Title: Permission???

I created a file in TextEdit with text and audio files. I changed a few things in the file and when I try to save and close the file it tells me I can't save it because I don't have the proper permission. Then it tells me to select the file and then Get Info. Then it doesn't say what to do after that. I've tried unlocking the Get Info, but that does nothing.

How do I get this corrected?

Let's see if you're doing this right:

1. Select the file and then do a Get Info.
2. In the Get Info window, go to Sharing and Permissions. If necessary, click the disclosure triangle to show all the options.
3. Unlock the file by clicking the padlock icon at the bottom of the Get Info window. Enter your administrator password when prompted to authenticate.
4. Under Name, go to your account and change Privilege to Read & Write by clicking the double arrow. If your account is not listed, click + and add it. Then, assign Read & Write privileges.

Thanks, but that didn't work. For one thing, my account already had Read & Write privleges.

Try repairing permissions in Disk Utility. It's possible that something is awry. If that doesn't work, close TextEdit and then dump its .plist file (User->Library->Preferences->com.apple.textedit.plist)

If neither of those things fix it, then have a look at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10674901 (might be related)

What EXACTLY is the error message you get when you try to save? And is it just this file, or any file in TextEdit? (new or existing?)

It is not just a problem with this file.

I have a program called WireTap Studio that records music. I have registered it and everything is set to start using it, but when I hit the record button I get the following error message: Unexpected error:  1886547263.

I have contacted the company and their tech person tried everything he could come up with without success. He finally suggested I repair permissions. I did with Disk Utilities, Onyx and Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner. No change. Then I signed in as a guest user. I opened WireTap Studio and hit record it worked like it should. Still does not work when I sign in normally.

Any other ideas?

Wire Tap problems:BTW, all third-party permissions 'fixers' use the same OS built-in function as Disk Utility, so it's not really doing anything to use more than one app, except getting to watch more progress bars! wink.gif However, it is extremely important to use the correct version that is up-to-date for your OS.

Basically, the permissions 'fixer' will check files in the BOOTVOLUME/Library/Receipts/boms directory. In that folder is a list of any app installed with the Apple installer method. Those .bom files contain the preferred permissions settings for those type apps and all of their files/resources/etc. If Wire Tap Studio was a simple 'drag-n-drop' installation, it will not have a .bom file, nor will any other installed files that use that method.

I have 2 - Main and guest
I uninstalled
WireTap Uninstaller
I didn't know about the permissions "fixers", but your comment makes sense.

I have done everything you have suggested, but nothing has worked.  

Anyone else have a suggestion?

Who's owns the file you're trying to write to?
What group permissions does the file have?

Maybe I missed whether you said that or not.....

Does Ambrosia have a user forum for WireTap? That is sometimes a better place to check than the developer!

I want to be sure of two things; all traces of the app are gone and that you have a stable, clean account to use.Now, you can return to the Ambrosia site and download a new copy of the app. Then, log out of your normal account and log into the new Administrator accounts and install WireTap Studio for all users (if that option is available). If things run OK now, you have some third-party or even System pieces that are corrupted in your main account. If things still don't operate correctly, I have no idea. sad.gif

Xairbusdriver,

I worked on your suggestions until I noticed a whole bunch of my folders in Library had a small red circle with a minus sign on them. When I clicked on the folder I couldn't open them because I didn't have permission.

At this point I decided to contact Apple. After going through several exercises it was determined I needed to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything. As yet, I haven't had time to do it, but the time is coming.

Erasing the drive will probably work, after all it wipes it clean. However, what say others about an Archive & Install? Even with that, I'd want to reinstall Wiretap and any other app that is causing trouble.

OTOH, the permissions preserved with an A & I may be the real problem, anyway. If so, you'll end up doing the Erase also. Obviuosly you'll want to have as many third-party apps backed up and have any disk they may need. And a good record of registration numbers for any Adobe and Microsoft apps. Most other developers will look at you as a customer and not as a potential thief, those they will usually have a way to verify you honesty while sending another or your old registration info. wink.gif

How about some help from some experienced re-installers around here.

I'm really the junior-partner hereabouts when compared to the knowledge base "maintained (cortically!)" by my colleagues here. But I would hazard one more suggestion, pragmatically based, on my own experience with AppleCare.

Before I'd take the advice to wipe a drive and restore/reinstall everything, I'd make another call to Apple, depending upon the luck of the draw, to determine if a second opinion substantiated the first one.

I have had several occasions with AppleCare over the years where that simple tactic saved me a lot of otherwise unnecessary work, where the first recommendation just didn't really "smell" quite right.

Also, I support ABD's hesitancy to use the "nuclear option", before working more around "the margin" via Archive and Install.

Gentlemen,

Thanks to both of you for your insight and help. I have done an Archive and Install with the same results.

I had thought of another call to Apple as my backup through Time Machine contains the same errors as the current problem hard drive.

Not too long ago I did a backup with SilverKeeper from LaCie. It is a good one with none of the permissions problems, however, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Suggestions?

As far as I can tell, the Archive and Install just copied your problems over.

Your primary account is seriously messed up, it would appear to me. At this point, I'd stop wasting time nibbling around the edges and just get on with the nuclear option - IF your Silverkeeper backup has all your documents and mail and everything else you wouldn't want to lose. Make sure you have all serial numbers for software/shareware. Is your Silverkeeper backup bootable? If so, follow the directions starting on page 40 of the Silverkeeper manual:

If it's not a bootable backup, you'll have to reinstall the OS, any applications requiring an installer and then you can copy applications not requiring installers (drag and drop type installs) and all of your documents, mail etc. However, since you state that the Silverkeeper backup has none of the problems of the main startup drive, then I think it's probable that your backup is bootable or how else could you have tested it?

I haven't used Silverkeeper, and it's unclear to me whether the cloning operation which is so straightforward in SuperDuper is available in Silverkeeper - it appears from the directions that you actually use Disk Utility with your Silverkeeper backup to restore. Either that, or their instructions just aren't clear. Or I still haven't had my morning tea. wink.gif

I always advise people to use SuperDuper - it's very clear what you're doing and how to do it. I've never even had to read the manual for it! Something to consider perhaps, if you find the restore operation at all complicated.

Thanks, again, guys.

That's why I keep coming back to this site for Mac advice. I suspect the minute the Apple guys hear anything smacking of "3rd Party" that's where the blame goes. Again, it will take me some free time to process all of this and work it out. I will get back to you with the results.
