Title: Failed Fan, Hot Quicksilver

The CPU fan in my 733mhz G4QS failed. I'm now trying to find a replacement, Akasa and Thermaltake make PC case fans of the same dimensions. I was perhaps hoping someone might know, or be able to point me in the direction of the original Apple fan specifications, such as did it have a thermal sensor or not?

The readily available Apple specs don't have the info you need. However, you can get the correct replacement part, which I suspect does not have a sensor from the looks of it, from welovemacs.com:

There are two fans in the Quicksilver - the big black one, and the smaller processor fan.

Hope that helps. Needless to say - run that G4 as little as possible if at all. It can get pretty hot pretty fast.

A few more hours (sigh) of hard searching eventually led to the NMB website, which contained all the specifications for the Minebea brand fans, everything from airflow to noise levels. It is even possible to replace the standard 2410ml-04w-b47 with a higher air flow 2410ml-04w-b60 and still be with in the PSU load.

Is that the model of fan you have in your Quicksilver currently?

If you want to get the one with the higher air flow, it's available for $11.02 from newark.com:

The Panaflo fans mentioned were manufactured by Panasonic, who are no longer in that business, but have instead formed a joint partnership with...Minebea. http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/applia...e_fans_home.htm

I don't know why there is a different site than the Minebea one, but the NMB site looks easier to navigate:

Good to know for US residents who might need replacement fans. Found the Canadian distributors - all sell in lots of 180! And then found it here:

I did come across the Newark site but as I'm in the UK they charge a $25 (£15) handling fee for international orders under $100.
I read alot of articles on xlr8yourmac but their mainly to do with fan noise, something I simply cured by using anti-vibration matting, I tend to find G4s and also G3 B&Ws vibrate in their metal case.
So all I need to do is find a UK distributor of NMB fans.

Also the current model of CPU fan in my QS is 2410ml-04w-b47.

Oops - missed that "From Torbay, Devon" in your info! I'm in Canada, so face similar issues and frustrations (though I would hope that access to the EU market online might help somewhat). The fact that I lived in the US for 16 years and moved back here 2 years ago just increases that frustration for me, because I got very used to what was available there!

Surely that cost could be reduced for private shipping. Of course, express shipping would be more expensive. Never used that and I'm not sure that $25 would cover that mode, either. But 'snail' mail should be more like half that cost, especially for something with practically no weight! I'll see what I can find out...

Meanwhile follow Paddy's advice and don't run the machine any more than necessary. Or put it in a refrigerator, with the keyboard and monitor outside, of course... rolleyes.gif

I'm running the G4 AGP Graphics at the moment and just completely taken the G4QS out of service. I'll ring Minebea Co. Ltd. which is their UK branch and ask for a UK distributor because they don't list any on their UK site.

Small packet from Canada is about $15 (I guessed at the weight). The small flat-rate box from the US, which would be perfect, is $12.95. Of course, that doesn't include any shipping from the US/Canadian distributor, so not sure how much cheaper it would actually be in the end! Hope there is a UK distributor. smile.gif

Just an update, Newark do have a UK site, it's called Farnell, not obvious in anyway. The UK site is more expensive, so much so, that if you ordered more than a few items it would be cheaper to pay the $25 handling fee. However due to another event I have decided to break up the G4 QS for parts, sad I know, but it will be used to upgrade and extend the life of others.
