Title: UPDATED: Fixed problem with MAIL
Post by: kimmer on March 26, 2010, 12:33:15 PM
Problem is in post 17.

Okay ...Now I need to back up my present drive. Suggestions? And can I make it bootable? And please treat me like a 5-year old and give directions because I have not used backup software in years.

I think from what I've read in old threads here (yes, I dusted several of them off) I should do an archive and install, not an update. Will I lose anything if I do that?

Wow - good thing Sneakers is gonna be gone this evening and all day tomorrow. I may need all that time to myself to get through this.

I feel like a kid with a new toy. smile.gif

Sorry the Polar bear plunge was held here on New Years day, and the one in Minneapolis was held 3 weeks ago.  Guess you will have to wait until next year. toothgrin.gif

Good luck  I am sure you will get all the answers real quick.  It should be a piece of cake

I use SuperDuper for making complete, bootable backups to a different drive. (An alternative to SD is Carbon Copy Cloner.) SD's interface is very user-friendly so you should have no problems. After cloning with SD, boot from the clone to test it out. In case you don't know how:  Restart while pressing and holding Option. Release the key when you see a choice of startup disks, select the clone and then press Return. The first start from a newly cloned drive takes longer than subsequent starts so be patient. When you are satisfied that the clone is working, reboot normally.

I have always used the Upgrade method to advance to the next OS and it has never failed me. I always take the precaution of rebuilding the directory with Disk Warrior beforehand (and it would be a good idea to do that before cloning with SD so that you don't copy bad data). If you don't have DW, TechTool Pro or Drive Genius are good alternatives. Use Disk Utility's Repair Disk if you don't have the other apps (read Mac OS X - Using Disk Utility to Repair a Disk if you don't remember how to do this).

Since you have a complete copy of the original drive, you can always clone back from it in case something goes wrong.

Good advice all around....

Also know that the first backup to your ext. via SD! will take some time.... but that subsequent ones will complete MUCH faster..

Good luck, and know that you have many friends with many answers on TS...  (hopefully the same answer for the same question!!)

LOL @ Daryl! I could probably wait another year. laugh.gif

Bob K. - thanks for the heads up. I'll let it start and then go do something else.

Jon, thanks for the excellent tips. Don't have DW for this iMac, so I'll boot and run DU and then I clone with SD (which I picked up in a bundle a while back so that was easy to install.)

Kimmer,

it makes no sense to me to jump to 10.5. IMHO, you would be better off to jump to Snow Leopard IF you have an install disk because of improvements available in Snow leopard that are not available in Leopard. If you do stay with 10.5,  before you have installed the version you have,  download from apple.com the latest COMBO updater. Once you have upgraded, immediately run the Combo Updater that installs all upgrades up to and including the latest one. In any OS installation, make sure you select Archive & Install so as to preserve  anything you will need from 10.4.11.

Thanks, Tom. I don't own 10.6 and I do own 10.5 -- so that's where I'll go. wink.gif

Backup is done. I'll have questions on that later. I'll go look for the upgrade stuff and tomorrow I'll upgrade the OS.

Just a thought:  Instead of using the Upgrade method, you could clone the original drive, erase the original and install Leopard from scratch. The first time that you boot from Leopard, Migration Assistant automatically launches. Follow the prompts to import everything from the clone. This takes much more time than the Upgrade option but potentially gives you a cleaner system. MA will give you an estimate of the time remaining but you should ignore it. Assume that it will take several hours even if it says that only a few minutes more are required (this happened to me). Go away for awhile and enjoy a cuppa Joe or other beverage of your choice and read War And Peace a few times while you wait.

BTW, I agree with Mama Moose about Snow Leopard. It's only $29 from Apple, a bit less at Amazon.

All done. I let it run while I slept. tongue.gif

I'm passing on 10.6 (for now). I haven't yet seen anything about it that would get me to spend an additional $29 -- especially since I'm just now breaking in 10.5. Being married to a Scotsman has worn off on me. laugh.gif

Now ... I don't understand Quick Look. I added the icon to my window toolbar and can use it from there, but it's supposed to work in Mail and I can't figure out how. I don't see a QL icon that I can add to the toolbar in Mail, and pressing the spacebar just moves me down through the email.

