Title: 1st question - Mail icons
Post by: Frances144 on September 21, 2010, 10:58:52 AM
Ok, first question.

How do you make the icons in Mail (such as Delete, Junk, etc) bigger.  They are tiny wee with small wee writing underneath barely readable.  I have managed to make the rest bigger, it is just the piddly little icons and descriptions underneath that are the problem.

Also how do you turn off, get rid of RSS - I am so not interested in that.

Actually everything is tiny wee.

How do you make the writing at the top bigger (the ones with the dropdown menus).

You neglected to say what version of MAIL you are using, but the following is correct — at least for v. 4.3
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
To get rid of RSS - go to Preferences > RSS > select a different RSS reader such as GRUML or NetNewsWire or Vienna.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
To change the icon size:

In  Mail   GO To  "VIEW" from the menu bar.  At the bottom — de-select "Small Mailbox Icons"

The View menu is very handy — spend some time familiarizing yourself with it.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I suggest reading the following — it is from the built-in "on-line" HELP menu at the top of your display when MAIL is the frontmost application.

I like the nifty icon for making your mailboxes visible or hidden from view. You can have an icon in the menu bar that toggles this.

The toolbar at the top of Mail windows provides quick access to frequently used commands. You can choose which items appear in these toolbars and how the items are arranged.

To customize the toolbar:

Open the Mail window whose toolbar you want to change.

Make the window (Message Viewer, New Message, or Note) whose toolbar you want to change the current window.

Choose View > Customize Toolbar, or Control-click the toolbar and choose Customize Toolbar from the shortcut menu.

Drag items from the toolbar palette into the toolbar, drag items out of the toolbar, or move items around in the toolbar.

When you drag an item to the toolbar, a green icon indicates you’re adding it.

When you drag an item from the toolbar, visual and sound effects indicate it has been removed. You can add the item again if you want.

To change how the icons are displayed in the toolbar, choose an option from the Show pop-up menu.

While working in a Mail window, you can quickly:

Rearrange a toolbar by holding down the Command key and dragging a toolbar item to a new location, or dragging it out of the toolbar to remove it.

Cycle through the different icon and label sizes by holding down the Command key and clicking the toolbar button in the upper-right corner of the window until you see the setting you like.

When you resize a window, toolbar icons can become hidden as the toolbar narrows. To set which items disappear last, Control-click the icons in the toolbar and choose Keep Item Visible.

Sorry, I am on Snow Leopard.

I have arranged my Toolbar - I just want the Toolbar to be bigger - bigger icons, bigger writing.  They are very small.  I did make the drawers bigger though!

I am nonplussed, having never seen a size change in the Mail menu bar; but ...

Have you tried adjusting your screen resolution ?

Oooh, just had a shot!

What size is the default for the 17" macbook Pro then?
It was set at 1920 x 1200 and everything is teensy tiny!

"Default" = "Native" resolution. And, I have to agree that it makes everything quite a bit smaller than the same resolution on a much larger monitor. I fine it difficult going from my 1920 x 1200 24" iMac to my wife's 1440 x 900 15" MBP. And, LCD monitors don't make changing the resolution all that nice, things can get very jagged and distorted very quickly. If I had to use my wife's machine, I would definitely buy another, external monitor, another keyboard and hide the MBP somewhere in a drawer! smile.gif

I just changed my screen resolution to 1920x1200 and yeah, everything -- those mail icons and all -- is tiny. Back to my choice (1344x840) and all is readable. Adjust up the screen resolution, Frances, and see if that works for you.

In MAIL go to preferences select the pane — “Fonts & Colors

Customize the fonts to your heart’s content !

Enjoy.

Flash, that only changes the fonts/colors/size inside each email. Frances wanted to increase the size of the icons on the toolbar in MAIL.

See my post of 9/21.  As I said there …

To change the icon size:

GO To "VIEW" from the menu bar. At the bottom — de-select "Small Mailbox Icons"

The View menu is very handy — spend some time familiarizing yourself with it.

That works for the side bar icons (the various mailboxes), but it does not adjust the icons on the toolbar, which is what Frances was having problems viewing.

Flash, go back and read what Frances asked in Post #1:

The solution for that is to adjust screen resolution.

All menu's are handy, but all of us need a pointer now and then.

I need to apologize for my being unable to follow this thread.
I am simply getting too old to communicate reliably with others.
I will try to do better, or refrain from shooting off my mouth.

We all have been guilty of misinterpreting posts/threads.  If I only had a dollar for each time I misread a post.... rolleyes.gif
