Title: The "New" Computer Has Arrived
Post by: MrsLop on June 19, 2003, 05:28:15 PM
Good Evening All,

While I was at Radiation
Treatment this morning,
my "Christmas presents" arrived.  My "Newer" Computer is a 4400 / 200 and came with everything except a correct power cord and a printer.
Since I already had the Personal LaserWriter 320,
I didn't think it would be a big problem to choose my printer and print my personal letter from Bernie.  May I add that, the OS 8.6 is already loaded on the drive.  Well, I did something wrong.  I didn't find my printer in the Chooser, so I selected the LaserWriter 300 because that's the closest to what I had in Model.  I also selected the LaserWriter 8 and put it on my desktop.  Maybe, I am suffering from information overload, but I cannot figure out how to get this printer to work.  To add insult to injury.  I get a voice with each subsequent attempt to print: ...please make sure that the connections to the port..." yadadaada.  Well,my friends, I need your help, in sorting this out.  I cannot find any information that exemplifies this in the two books I now have.  Perhaps, I just need someone to interpret it for me.     thanx.gif

Hi Mrs. Lop... biggrin.gif

So you have your new 'puter...  clap.gif
That was fast!!

Sorry I'm not too bright on printer problems as I don't have one on my Mac, just on my PC so I "do" know they can drive one up the wall... wink.gif

The voices... yeah, OS9.1 is even better! An error gets one "Victoria's" sweet voice declaring "It's not my fault!" before the error message...  wacko.gif

Hang in there and relax... someone will know how to straighten out this one... smile.gif

Evening Dreambird,

I was looking for you.
Where did you disappear to the other night?
remember "Help! I can't view my topics".

Anyway, I surely hope that you are right.

Stay tuned-

Oh Mrs. Lop (I know your name is Myrna, but I love Mrs. Lop) I am so happy for you to begin your new adventure....(and I can't wait for the book and movie) I feel I will be learning alot of "stuff" along with you. I'm pretty much a Mac novice myself....Let the adventure begin..... smile.gif ..trish

Myna. If it was me, I'd turn that voice off. smile.gif

Not sure what it's under. Either Speech or Sound Control Panel.

Go Apple Menu > Control Panels > Speech or whatever.

How do you like 8.6?

I always liked the "three dimensional" Icons in OS 8 and later. smile.gif

Still checking on your Printer problem.

Turn AppleTalk on to begin with.

Myrna. Do you have the Printer plugged in to the Printer Port? smile.gif

The Modem Port will work but complicates things. smile.gif

jawdrop.gif kelly,

Thank Heaven!  I Have been having all sorts of problems getting into Topics.  I had to shut everything down for awhile and delete cookies, the whole nine yards.

I want to apologize for keeping you waiting.

I need to know what to do now.
I got the #@%* Printer up again and it began to print.  Then gave me no end of problems telling me that I had a Printer misfeed.  Honestly, I looked everywhere, and coud find no indication of that.  I won't bore you with all the other things- but now I am stuck in a stop queue.  I have to do something to
get back to that and tell the computer to release the printer to print.

Where do I locate this, I have looked everywhere I could think of, but I can't get back to that screen to release it.

Did you look in the pull down of that upper right hand corner thing I told you about? In my "old system" (G3 with OS 9.2.2) I would find something called Print Monitor or similarly named. (I have two printers connected to the same computer.) The name of it will vary depending on the printer.

If you find something like that, move the mouse down until it is highlighted, then release it. That should bring the Print Monitor window "to the front" of the Finder ("Desktop"). In other words, then you'll be able to see it on your screen.

Try going to the Chooser and turn off background printing. smile.gif

PS. Don't get so hung up on the printing problems Myrna.

What you need to concentrate on is learning the Basics.

And getting connected to the Internet somehow.

Many problems can be  fixed with a simple Download.

For example. Here's the Manual for your Printer.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50128

Useless to you until you're connected.

Relax. Don't concentrate on what isn't working.

Try to enjoy your Present from Bernie. smile.gif

Myrna, you might also want to try turning your printer off for a few minutes, then back on again. Sometimes it gets "confused" by something loaded in its buffer (memory) and then refuses to do anything, stuck on whatever confused it. Turning it off generally clears the buffer. I have to do this occasionally with my laser printer.

If there is really a piece of paper stuck in there, it is possible that removing the toner cartridge may allow you access to it, in case you haven't tried that. Not sure of your exact model, but most of them are pretty similar and removing the toner cartridge is pretty easy. Kelly's manual will give you directions.

