OK - Last night, disconnected iPod after it had been plugged in to the iMac most of the day, without it connecting to iTunes or showing any signs of the battery charging up. No syncing, nothing. Press lower button and screen came alive long enough to show battery icon with extremely narrow red power stripe. Eventually it did let me get to the launch screen but was still not showing as connected to the iMac, though it must have been drawing power through the USB lead. Had tried various permutations during the day of plugging and unplugging from iMac and restarting the iMac.
This morning, I first plugged the iPod Touch into the Mac (same USB socket as yesterday) and then started the Mac. First thing to happen was the white apple icon on the screen. Then it came up with the battery icon showing it fully charged! iTunes then launched and it went through the sync procedure.
FYI: iPod Touch is Model MB528BT, 2G 8GB; OS v 4.1; capacity 6.8GB, available 3.2GB. iMac is running iTunes 9.2.1.
Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on? Please.....?

I can't begin to list all the potential suggestions from that thread including reverting to iOS 3, backing up then resetting to new iPod and restoring from the backup, turning off all app connections (or removing them) that call on the Game Center or push notification, manually turning off the WiFi, not putting the iPod to sleep but actually turning it off, using Airplane mode, etc.
You really need to read through the last 10 pages to glean some of the things that have helped others. The Apple people have not let info on how to downgrade be posted. I went to Google and only typed "downgrade" and immediately the suggestions were for downgrading the iOS so it's a popular item.

Of course, if you don't have any recurring difficulties, then you won't need to do anything. Or maybe some of the user suggestions will help.
In any rate, I'm not going to upgrade my iPod Touch!

To recap - switched off wi-fi and Bluetooth and put it into Airplane mode as well. Will now just switch on wi-fi when it's needed. Like when I use Remote to connect Airport Express to iTunes.

Airplane mode does seem to be the answer for older iPod Touches. If I remember to set to that, I have no problems and can switch it on days later. If I forget, the battery goes dead (as in DEAD!!!!!) again.
So that seems to confirm it as the answer; in my case, at any rate. But it's a bit of a nuisance having to go to settings every time I switch on.....
