Title: Problem using Toast light with System X
Post by: ilw-00 on June 15, 2003, 04:45:21 PM
I use a G4 laptop which can boot in system 9.2.2 or 10.2.  When I boot with system X even with system 9 open(it opens automatically), when I open Toast light 5.2 it states that no recorder is available.  I then change my start up to system 9 reboot with 9 alone and there is no problem.  The recorder is found and I can use Toast light without any problems.  Any suggestions?  Thank you. ilw-00

Do you have Toast lite installed in the "9" boot?
Not sure what you mean "it opens automatically" also? Are you saying classic opens?

Hi what I meant was whenever I turn on the computer system  X boots and system 9 automatically opens as well. Toast doesn't open automatically. ilw-00

On the system 9 starting when booting into X.
Go to system preference [in X] >> Classic. See what it says in there.

I was just going to ask a similar question....I have an external fire wire burner with Toast Lite and it gives me the message that no recorder is found....if I try to drag something from the desk top to the CD I get some other message, I don't remember the exact wording, to the effect that it can't be added.....this is using OS X. I also tried burning from iPhoto and that didn't work either......  wallbash.gif trish

ilw-00> I think you're saying you have Classic launch on Startup. smile.gif

If you don't want it to launch until you need it.

Uncheck that option in System Preferences > Classic.

It is not surprising that some Hardware will work under OS 9,

but not work running under Classic in OS X.

You can probably just keep doing what you're doing.

Buy a new Burner or buy a newer version of Toast.

Trish. Which Burner? smile.gif

Trish. Some more information please. smile.gif

What is the exact name of your Burner?

A couple of that brand are listed as having OS X support.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/storage.html

Others may be made to work or not.

Possibly by "Flashing" the drive. Which can be risky.

olw-00.

Once you see what is going on the Classic pane [within the system preference] for the issue of why OS9xx automatically 'opens' when booting up X [as I stated above],try this with toast.

I'm assuming the toast in question resides in OS 9xx.
Also: I'm not sure if this will work with the toast "lite" version.

Create an alias of the app toast in 9. Drag that alias over to your desktop in X.
Fire up that alias in X. If you have the toast window up and ready to rock in X,then highlight the alias to "Show Original" ... I do this with my mouse drop down menu. You might have to go up to the finder menu somewhere.
Then once the Original is located by this means, highlight the Original for "get info".
If the info says it IS the one in OS9xx, you're in business.
You should be able to use the alias in X unless the Toast prefs/exts say other wise.

Hi,
Thank you for the advice. I boot in classic whenever I boot in X as I still use Word 2001 and would rather wait when I am starting my computer rather than later.  Toast light resides in the application folder in X.  The burner I use is the cd drive which is part of my G4 laptop.  The reason I use Toast lite is that it came with a burner I bought for my G3 and I am under the impression that with the G4 you can not just burn a session witth the software that comes with the computer.  Is this so? ilw-00

Well ok then. So toast is in X and you prefer to open classic.

Curiosity got the better of me so I did some goofin around.
I dragged an alias over from my toast in 9 and did the info bit.
Then I did the info from the original to see where it actually was hanging its hat.

Didn't burn a cdr or anything though.

Hi Bill,
Is there any reason not to boot 9.2 whenever I boot 10.2?  What did you learn from your experiment? I see where it is but what does it mean? ilw-00

There's no real reason not to launch Classic on Startup. smile.gif

Trish. I'm having a hard time finding that model.

Is there anything besides Buslink on the Drive?

Or on the Box it came in?

From the FAQ CDRW section.

"Check the serial number on the drive, if it begins with LTR it's a Liteon drive, not an AOpen."

"Is there any reason not to boot 9.2 whenever I boot 10.2?"
Probably just boils down to personal preference.
I myself have classic turned off on startup from X.
If I need something done in classic,I usually by pass Classic and go straight to my OS 9.2.2. partition by rebooting.

"What did you learn from your experiment?"
Other than having too much time on my hands,I just burnt a 'test cdr' going that route and it came out ok.
Not to sure what prefs etc etc were working along with this toast from OS 9 because I also have a toast in X. Might very well of pulled up the toast app in 9 but all the little helpers could of came from X.?.

"I see where it is but what does it mean?"
If in deed the 9 toast is working solo in X,what in blazes do I have one in X for?
I read somewhere way back where Krissel stated that one can put apps in another partition and then swing an alias at X. Hmmm

That is what I do with my 9 programs/apps. Most are in my apps partition aiming at my 9 partition.
Might just do some re-thinking if I find out that toast in 9 was going solo.

Actually .... too much time on my hands hits the nail more accurate. <gr>

Trish. Any luck? smile.gif

You might just want to replace it and sell that one.

Those are some cheap Burners.

http://dealnews.com/articles/52759.html

You can get one that will work.

Lite-On 52x/24x/52x EIDE for $43

http://dealmac.com/articles/52172.html

Probably find slower and cheaper. smile.gif

Kelly, thanks for checking. I haven't played with the burner since I last posted.....I know I have burned pix with it (without much trouble) but this last time it just wouldn't do it....Me thinks "operator error."  But really, how difficult could it be?.... biggrin.gif ...trish