MrsLop  Do you have an icon of a printer on your desktop?  Double click it.  You should now see

Go to "Printing"  under that will be "Start Print Queue".

Good Afternoon,
Nice to meet you jepinto!

Welcome to my adventure.

Thank you all.

You would not believe what I have done in the name of trying to get one page printed.

I have been in and out of files, applications and etc.
Visited the Help menu numerous times.
Plugged and unplugged my Printer from ALL connections.
Restarted the Computer.

Is there such a thing as Virtual Printing.  Is my Printer "stuck" in some non existent situation?
Does it believe that there is a paper misfeed.

I am so vexed with ths machine that I am about to give it a Paper misfeed, just to give it something real to think about.
I thought computers and all these electronic  were supposed to make our lives easier, faster, simpler.  Instead, I am finding that it is the reverse.  A degree in software engineering would be nice and courses in software programming and skills for hardware basics.  I could get a typewriter, the good old manual kind to type things out faster than this.  Thank you for letting me vent.
The deed is done, people,
my friendly cable company will be here on Tuesday to install the high spped internet line.  They will supply the connections for a tidy fee of $ 79.00 for installation and $ 60 for the modem.  Due to my two existing services with them I get a generous $ 10.00 off the Cable.  The actual cost of the new service is
$ 39.95 a month.  Lucky me, I get to pay for the modem and the installation in three monthly payments!  To be sure, this is a costly service.  In any event, I am looking forward to having the service.

Hi Myrna... smile.gif

Sorry I missed you the other day... not to worry, I wasn't ignoring you... some days I just get distracted more than others...

I see you're still fighting with the printer? They can be obnoxiously stubborn, but once you get it going it'll be fine.

Oh, Myrna. . ."easier, faster, simpler" indeed! They also told us that these machines would reduce the use of paper in offices, and various other fables!  I think these are the same people that told us that "government is by the people, for the people. .  ."!  (Excuse the cynicism; I'm pretty sure that I wasn't always this way.)  Hang on, though, and things will become easier and less frustrating for you.  The first time I screwed up my first Mac, it cost me over $200 to take it to the "Mac Guy", who I'm sure ran Norton Utility & Diskwarrior, but I didn't have a bunch of people to help me, and you do, so "we" should never have to go there!  Believe me, once everything is working, the frustration will go away, and you'll love your new "world"!

Good evening Mrs. Lop,

Printers do sometimes have a mind of their own, like computers.  tongue.gif

Mine often gives me the paper misfeed message or tells me that there is no paper though I am looking at it in front of me. What I do is press a Pause/Clear button on the front of the machine which you might have on yours. Check your manual for any such button listed. Even then it sometimes goes right back into the same problem. At that point I take out the paper, flip through it like a deck of cards and put it in reverse or upside down. Believe it or not, there is a right and wrong side of the paper. Most times it doesn't matter but some printers are really picky. With some types of paper I have to take my finger and lightly push the first page toward the roller that drags it in to print. Once it gets the first page it goes OK with the rest. You also don't want to put too much paper in the tray at one time, too. And the advice to turn off the printer for a minute is also helpful. That has "cured" occasional problems.

My fellow TSers will tell me that I need to adjust the trays, rollers, feeders, etc. and yes, I know that, but it's like a leak in the roof. If it's not raining you don't think about it. If it is raining, you try to work around the drops.   wacko.gif

Hey there Mrs Lop. I think Kelly's advice is good about learning the basics first. But you might have importance now about the need of printing.  Just hang in there, Relax. Don't let the Mac intimidate you. Just remember one thing at a time. TS is here to help you smile.gif
Did you set your date and time in the "Date and Time control panel" ??

MrsLop, Howdy!  Nice to meet you too.

When you were gifted with the printer, was it working?  Is it the computer telling you "paper misfeed" or is it the light(s) on the printer?

Paper jams are sometimes a symptom of other problems unsure.gif but read these

I'll be gone for a day or two, (More bowling!!!) but will check in on Monday.

Double check your connections, unplug, replug. Go to Control Panels>Appletalk and turn it off, or set it to connect via Remote only, the 320 doesn't use AT.

Hello Dreambird,
I have a very stubborn streak, that I thought was gone.  I can get very focused and just refuse to be bested by a "machine." In the end, I employed a "Sherlock Holmes" attitude, and used reasoning and minute observation to aid me.  Since I have been having trouble with getting into the TS Forum, I needed to try to work things out on my own, with a few pointers from some TS members. I had to think like a Printer Driver.  It seemed to work.
No problem, BTW your being distracted, after the events of the last several days, I can truly understand...I just miss hearing from you is all.   thanx.gif

Hello beacher,

I agree with you. Gee, I always loved Fairy Tales and fables...

