Title: My new retirement business card
Post by: Texas Mac Man on May 12, 2009, 08:02:10 PM
Years ago a retired man gave me his retirement business card. Because it was unique, I saved it for a long time, but I've not been able to find it. I thought I would make, from memory, a similar card.

I did a Google search and found some possible good ideas for things to put on the card. The results are shown below for the front and rear of my card.

I plan to print the cards using the free Avery software and Avery card stock. Before I print, I thought I would get your review and opinions. Maybe I could improve or add to what's printed on the back of the cards.

We both know that the second is wishful thinking. That leaves the first. Retirement is a loss, I think, if one does not keep busy. Never retire is my philosophy. As long as I can get prescription glasses that allow me to see critical focus through a lens I will never retire.

On the other hand, Take care and use the first one. Top.

My nickles worth given coming inflation.

Love the idea of a retirement business card. biggrin.gif Personally, I think retirement is pretty grand. No more getting up with the chickens unless we want to. Our "jobs" are now ones we choose through volunteering. Have to say, there are times when retired life is stressful and worrisome -- but that's true whether one is retired or not. So I like your card.

I think this card should reflect you, and I'd only suggest 2 things.

1. The colored background on the front. It's an odd color to my eyes, plus you'll be using a lot of ink printing the cards.
2. I abhor comic sans, and would *beg* you to replace it; but my hatred of this font is a real thing with me. wink.gif

Oh, and for safety sake .... why not pop your graphic into photoshop or something and blur that personal info on the front of the card while you have it up here?

Kimmer - I think you need to read this WSJ piece in order to properly appreciate COMIC SANS:

Edited to add:

There are bad types and good types, and the whole science and art of typography begins after the first category has been set aside.

I still get up between 5:00AM & 5:30AM. I have so many volunteer jobs - work one day a week at a food bank, on the staff of a single parent support group, habbitat for humanity, handyman, on the planning committee for 2 charity golf tournaments - that it seems that I work 40 hours per week.

The card is meant to be informative, but also humorous. Hence, the job title below my name & the info on the rear. I was not a professor. I was an engineer.

Re: Colored background - I did a search on Google images using the word "hammock" and found the graphic I used. Actually found three identical images, but with backgrounds of "orange" (the one I chose), lime green & pink. I chose orange because it's the closest color to a sandy beach.

Re: Comic sans font - Since the card is somewhat humorous, what better font to use than a comic font.

Volunteer jobs - that's what I like about being retired. So you get up early by choice. I enjoy sleeping in until 7AM. biggrin.gif

Then I think you've met your goal; and I understand now about about the colored background. Sounds like your happy with your choice, so I say go for it.

Since this is a family board I can't really reply ... but someone should take that font to the outer forty and let it get trampled by a herd of elk and be lost to the world. laugh.gif

I found my grand-father's calling card, like they would leave at when calling on a person who was out.  It was so elegant and simple.  I will search it out.

I would go for simple elegance rather than comedy, but that is just me.

Black on white.  A smart font with a hint of a joke, makes it more P G Wodehouse and less "got this graphic off the internet" look!

Go for it - I like it just the way it is, and I love Comic Sans - use it often.  cheer.gif

Just make sure that every beginning tag has an ending tag to go with it.

[ quote name='Texas Mac Man' date='May 14 2009, 01:51 AM' post='162384']
[
[ code]The card is meant to be informative, but also humorous. Hence, the job title below my name & the info on the rear. I was not a professor. I was an engineer.[/code ]

Change the above to what's below (only remove the spaces in between the brackets and the word:

[ quote name='Texas Mac Man' date='May 14 2009, 01:51 AM' post='162384']
The card is meant to be informative, but also humorous. Hence, the job title below my name & the info on the rear. I was not a professor. I was an engineer.[ /quote]

and it will look like this:

I recommend getting one of the many 'typing macro' tools. You create a bit of text you'd like to have inserted when you are writing, like the beginning and ending 'tags' for the forum 'quote' commands ( "quote" & "/quote" each enclosed by "[" & "]"). Then, in the 'macro app, assign a unique sequence of letters that will 'trigger the app to insert that text. I have ones set up to insert...
CODE
[quote][/quote], [color=green][b]name[/b][/color], <[url=TheURL][color=red][b]linkText[/b][/color][/url]>, and several others, some even for certain smilies
Then, when I want to insert a link to something, I just type the unique 'code' and the little app insert that last bit of text above and continue writing the sentence to explain whatever the subject is. Since I've already copied (to the clipboard, 'command-c') the actual URL from the site's window and I have some text in that sentence that I can use for the link text, all I need to do is double click the "TheURL" part and press command-v to insert the URL. Then, I'll select the pieces of text in the sentence, usually the words right after the link stuff, command-x, double-click the "linkText" part and do another command-v. Sounds time consuming, but it's really not after a few uses and it can all be done in the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the thread window. No need to make the browser load another page or display the posts in a different manner. I use Typinator, but there are several others. THese apps really make typing easier for people like me who have only two or three fingers that have any typing "skills!" blush-anim-cl.gif

BTW, the forum software prevents you displaying any tags in a 'normal' message, you'll need to wrap any examples in the "code" tags, which prevents the software from parsing them text into what it thinks it should look like. The other most often mistake is to use more than one tag, like bold and italic but insert the 'closing' tags in the wrong order. The tags need to be "nested," or 'closed in reverse order of how they were entered. That doesn't mean all the tags have to be together, at the beginning or the end. You can make an entire sentence bold but have only a couple of words italicized, for example. Just remember to close the tags in the proper places.

The more you try/use the 'code' the faster you'll learn them. Their basically a subset of the standard html tags, but marked with square brackets instead of "<" & ">". smile.gif

Cool cards, I would go with the first one.
Actually our Photoshop class got a bit OT, and I made some Photo-cards.
Since I am long retired too, and it seems that when we are on trips or almost anywhere, someone wants to get in touch at a later date, and nobody has pen or paper.
So one of my classmates said, just make a business card size and put your contact info on it and some pictures. And since people always remember the dog, more than the people's names, I made several.

This one my classmates like the best,,,,,,,Sorry about the green brush, but they said to block out address and phone if the picture is accessable on the web, and not on the password protected classroom site.
What do you all think?  I think its a bit hard to read, so I am working on variations.

We too get up at 5 every morning, we love the dawn.  We have a furry alarm clock that does not buzz, it LICKS.
Jane

add/edit, I just realized that its almost square, not the proper business card format. I probably should change it