Quick Look also works in the Mail and iChat applications in Mac OS X. Say you receive a message with a bunch of attachments. Instead of downloading and opening each one, you can use Quick Look to see them with a click.

I'm just now exploring a load of other stuff, but first I need to go fold a newsletter and then stuff, label and stamp 191 envelopes.

You don't need no stikin' icon for Quick Look! rant.gif

The only time I specifically call on it is when in Finder (99% of the time I have a Finder window open). Just select a document/zipped file and press the space bar. Wah-lah! There's a view of what's in the document. QL is built into the OS, but I've never seen nor tried to call on it, specifically, when in any other app. Nor do I even know what its icon looks like! Didn't even know it had one! Where do you see it? dntknw.gif

If your talking frugality, SL is a much better bargain than Leopard! I was thinking you didn't even have an Intel Mac and that was why you weren't going on to SL. I certainly agree with mama that you're kinda spinning your "learning wheels" by staying in plain Leopard. Yes, but I already own 10.5. I don't own 10.6. Plus 10.6 would require me to update several pieces of software, and some I'd lose. I'm not interested. I may be spinning my learning wheels, but I'm happy with the direction they are spinning.

There are multiple threads here about Time Machine. It automatically backs up whatever you tell it to (usually your Home Folder, Documents, at least) every 60 minutes. The first back up will take quite some time as it will basically make a copy of every thing you've asked it to back up. From then on, all it will back up are new files and files that have changed. The difference is, you will actually have multiple back ups of any file that changes.SuperDuper makes one back up a day (depending on how you set it up, of course). That is fine, as long as the last copy of every document is uncorrupted. If it is corrupted when SD backs it up, that may be the only back up of it you have, although I think SD keeps as many daily backups as you want. Also, if you create a document and accidentally delete it and empty the trash before SD makes its back up, you'll not get that document backed up at all. As long as that document resided on your drive for no more than 60 minutes, Time Machine will have backed it up (assuming it is in any folder/directory you've selected to back up).Frankly, I have never attempted to recover a file from a SD back up. So, I can't really compare it to Time Machine's method. With TM, you simply enter "the way back machine" and you'll see a 'stack' of Finder windows just like the one you last had open (generally I have one open showing the specific folder that I thought the file should have been in). They will be 'stacked' in chronological order, the latest in the front and going back as far as you have room for on the back up drive/partition. On the right edge of the screen is a scale showing the current date on the bottom and the earliest backed up data at the top. You simply click on the marker for whatever date/time you want and the Finder windows will magically slide back to that date/time and show what's in the Finder/folder previously selected.Of course, these Finder windows work just like they do in the current time period. If you don't see the document you want, you can still navigate all around the drive in that window. This screen is very intuitive once you realize what it's showing you. When you (hopefully) find the document you lost or corrupted, it should be highlighted and ready for your next command. If you had to search through some folders/directories, you'll probably need to click/select the document. You can now restore it to your current environment by clicking the "Restore" button on the extreme, right-hand, lower part of the screen. The lower edge of your screen will have that three-part bar that I just mentioned above. As I said, the right-hand part is a "Restore" button. The left-hand part is an equal sized "Cancel" button. The center part is a huge "Today" button which will bring the current view of the Finder window back in view. Be extremely careful clicking that window! Be sure you are seated and have both feet on the floor! It may be best to be leaning against the chairs back, also. This is because of the possible whip lash caused by speeding back from "way back" to the present day/time! :tease:Most here highly recommend both SD and TM usage. I think retrieving a specific file is easier from TM and the chances of it being there are possibly higher, if the file has been erased, especially before SD got the chance to do its thing. Obviously, these back ups should not be on your boot drive! Which brings up the other major difference between SD and TM. SD can (and I think most people use it this way) make a bootable back up. TM does not do that, but it can be used to restore every thing you've backed up on it, including the whole OS, if you told it to keep that backed up. I don't use it that way, myself. Most would recommend keeping the two back ups on separate drives. I don't go that far, using the same, external drive for both methods. I even go so far as to use a partition of that drive for the TM back up. Apple would like and some people staunchly say you must use a completely separate and totally dedicated drive for TM. This theory probably comes from the fact that TM will continue making back up copies until it runs out of room. But it doesn't crash when that happens! nono.gif It simply starts removing/erasing the oldest back ups until it has the needed room for the new one. There are more details about TM, but if you've made it this far, you and I both need a break! tease.gif Hopefully, you already know more about SD than I do, anyway. blush-anim-cl.gif

