Okay, I had to stop half-way through -- I'm laughing too hard. So far, this is my favorite:
QUOTE
17. "I work in one of those humble call centres for a bank. Apparently, what we're doing at the moment is sprinkling our magic along the way. It's a call centre, not Hogwarts."
Caroline Garlick, Ayrshire

Far, far too accurate
-
Blame government and military speak. It was anathema to use simple, clearly understood phrases. Someone might actually know what you are doing.

The word that annoys me is "utilize". What ever happened to "use"?
The former is overly utilized.
QUOTE
At my old company (a US multinational), anyone involved with a particular product was encouraged to be a product evangelist. And software users these days, so we hear, want to be platform atheists so that their computers will run programs from any manufacturer."
I always thought it was "platform agnostic".
-
Guess it depends on how convinced you are

From the Free Dictionary
QUOTE
An agnostic does not deny the existence of God and heaven but holds that one cannot know for certain whether or not they exist.
And....
QUOTE
Atheist - One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.
That second one came up on my screen accompanied by an ad for Scientology
Perhaps "platform neutral" would be better
One newspaper I worked for decided to make a whole department of journalists redundant and the HR paperwork was, inevitably, full of jargon. HR people were a bit put out (to say the least) when they got about 50 letters, phone calls and emails asking what it all meant in plain English. The journalists did know, of course - just wanted to make a point.
Oh, and we over here reckon Americans utilise "z" far too often
-
I think "atheist" is not PC enough for the US media. "Agnostic" is less likely to offend anyone so it's used here.

Oh, and we over here reckon Americans utilise "z" far too often

I realize that.

Jargon is the bane of my existence. I've spent more time than I care trying to convince clients that while they may think they're being clever using such indecipherable language, they're really only antagonizing their audience (not a good thing when nonprofits are hitting up donors for more money).

personal stimulus recovery plan: A vacation. Also known as a "personal stimulus program."
We need a "Good grief" smiley......
That's a great site. So glad I've retired.....

Read this and weep....
-
Before I comment, did you have any input to that document?
-
No. I was sent it with a rejection letter when I submitted my DVDs on Shetland for consideration in their tiny shop.
In turn, I nominated it for The Plain English Campaign Golden Bull Award!
Utter, utter drivel but it did make me laugh when I read what I was supposed to be working towards!
-
QUOTE
The Plain English Campaign Golden Bull Award!
Well said, unlike the...drivel. It reminds me of the "Mission Statements" of so many places. I genuinely hope those things are not still being "created!" And even worse, being distributed to hard working employees.
Sometimes it's best to be 'rejected!'
-
They rejected your Shetland DVDs?!?!?!?!?!
What sort of idiots run that shop?!?!?!?!?!
-
My favorite:
QUOTE
•fit the established patterns of spend

Frances, I think you should be honored that your films weren't accepted by that group.
-
What sort of idiots run that shop?!?!?!?!?!
Well, they're not complete idiots. Some parts are missing....
(Sometimes the old jokes come good)
And I agree with Kris!
-
• fully align with the Sumo Identity Guidelines
Japanese wrestling rules for a Shetland museum?
QUOTE
• a 'less is more' approach opting for quality rather than quantity
Pity they didn't apply it to that list!
-
It was the thought of straddling that put me off my cornflakes! And if you knew the chap who sent it (think Roz from Monsters Inc), then you would not even entertain that line of thought!

It's a while since I saw that film and had to call up Google images........

Frances,
You ought to send those people a link to this thread!!!!

Probably not a good idea - it's not a very big island and there aren't many trees to hide behind
-
There are no trees.
I think he knows what I think of him when BBC Radio Scotland rang him up to comment on his Golden Bull nomination!