I never begrudge anyone making a living in the computer field, or elsewhere.  I just cannot afford to help them earn it!

I am really happy to have found TS, to help me in my own adventures.

Hello kriss,

Well, I don't have any buttons on the LaserWriter 320.  I have to unplug it every time I use it.  I don't have a manual, either.  That is what makes for the "adventures" part in:  "The Adventures of MrsLop in Mac Land,"
to make matters worse, I had not been very successful in getting on the TS Forum to even look at the help that was written in some of the replies.  Remember our conversation from the other night.  Yes, that's WebTV / MSN for you..
I just wanted to say  thanx.gif Stay tuned -

Well Hello Bernie,

I hope that you have gotten some rest!

Yes, I set the time and date functions, first thing.
I got lots of practice at setting the time and date on the "old" mac that I was given.  I even learned how to change the PRAM Battery and look at how it was set up before your gift arrived.

Until every piece is set into place, I will find it pretty hard to relax.

I am still trying to learn the Basics.  I will in my "adventures" probably get myself into things I don't understand as yet, just to get some practical things done.
Take printing for example...
I'm just glad you're here to reassure me.

 thanx.gif

Hello Again, jepinto,

I realize you may not see this reply until Monday, however, the links to that site were very, very helpful.

Now, about bowling: I tried bowling once, I lobbed the ball, which then proceeded to land in the alley NEXT to mine!
I am so thankful that I didn't hurt anyone or anything.  That was another of my "adventures!"

I hope you have a wonderful trip and enjoy!

Stay tuned - let "us" know all about your trip when you return. thanx.gif

I hope that this is just a temporary adjustment that my body needs to make.

clap.gif Well it's "the man" himself,

Good Afternoon kelly,

The faster I go, the behinder I get...

I am working around the WebTV / MSN problem to get to the TS Forum, but at least I can get here - for right now.

Thursday, I had to get
"vampired." that is my not so polite description of having my blood work done.  Now, I have veins that are sometimes very stingy they just seem to disappear.  The woman who was "vampiring" me missed the vein entirely.  Oouch!  So, I got vampired twice - both times it hurt.  Yes, I do get weary.  I have posted an explanation so that everyone is on the same page about where MrsLop is.  I wouldn't want Bill to have to go and post an inquiry as to my whereabouts.  Worse yet, to see my image on the side of a Milk Carton
with the question " Have you seen this woman...?   LOL.
I am going to try to get my rest and   I won't worry about things - after all, you are still here!
Thanks for your concern, I really appreciate that.   thanx.gif

The award for the best link of the day goes to...
jepinto

I am a very contented woman.  Through the link
fixyourprinter.com, I was able to get some other tips about my printer.  It seems there was a very flimsy pin which had popped out of it's holder.  The Blue button tip helped me to get my
printer to feed the paper out of the top thereby ending the constant sound of the Star Trek like voice saying: "excuse me, your printer LaserWriter 320 has  paper misfeed."
What had been happening was, the errant pin was supposed to hold the feed in a different position than what it was, and the Blue Button was in the correct feed up mode, I think, but I'not sure, that the misfeeding made the paper either curl, causing a real misfeed; or pop the back door open which caused the light to come on, as though it were a real paper misfeed.  Whatever it was, MrsLop (alias, Mrs Fixit) is happy to say the printer is now behaving reasonably well and has printed it's 7425 sheet.
Thank you jepinto for the best link of the day! thanx.gif

Good Evening All,

I awoke in the middle of the night last night to the most horrific sound.
Rolling thunder that sounded lke it was in the attic above me and lightening flashed that were so bright it made it seem like it was morning!
The thunder was interminable, it seemded not to be moving away, but went on and on...
The fire and emergency vehicles went by shortly after the thunder and lightening stopped.  Iknew then, that someoe's house must have been hit. It knocked out power in a good sized neighborhood  in a nearby city.
I had to get up and see if the computer was alright.  Everything was fine.
I had to sing this morning with choir, we had four Baptisms this morning, and Mass seemed to go on forever.
I just hate it when I have my sleep interrupted
and have something important to do first thing in the morning.  I was exhausted.  I came home, had breakfast and went to sleep.  I have been sleeping on and off
all day.  I tried to read the Mac Bible but I wasn't able to grasp anything in the way of concepts.  Now here it is 10:53 EST and I am wide awake. I have to try to get to bed, as I am back to Radiation first thing
tomorrow. Tomorrow is another adventure for me and I will lt you know what it is all about - later!
Gregg - thank you, I needed that pat on the back.
Dreambird - are you sure it didn't hear you?

