Remember the last swine flu concern in 1976?

Got my shot back then but too bad it won't have any effect this time.  no2.gif

The Kansas authorities are asking for volunteers from within their agency to take care of the distribution and answer phones.  Apparently we're talking about big runs of Tamaflu if needed; luckily there is a bunch of it stockpiled!

Q. Will putting lipstick on a pig before I kiss it, keep me from getting swine flu?

A. No.  tears.gif

If you are really compulsive you can follow the spread of it on Google Maps:

Although a little weird to see that Google Map, it's a really good example on how those maps can be used smile.gif

Thanks Krissel.

A little statistics on the Spanish Flu of 1918:
QUOTE
But there's another way to look at those statistics. You might observe, for example, that they mean that even during the worst ravages of the 1918 flu, 97.5 per cent of those infected survived and recovered. Or that 72 per cent of the population -- even in the absence of the sophisticated public health planning and infrastructure that Canada and the U.S. have since built -- was not infected during the pandemic. So, even if we had a repeat of the 1918 flu, the chances were seven out of 10 that you wouldn't catch it and if you did, the odds were better than nine out of 10 that you'd survive.

That was during the worst pandemic of the modern era and one which occurred in the days before the instantaneous communications of radio, television and the Web enabled quick public health responses.

There is also an interesting article at New Scientist that discusses where the Swine Flu comes from and how long scientists have been predicting an outbreak:

FRANCES! Stay away from that "bin!" Drink lots of fluids. Eat lots of fiber. Hey! Just go out to the barn with the ponies! They'll take care of you and share the water and 'fiber' too!

Thanks - will do!

I think it was drug withdrawal tbh, but I feel fine today.  Just had a Cornish Yarg, sliced tomato, s&p and mayo on homemade brown roll for breakfast with a glass of flat coke!  Life is good.  About to tackle the kitchen with bleach!  Washing on.  Physio later.

Sounds great for lunch, but I like a lighter fair earlier in the day. And I'm not fond of "flat" anything, especially carbonated drinks consisting mostly of sugar water...

BTW, do you also eat the nettle wrap? And the gray (yarg spelled backwards!) mold? yum.gif

To be Politically Correct to pigs (swine) the WHO to stop using term 'swine flu' to protect pigs. We don't want tho hurt the pigs feelings (or the pig raisers income).

Has anyone stopped eating pork meat or bacon?

Yes, I do eat the rind!  Hasn't killed me yet!  It was on special offer at the supermarket (£1.00 for a big lump!) on Monday!

I can only hope you're being facetious, TTM. I thought "Political Correctness went out of style years ago. And no body has even hinted that normally prepare pork being, in any way connected with any strain of swine influenza. wallbash.gif

BTW, I think the word actually evolved from the scientific name "Suidae." It is, thus a collective or plural term referring to a whole family of animals, a single member of which we usually call "pig." Since swine are thought to have evolved in Asia, it should not be unusual to see it being a vector for influenza. So, IMHO, "swine" is a perfectly appropriate term to be using.

Lastly, the misguided effort to make every thing "politically correct" is neither correct nor political. tongue.gif I see it more as an attempt to create 'code words' for terms that may not meet with approval of one group or another. Those words usually indicate a certain bias or prejudice and using a different word does nothing to change that attitude. Changing a inappropriate attitude is, IMHO, both correct and humane.

Code words, eh?

We had a report recently from police who described someone as "having a knife pointed at him over a matter of money..." In plain English it was a knifepoint robbery, which is how it went in the paper. Of course the police are trying to meet Government targets on crime reduction. Let's give the crime a new description and it disappears from the list.... rolleyes.gif

It is to take our mind off the state of the economy so that we won't realise how the Banks have been allowed to screw us for all these years.

A nice bit of pandemic piggy flu and "we are all going to die" theory just happens to divert from the more important issues around.  And thank you Mr Prime Minister for telling us that the UK is the safest place to be because the dear old government have set aside lots of vaccinations.  They are just sweethearts really with our best interests at heart.  It is like the terrorism "alledged" threats to the major airports every so often.

Call me a cynic (YOU ARE A CYNIC, FRANCES!)

Lol... right on Frances. Brown is trying so hard to hang on to his low percentage approvals that he doesn't even realise when he gafs up....
I was about to ad 'and when not' but in my opinion... he 'always' does (although I guess you have to give him some credit... but that brings us to a total different topic again) wink.gif

The flu "scare" can't possibly be an exercise to make us forget the economy. There is no way you could get that many governments and that many bureaucrats to cooperate that well! laughhard.gif

Edited to remove my opinions that were neither helpful nor interesting!

Emmmm......G20 Summit?

Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.
Baldrick: Is it as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on, and is now working for the UN at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning?
    Blackadder: Yes, it is.
    Baldrick: Mm... That's cunning!

When I sneeze it sounds like an OINK!!! I have a strong urge to waller in the mud. Other than that, I think I'm fine!!! tongue.gif

complain.gif  Too many hysterical people these days. I don't know anyone who has the flu - of any kind?

I heard something interesting, though.  The local health department thinks the reason that most seniors have not been affected is because we get flu shots each year and probably have built up some immunity.

I guess I should have explained the photo. It belongs to a Hog Farmer who has that picture painted on his motorcycle, sign, business cards, t-shirts and what not. He raises and breeds hogs for bacon and wholesales the rest to processors.

It's a well-known photo in Florida, and the bacon is delicious.

Maybe Egypt will use a different method to replace their hogs?

Kris,
Haven't been here in a couple days. Hadn't noticed that my avatar was missing. Need to check further, but I think I may have accidently deleted it from the site where it was residing. Will check later. Off to another class now! Thinking.gif
