My old jcarter.net site with MacHighway is considered a 'legacy' site, and they want you to do this to upgrade, take a look at this link below, it seems a bit beyond me.

This does not look that easy to me, so see what I am going to do instead.

I cannot upload much, they have to re-start the server a lot. So I decided not to do this transfer, Tacit warned me, it might be a bit daunting for a non-techie like me.

 Their latest email said that they will be moving the entire contents of the server over to a new one if I want to wait. They admit they are having problems with it.

But I decided to MOVE MY ENTIRE old site to my new one! Made a new folder and here it is going,,,,,,,,
Its chugging along now and its doing it. Smoking a bit, but its managing to "I think I can, I think I can".

I have no way to see the size of my old site, as there is no C-panel, nor am I really sure of how to use the C-panel on the newer one that Im moving it all to. Guess I will learn fast enuf,,,,,,,
Still chugging, hang in there Comcast! The wires are getting hot,,,,,,,,

Any advice?

We have CPanel here at TS so we can give you some help once you are on it.  Uploading a whole site as a folder is one thing but where did you put it within your new site?.  Give us some more details as you go.

I put the whole thing into my www.jcdouglass.net site into a folder which is jcarter.  I guess my amount of pictures and code are way less than I expected, so my sites are not even scratching the surface of being full. I always upload small file sizes.  

I think I will access the C-panel today and take another look around it.  And will gladly ask questions if I get to where I dont understand things.

I got another email from MacHighway and they are going to take all the sites on their old server and move them all to a brand new server within the next year. Even hinted it would be sooner than that.
They have to keep re-starting the old server.  The email works fine, and I can access the site and pages, its just the uploading thru Transmit that is intermittent.  They fixed the email problem.
They say they are working on the problem.

So if I think I can wade thru their convoluted process of moving it myself, then I might give it a whirl. I do have everthing saved now, and soon as I get a new 1TB external HD for a second back up, I will maybe try it. Pretty complex process and they have many warnings of how to be sure to do it correctly on that scary page. So I wont jump into anything too quickly.

The instructions they provide are pretty straightforward. It's not actually that hard to do; I'm currently hosting about 15 sites on a single server that way. Just follow the instructions step by step and you'll be fine.

Yes, I did read thru them again last night and I probably could do it.  They have phone support which was the way I got the new one set up when I got stuck on something.
The way to set up the email was a bit more convoluted, but probably could get thru that too.

Like Tacit, I read through the instructions too, Jane, and I really do think you can do it. The instructions are very clear - it's much like moving to a new ISP, and having moved several of my clients lately, I can say that it's really not that difficult.

BTW - your jcarter folder seems to be lacking an index.html page - if you add one to the folder, the entire jcarter site will be available intact, with the URL www.jcdouglass.net/jcarter, assuming that you have links from your index page to the rest of the site, of course, and assuming that this is what you want.

Jane, I can see the index page when I go to jcarter.net - but you indicated that you'd moved the entire site to a folder within your jcdouglass.net site - a folder named "jcarter":

If you've done that, if you go to jcdouglass.net/jcarter you should see the index page for the jcarter site. But that doesn't happen - I get a 404 message. Are you sure you put the jcarter folder in the top level folder? (ie: the same folder with the index page for jcdouglass.net)?

Thank you for explaining this!
I tried it too, and got the 404. But then went back to my Transmit lists and looked for what I had named the folder, then plugged it in, got it OK now. I think.

Actually they have it working fine now, and Ive been able to upload to jcarter.net, so I guess I am not going to worry about switching it over. Can wait for them to do all of them together.

Jane, that link gives me a directory - not the index page for the jcarter site. I think you've got a further folder inside that jcarter-site folder that is called "jcarter site, as of 9sept10" - you should really eliminate that and put everything inside the jcarter-site folder or rename that folder "jcarter" for simplicity, and put everything inside that. That way your index page will be the page that is seen.

Generally, any folder on a web site that doesn't have an index page will show up as a text directory (unless viewing of the contents of the directory has been blocked by other means). Index pages are good things - they keep people from rooting around where you don't want them!

When they do the entire transfer to the new server I will just delete this portion.
I have it all on my new hard drive now, but just nervous about losing stuff.
Cant be too careful, having lost 2 Macs within 18 months. Thank god for external hard drives!
I also stuffed my pictures up onto the Mac site and still have plenty of room.

I am so glad to learn this stuff before bad things happen and stuff goes poof!

Yes - I'm just saying that you've got an unnecessary number of folders in there; generally when one is designing for the web, one does NOT want people to see indexes (text listings of links) as you see with your site. However, as you've indicated now, you aren't intending this to be the permanent home for jcarter...

Nope, its just temporary.
I will be getting the new Mac soon and will buy another 1TB external HD also. Then I will take this extra stuff out, and put it all on the external.
jcarter will hopefully be moved to their new server soon.

(I just gave away an old CRT Apple monitor and a whole bunch of old stuff like Zip drives, modems, cables and more. So now Ive got more room here.
Might get a new printer/scanner along with the new Mac, as they usually have a special. And I need a scanner whereby I can do the 35mm slides, though I have a way to do them with our old CoolPix 990 camera with an attachment for the slides. Works well. But it would be nice to be able to do 8 or 10 slides at a time.)