Welcome back, jepinto,

How was your bowling trip?

I will be going to get some computer stuff today.  I need to figure out why the print is  smeared, in spots, when they come out of the printer.  Maybe, I have to do a little cleaning.

As for sending me any broken printers to fix

The trip was grand.  Good food, good friends, weather was somewhat nice Saturday evening, got to walk the beach, play in the waves, picked up some itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot......seashells (down, Bill, I did NOT say bikinis).

Oh...you asked about bowling.....let's just say it's a good thing I keep my day job....we were a bit off, so no glory, but we had a good time.

And don't feel bad about bowling in someone else's lanes.  If they wanted tto bowl all by them lonesomes, they'd build their house.  Durn people just gotta learn to share!  devilishgrin.gif

Morning jepinto,

Well everyone has different gifts.  I looked more like a softball pitcher in that bowling alley.

When I say that I lobbed the bowling ball, I mean, it went totally up in the air and sideways, came crashing down into the next lane (about half way down the lane) and then down into the gutter.
Needless to say, people were not amused.

I did finally learn how to control the direction after a while, but I never could really shine in that sport.  At best, I was mediocre and at worst...well we won't talk about that.

My favorite part of the whole thing was the banquet at the end of the League year. LOL

Sooo, you've been picking up 'skimpy' seashells have you?

Good Evening All,

After the machinations I put my Personal LaserWriter 320 through, it began producing print with streaks and smears on all my pages.  No, I don't think it was being creative.

Today, I decided to treat it to a nice little cleaning.  After picking up the supplies at Staples: One can of compressed air, with monitor cleaner and cloth and one package of laser cleaner papers.

After thoroughly  blowing out the dust inside, removing the toner cartridge and giving that a good spray as well, I am  happy to report that the printer is printing out clean, legible copies.

As my computer is currently residing on my dining room table, I had a quick look at computer furniture while at Staples. I was shocked at the prices of what is stamped out particle board with a thin coating of simulated wood graining.  It is definitely time for me to go to some tag sales/ moving sales.
It would be nice to reclaim my dining room table for the purpose for which it was intended.

Hi Mrs. Lop,

I've been watching your threads since you joined...just haven't had anything unique to add to your adventures until now..smile.gif

About a desk. Consider a generic table like this one at:
Office Depot

We use these...the cheap kind...and they've lasted for years. My husband and I work side by side and we each have one. Another sits behind us to be used as work space for spreading out papers and such...(It also collects junk but that's not its purpose. blush-anim-cl.gif. For that matter the one I have my monitor on also collects junk which is why it will never be in one of the "galleries" that pop up here when people start talking about their work space. doh.gif )

These tables so useful, ..slide a small filing cabinet under part of it, in my case the tower is under one end. It holds my monitor on a keyboard "drawer" (purchased separately), keyboard that hides leaving a space to write on,(also means that as long as the keyboard is out and in use, junk can't collect on that spot so when I push it into the drawer, there is alway a clean spot tongue.gif ), a laser printer and that box of junk and assorted papers, a lamp, a paper stand, speakers...arrange it however it best suits. The price can hardly be beat...we got ours on sale for approx $30.

Just an option..smile.gif Nice to meet ya. smile.gif

see ya,

Hello and thanx.gif Diana,

Nice to meet you and welcome into the adventure.
I was just looking at a similar one at Staples
on sale for $ 30.00.

I love a really good deal.
Sometimes, people who are moving have really nice things which they just can't fit into a new house. Some change  their decor or bought a brand new one.

I like real wood.  Most computer tables are made of particle board.  It's a good thing that I like a good challenge, too.

It may take a little looking around but I'll find something.
*******
Stop back anytime and don't feel you have to say anything profound - Just a "Hi MrsLop" is welcome.

That invitation extends to the rest of you lurking around out there too! Come on in and be a part of my "adventure".

Good Morning kelly,

Goodwill in RI consists of one store.  We have a good many more Salvation Army stores and consignment stores.

During the good weather, my husband and I are often out going to tag sales and the like.  I have often found really good things at them.
Two weekends ago, I found a solid wood Mahogany  desk chair with ball casters for $ 5.00 for my husband's office. I knew what it was before I even got out of the car.
It was made by the same company that provides furniture for Congress and the White House. They are heavy and solid.
$ 10.00 is a good price for a decent computer desk. When I see them they are usually in the $25.00 range at a yard sale.

Thanks for triggering the thought of other sources.
