Title: AppleWorks fonts print incorrectly.

I still like to use AW 6.2.4 for basic word processing. (I find it simpler, faster, and easier to use than Pages.)
Lately when I print an AW doc, the actual font changes... sometimes. I can see the correct font on my screen - Arial, Palatino,Myriad Pro, etc. But the printed font is some sans serif font with poor letter spacing.
Helvetica and Comic fonts print OK.
How can I fix this?

24" iMac. 2.66 GHz. OSX10.5.8

See if Font Book (/Applications) can fix this. Launch FB and select all fonts in the FB window. Then, go to File > Validate Font and see if any of them is corrupt. You can disable or remove the font from there. Also (with all fonts selected), go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates and disable any duplicates.

If that doesn't work, try Font Doctor.

Thanks for the tips; I've been having a similar problem with Appleworks fonts that "got fixed" when I installed Open Office on my G4 Powerbook.  Nice to know I didn't need to do that!

Found I have a duplicate Times Roman - one is from Linotype and the other is from Apple.
Could this be the problem?
Shall I remove checked TR font from here?

I also use Font Agent Pro4 and it shows 2 Times Roman with a red x beside the Apple font.

Should I completely delete one of them using Font Agent Pro?
How best to do that? Which one?

FontBook should show which is corrupt by using the red x.  You can delete that one via FontBook itself. I suppose doing it via the other program should be the same.

It would be a good idea to check your printer's website to see if there are any updates to the printer driver.

I use AW less than 10% of my working time. As a designer, I work mostly with Adobe InDesign CS4, Freehand 11, Photoshop CS4. None of the other applications have problems with those same fonts recently. So why would the issue be with my printer? It doesn't make sense.

I think some of my System dfonts are duplicates of what I use with Font Agent Pro (FAP). So which to remove - the same font in Font Book or the same font in FAP? I have had other duplicate font messages and just work around them, cause I'm not sure how to fix or remove Apple fonts without screwing my OS.

If a font shows up marked with a red x that means it's corrupted. You can remove it with either application. They both are reading the same files. It sounds like you are being switched to Courier or perhaps a version of Lucida which are monospaced.

Do check for an updated driver for your printer. Apple includes drivers in each OS but in some cases the driver may not work well with an old program like AW.  The printer manufacturer may have updated the driver in the meantime.

Here's something else you can do.  Save your AW document as a pdf, open it in Preview and try printing it from there.

Krissel,
I saved the AW doc as a PDF and printed that. The fonts look and print fine.
If I print it as an AW doc, the font changes to another.

When I validated fonts in Font Book, it told me I have a duplicate Times Roman font.
I removed the Times Roman dfont and have a Times Roman Linotype left.
Plus a Times Roman CY, TimesNewRomanPSMT.

When I validate fonts again, it still says I have a Times Roman dfont duplicate!

I have no idea if this relates to the AW issue.
Can you offer more advice, please?

How did you "remove" the duplicate and from where? You have at least three font folders; /System/Library/Fonts, /Library/Fonts and ~/Library/Fonts plus another one for every account/user you've set up. And, then there are the Adobe installed fonts, just in case one of their installers finds the drive is not completely full...

You can to a get info (Command + I) on each font by highlighting it first.  It will show you info as to where it is located and what kind and version it might be.

Often you will have one in the main library for the system and one in your user font folder. Notice in the above example that one is a newer version so I probably would keep that one and disable the other.  Actually, unless a font is corrupted, it really isn't all that critically bad if you have duplicates.  Mainly saving hard drive space, RAM usage and clutter is the reason to remove duplicates.  

If you are the only one using the computer you don't have to be concerned that removing a font from the main library will make the font not available to other users. However there are some fonts that the system needs but Times is not one of them.

Since Leopard, you usually would get a warning if you try to remove a system font.

Linotype's Times Roman is the default Apple Mac OS X font for serif/roman generic font family. Monotype's Times New Roman is installed by default in latest versions of Mac OS X (e.g. 10.4).

Try checking the duplicates one by one and see where they are and validate them.  If the only thing that fails is the fact that they are a duplicate you can just disable one and see if it has anything to do with the printing. It can be reenabled.

It may take some experimenting to see if AW will print properly.  Do check for any printer updates, though.
