As we all know, my old Soccer ball is gone, so I hooked my old 6 year old Epson CS5400 scanner/printer combo up to this new 24 inch iMac. It prints fine, but only using PSCS5, will not recognise any other program. Which I can deal with OK.
But to scan, nothing works, not even Preview which crashes.
Any advice, I really need to scan stuff badly.
And Im a bit leery of getting the new iMac since the Fast Money thing on the financial TV networks tonight saying Apple is on the cusp of a new OS!
I guess I can photo stuff with one of our cameras,,,,,,lame way to have to do stuff.
Thanks,
Jane

First, "TV" is for entertainment and occasionally for weather alerts (although usually overdone). It most definitely not a place for computer information.

Second, so what if Apple brings out the next version of X, your new machine will handle it without any strain!
Third, visit the printer/scanner companies site and get the latest drivers. Also, make sure you have the latest TWAIN plug-in.
Finally, have you tried accessing the scanner with Image Capture? Since you can print to it, the USB (assumed connection) should not be the problem.

It alwsys seems to do the 'overview' but the 'scan' button is always grayed out no matter which program I try.
Here is what it looks like with Image Capture or Preview, screenshot of a silly birthday card EyePod.

I'm sure Epson will have a driver available; I was able to get drivers for both my 6-year-old Epson scanner and my 10-year-old HP printer (now at the 14 year mark)!

Hi Jane,
Not sure which operating system you have on that 24" iMac, but here's the link to all the latest drivers for that Epson:
CX5400 drivers
According to your profile, looks like Leopard on that machine. Recently, we got our daughter's old all-in-one Epson back. Just kept spitting out blank pages or pages with one small character on them. The solution was to download the drivers from Epson, open up the installer program, use the uninstall command, then reinstall the new driver downloaded from Epson. Make sure you do uninstall the old driver before you install the new one. Looks like for the CX5400 that there is a stand alone uninstall program,"Scan Uninstaller, v.1.0", the second download available on the page above.

WHoops, forgot to un-install the old drivers, didnt say that on their site, so I better do that right now.
Wont even show up in Import with Elements of PS, and that used to be where everything print and scan worked on the old 20inch iMac.
Sure looks like this is a big problem from this Adobe forum,
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3062985
WHen I get ready to buy the new 27 inch, the store owner said that he will be having a special in about 3 weeks which will be a brand new HP scanner/printer for $49.
I wonder if that would be compatible with the new machine? Ive never had problems with any other scanner or printer before.
Seems strange that it prints fine using PS but not Elements.

Find does not come up with TWAIN anything.
Restarted the Mac, still nothing with PSE, Preview, or Image Capture. The Scanner previews and makes its regular noise and you see the light passing over the window under the cover, but everything is either grayed out or with PSE, no Import for CX5400.

Hi Jane,
This program is not free, but you can try it for free to see if you can run your scanner on it: VueScan
In the meantime, I would also run the Epson scanning uninstaller program again, twice, as it's quite possible you may now have two sets of driver software installed. I don't know if the uninstaller program would recognize both at the same time, but it wouldn't hurt to try that approach, and see what happens the second time you run it. If it can't find anything to uninstall you'll probably get an error message to that effect.

Jane,
When I upgraded to 10.6, I had problems installing the 10.6 Epson drivers. I repaired permissions, just on a whim, and Disk Utility found a couple of Epson permissions that were bad. It fixed them and then the installation went without a hitch. This may or may not help you but it won't hurt to try.

Installed, uninstalled, did it several times, now I get an error message, and the scanner wont even make a noise or give a preview as it did before.
Still prints like a charm though.
What a pathetic mess, we would think that Epson could do better than this.
Even tried just hitting the Scan button on the Epson itself and letting its own software do it.
Yup, time for a new scanner.
Though first I think I will repair permissions and see if that helps.

Not sure what you're using to search with but I've got 33 files with "TWAIN" in their name. Many also have Brother in the name, since that's where my scanner is. I don't know how you'll get a scanner (or a camera, for that matter) to be seen as an image capturing device without having at least one TWAIN driver.
It should be an item of the printer's driver installs.
-
Thats what I figured too, I searched again this morning after uninstalling and installing again.
It still prints OK.
Here is a screenshot, Its odd that it says 2009 and not yesterday when I reinstalled it from Epson's site.

Here is the answer right on Epsons faq page.
Its a big NO for Intel based Macs, so I guess its time for a new scanner.
So I better start to see if I can get this Image Capture thing to work, its the one which has "SCAN" grayed out, just as Preview did.

Use VueScan.
Hewlett Packard are no better tbh.
Just buying a new computer can completely obselete a fairly new printer/scanner.
I use VueScan - it is worth the money imho and I have got my scanner back.
-
I think VueScan will save my hide.
I will try it tomorrow morning!
Thank you!
After seeing that 'message' from Epson that they dont support these new Intel Macs, means to me, to dump Epson.
Can they be so stupid? Epson stuff used to be the best?
Yes, their ink is so expensive and it changes the cartridges from one to another, nothing is compatible, so a store is not going to stock their huge array of cartridges.
They need to wake up.
How can a company who used to be so good, and I can vouch for that, as my ancient Epson is a great machine, how can they screw up so badly.
Lets see what happens tomorrow, its late here.

Just had to try it tonight, and it works just fine, THANK YOU!
You have saved me from tossing this old Epson into the ocean.
For just $39 bucks I can scan again, but its not like PS, but still it WORKS!
