Title: Wireless Up And Running
Post by: sluggo on February 19, 2003, 11:50:00 PM
Hello everyone. The Powerbook 233 arrived today and I'm typing this from my kitchen right now via wireless.
I wound up using a Farallon Wavelan PC card from Small Dog and a D-Link DWL 900AP base station friom ebay. The card shipped with no drivers, but that was noted in the product info from Small Dog. However, they did provide me with suggestions on what to use. I downloaded Apple's Airport 2.0.4 driver for OS 9.2 and everything went smoothly right from the start. Just had to adjust the TCP/IP control panel and we were good to go.
Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions while I was shopping for gear and another thanks to the folks at Small Dog. I've done business with them several times before and it looks like I'll continue to do so.

OK, next question: I think I know the answer, but some TS opinions are always in order.
Do I dare try Jag on this thing? It's only a 233 with 128 MB RAM and a 2 gig HD. Sounds a little under powered for Jag to me.

The default Mac OS X instalaltion takes about 2 gig. 128 MB and 233 MHz is too little.

Todd, I guess you could do Jaguar on it---if you only intend to use the machine to play solitaire.      In my not so vast experience with OSX, those numbers seem a bit "tight" for OSX. In this case, I don't even think your mileage would vary.

So, how the dogs doing?      I see you added a new picture of them! They look great!

Thanks Rob and Vijay. Your answers were just as I suspected. I'll be content with 9.2. This one's only a toy and I don't foresee any major upgrades unless something comes along dirt cheap.
That pic was taken last summer, Rob. I've since bought another truck. Wish that weather would return, getting a little itchy to bust out the Harley!
