Title: What are you listening to? (Autumn segment)
Post by: Highmac on November 05, 2009, 05:40:53 AM
Kingston Trio video found on YouTube - dunno why, but this comment made me think of Kimmer.....
QUOTE
John tells a story of... an early morning driver on an LA freeway stopping to pick up a beautiful hitchiker. "Where you going?" "Oregon, mister where you going?" "Well, hell I was going out to get cigarettes but I guess I can go to Oregon." And with that they break into "July You're a Woman." I miss him. RIP big guy.
Sadly, while the poster kept two very good (clean) jokes, he cut the song (Where Have All the Flowers Gone) short!

iTunes mix with Blues Traveler, The Cowboy Junkies, and Dire Straits! I'm not streaming these days at work because it loads the internet too much and they need all the bandwidth they can get for "no-child-left-behind" testing.

The Byrds, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint, Emmylou Harris, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Little Feat, The Mavericks, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Earle - all on one file - on shuffle! Brilliant.
You can see a theme here!

Wow. I've never heard them sing July You're a Woman....
Can't find the Kingstons singing it, but have found the John Stewart solo version, and very pleasant it is too! Hope you enjoy it.
For Bob: Bob Shane doing Scotch and Soda way back when we were all a little bit younger.... But I can't find the Kingstons doing Green Onions One of our BBC channels is showing excerpts tonight from the Cambridge Folk Festival, featuring Booker T Jones and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Guess he decided MGs were not flashy enough

Ohhh, thanks Neil! I'll have to check Amazon for the John Stewart version. Nice song.

According to my sources (oh, all right... Wikipedia and Google!) Stewart replaced the departing Dave Guard and apparently was the writer of July... which is a track on his California Bloodlines album.
I've just been listening to Joan Armatrading talking to some of her favourite guitarists - including Bert Jansch, Mark Knopfler, John Williams and Bonnie Raitt, in separate programmes - about their choices of instrument and their techniques. Fascinating even if I didn't understand the technical stuff

Recently I've become obsessed with Pink Martini, a mini-orchestra out of Portland, Oregon. They update vintage sounds from all kinds of sources, performing in English, French, Japanese, Italian, Czech and, well you get the idea. With a lead singer who can sound like Norah Jones or Sarah Vaughn.
My all time, all time, all time FAVORITE song.... "Scotch & Soda".... Along with "Green Onions"....

I saw the Kingston trio on stage in the 60"s - they put on a great show, and their wonderful songs. Besides "Scotch and Soda"I also like "Where Have all the Flowers Gone".

At 65 yrs. of age, I have to admit that I've become somewhat of a "Scrooge", when it comes to Christmas music; I mean, really, how many times can you listen to "Jingle Bells" or "Santa Clause is coming to town" before you become unhinged? So, I was completely flabbergasted at myself, when I found myself buying Tori Amos's "Midwinter Graces". It is an astoundingly gorgeous compilation of Christmas ("Holiday" for the PC crowd!) songs with brilliant instrumentation and orchestration. Tori's keyboard ability is amazing, as is the sound of her Bosendorfer 11' grand with an extra octave in the bass. . . She does an amazing job of creating a magical, musical environment for the season. Warning: right smack in the middle of this production, for some odd reason, she dropped in a big band arrangement of a "torch song"; kind of like something that you'd expect off a Sinatra disc. It's very well done, but doesn't seem to "fit" with the rest of the disc, however, it may be one of the 2 "bonus" cuts that you get with the Border's edition. Happy listening, y'll!

Amazon seems to have changed its sampler system since the last time I visited. Used to play as soon as you clicked on the title - now it takes you to a separate page just for that title and you need to click Preview.

I'm listening to this guy Patrick Costello from Crisfield (Maryland?) who is in love with his cigarbox banjo:
