Cupcakes are the "big thing" now. I suppose eating a few small cupcakes makes us think we are saving calories by not eating a large piece of cake. Of course, it is also probably more enticing to display a tray full of cup cakes than several cakes with pieces missing, even if the crumbs are removed. Who wants a piece of left-over cake?! And it is always difficult to get equal sized bites from that wedge shape...they start out too small and end up requiring multiple, ever more complicated carvings to whittle down the big end...