Oh yeah, that thing. I never saw the point of adding something that required moving the mouse and then another step to click it when it already had a simple keyboard shortcut. With a document selected, simply press the space bar and there's your Quick Look. Press it again and it disappears. Or, use the arrow keys to see the next document down/up/sideways/etc. Makes looking at a bunch (sorry for the technical term!) of images very quick. Thanks for the info on Time Machine. I've been researching it and, likes others here, I'll probably partition my external drive and keep one for SD and one for TM.

I've decided that I'm not nuts about "Spaces", but I'm undecided on Exposé (which I can't seem to get to work when FF is open). I think I like the new design of the dock and the way it "fans" things out. In fact, I made some new folders with aliases and dumped a bunch of stuff from the dock.

Now -- one BIG problem. Mail did not update correctly and I lost mail. sad.gif Unfortunately it's all my software registrations and such, so I need to get it back. I'm hoping against hope that everything is on the external in the SD backup; but how do I get it into my current Apple Mail?
Fixed. See post 19.

The Mail problem: Seems like the last time someone "lost" mail it was resolved with a simple .plist removal. But you might want to search here for that, anyway.

The actual location of your downloaded mail may be different in Tiger and Leopard, so it might be worth looking around for the folders, also. Mine are at: ~/Library/Mail/. Once there, you'll find several of .plists. Of course, the main /plist would be in the normal Preferences folder.

Hopefully, in the path I described above, you will also find all your mailboxes (actually .mbox files [actually a type of folder]). Inside those will be "Messages" folders containing the actual messages (1234.emix files [seemingly randomly numbered rather than with real names!]). Simply double-clicking those .emix files will cause Mail to open them. The problem being how to figure out which of those computer identified names relate to human time! Perhaps their Created/Modified might be of some help. rolleyes.gif dntknw.gif

I've never been a big user of Exposé, although I have to use it on Judy's MBP because that screen is smaller and she usually has about 15 dozen windows open at the same time! eek2.gif Actually, I exaggerate, there are probably only ten dozen open at a time, while having at least nine apps running simultaneously, of course. wallbash.gif

Spaces I've never needed. With a 27" monitor and usually less than six apps open at a time, the old cammnd-tab lets me get to any of them with a few key taps. dntknw.gif When I did try Spaces, I tended to always end up with almost the same apps in every 'space!' What's the point?! dntknw.gif I'm sure power users find it useful. smile.gif

I couldn't find a plist that related to the missing boxes. I tired renaming the boxes and that didn't work. Double clicking on them made them show up and POFF all gone from the Mail window, but they were still there in my ~/Library/Mail/ folder. Finally I physically tossed them and drug fresh copies from the backup. So far all is working.

Thanks for the help.

Could have been a corrupted file, any one of them. I have an "info.plist" inside every main level mailbox.mbox. However, there is not an info.plist for any sub-folder of any of those mailboxes. Inside each main level mailbox.mbox is also a "Messages" folder. Inside that (plain) folder are the five digit .emix files, the actual messages. Of course, if Mail is not open, it should also open when that message does. I assume that's what you did, as double-clicking an mbox folder simply opens the folder, at least the way I have my system set up.

Whatever you dumped/restored, had everything in order and the problem is solved: Always have a good back up, in at least two different versions and places. salute.gif

But it's good to remember that when mailboxes/messages "disappear" they are almost always still right where they are supposed to be. smile.gif

Yes, I was double-clicking the .emix files, and there wasn't a plist file to be found. So I'm guessing this particular mailbox was totally corrupted in the upgrade. It's working now. smile.gif
