Title: Amazing picture, gives me the woolies!

One of my Photoshop classmates used this photo in some of her work, didnt say where she got it.
Every time I look at it, I get the goose pimples, just imagine coming up to it in a boat!
See the barrier of buoys in the left upper background, the thing must be big, and they want to keep people out of it.
Next question, where does the water go?
Whew, anyone ever seen anything like this thing?

What isn't shown is the dam and power plant below this photo.
This is an intake for a power plant turbine, could be at any power generating plant with a reservoir.  Intakes like this are also used for maintaining the level of the reservoir/lake/river..

Not sure how this was taken.... but DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME or anywhere for that matter..... only very small chunks come out the other end.

If this is real and not shopped shouldn't the structure have a barrier "directly" around it?

OH! OH! OH! I've seen this! I've been there! I lived near there! I even have pics that we took that are very similar to the one your classmate used.

That is the Glory Hole on Lake Berryessa in Napa County, California. It's part of the Monticello Dam. We've fished on this lake - good times. Folks swim, water ski, boat, fish and generally have a grand time. It's packed come the summer heat. The water from the dam feeds into Putah Creek - a great fly fishing creek; plus there are some "rapids" and folks like to raft down them.

Wow, thank you all for the links, must be something amazing to see something up close like that stuff. We have seen the Niagara one. But one of the most scary things we saw was a HUGE sink hole in the forest on Andros Island. We came across it and it was a perfect circle, and very deep and blue.  Not as spectacular as the one in Belize, but shocking, as it was in the woods.
We climbed down a rope ladder that some local kids had made and swam in it, it was brackish, and really neat but wooley, made me have more goose pimples, as it was deep and crystal clear.
When we came out, were riding borrowed bicycles, we saw some really ugly turkey vultures up close.  Were they waiting for us if we couldn't get out?
Fun stuff.

Now that is a picture!
Though it doesnt look eeeeerrrrrrieeee without the water sucking down into the hole.
Unless you climb up the edge and look down into it!

The water only goes down the hole in the winter, when the rain is sufficient. The lake provides water for several towns in the area (our old town included). The pic SB posted would have likely been taken in the summer, when the temps are a balmy 110 and everyone is watering their lawns and drawing down the lake.

It would be a bit cold in the winter, but not in the summer or fall.

BTW, most of the resorts are now closed on this lake, so not sure how much of anything is going on there. sad.gif

I've seen it in nearly this condition, not as low. I've never seen it sucking water...yet...but winter is reserved for warmer climates so I'm unlikely to visit there during the winter months unless I fly over.

Hey, SB -- when were you in that area? If you'd called, we would have treated you to dinner.

After living in that area for over 30 years, we saw the lake lower several times -- and watched as our yards and trees and everything green died. sad.gif

Kim,

I used to live in old Sacramento and then North Highlands when I worked at Beale AFB near Marysville. I've been back in the region for weddings and Vegas, and a drive to the coast in rental cars.

We used to ride our motorcycles out to the reservoir on weekends, or up to Tahoe, the Bay or points unknown. I've always had a thing for following rivers across the country so I had a knack for ending up at lakes or the sea. ;-)

I know the broader area pretty well, spent a lot of time building in Sun River http://www.sunriver-resort.com/ and climbing Mt. Bachelor, Hood & Shasta. We were going to retire in Lone Pine Ca. and still may go back for a fresh look.
I luv Mt. Whitney and the lakes, rivers and clean environment, with its small population and old country charm. wink.gif
