This has been covered here before, altho I can't find it now.
It involves putting your original Tiger install CD in, and booting from it.
If I remember right, there is something on the Apple menu about resetting your password.
Hopefully somebody else with a far better memory than mine will chime in here and give you the details.

Changing your password won't change anything else. I don't know why you need one, all of a sudden. FWIW, I have not entered a password either; I use a blank space. In 10.6, that will prevent you from using sudo in Terminal if you need temporary root privileges but other than that, there aren't any consequences that I can see, assuming that nobody has access to your computer.
If I need to run sudo, I go to System Preferences > Accounts and create a password. When finished, I change it back to a blank space.

The system will ask for a user name and password on login IF you have it set to require that at login. Don't know how or why this setting was changed from what you no doubt had before (Automatic Login) but it obviously has.
Go to System Preferences->Accounts. Click on the Lock at the bottom left - you'll need to enter your user name and PW (blank, in your case). Then click on "Login Options" and enable Automatic Login for your user name. It's no doubt in the "Off" position right now.
And that should be the end of that problem.
I do assign a PW to our Macs - figure it's just one little step that helps slow down anyone blithely installing stuff without paying attention, or someone trying to get onto our network, in that unlikely event. Of course, it depends on your situation. If you have a laptop that regularly leaves the house with you and has important data on it, you should have a PW and also disable automatic login - and perhaps require the PW to wake from sleep as well. Or if you have a multi-user Mac and want to keep other users out of your stuff, a PW is an obvious choice.
