'm so sorry you're all having trouble with NS4.x here... if I had my druthers, I'd like to have it work too!  sad.gif

But Opera 5 is cool, handles the board very well and doesn't interfere with NS4.76 or anything else at all... in fact I almost always have both running at the same time now.

You could give that a try... I believe you can get it for 30 free (no ad banners) and after that you can keep it for free with ad banners or pay the fee and get rid of them, which is what I did. I don't regret it... smile.gif

But if you want to go the banner route you can at least in the preferences specify what you'd like to see, so you aren't bombarded with stuff that doesn't interest you.

I'm finding that unfortunately for Classic MacOS the options for browsers are dwindling... most every, especially the free ones are OS X only, which is something I'm just not ready for. I too was NOT going to put IE on the machine!

Gregg and Dreambird

I'm the guy who started this string, (my screen aint wide enuff!) and after reading all the messages, I finally got it thru my thick skull to try TS on IE5. Eureka! ohmy.gif  So now I go thru the minor inconvenience of getting TS on IE5, tho all my usual activity is on NS4.8.

BTW, IE also solved the other problem I had with the new TS format, i.e. text too small to read.

Of course, I realize that compromises like this will accumulate until they become too much to handle.  But I think it will be worth it for a long time.

Thanks all,  nels96
