Title: USB adapter query
Post by: RHPConsult on February 18, 2011, 01:41:38 PM
Since 1980, I have been increasingly hearing-impaired. My personal friends know how much I admire the qualities of the Oticon company's hearing instruments. My current instruments have what has become an essential accessory - a Streamer which sends and receives bluetooth signals from telephones and TVs equipped with what are called ConnectLine transmitters. ConnectLine-Streamer description

I am currently searching for an AC adapter (5v, 2500 mA) for charging the Streamer which has an exceptionally long cable for its mini-USB connector. The OEM version I have is about 6 feet long. I like to find one that's 10-12 feet if such exists. A needle in a haystack appears to be an apt comparison to my quest.

Does anyone have a clue as to an on-line supplier that might have such a device? Alternatively, I would be happy with something along the lines of an "extension cord", similar to what one can find for a telephone line cord, so to extend its length.

So far my searches have been unproductive.

RHP, I think you'll have trouble finding the right adapter with a longer cable - I'm having trouble just finding an AC to Mini-USB adapter with the right specs, let alone the longer cable. The trouble is, there is nothing universal about any of these adapters!

A USB extension cable is marginally(!) easier to find and no worries about whether or not it's the right voltage etc.

These extensions appear to be scarcer than hens' teeth. I found more posts on forums from people LOOKING for them than actual listings!

The fact that it was difficult seems never to have deterred you in any past searching, Paddy. I know that as a direct "beneficiary"!

There is a 6ft extension in that catalogue with would easily due the trick (if "compatible"), and I'm waiting to hear back from their Tech Support folks about whether they think it will be so for the stated voltage/mA criteria.

Thank you, so very much, Paddy . . . and for so many times over the years.

Added note @ 3:17pm

VERY nice folks at USBFirewire.com. Of course, they're Kansans, so that explains a lot, right gunug? I got 6 ft extension (plus a "ferrite bead" for good measure) for about 15 bucks.

The trouble is, there is nothing universal about any of these adapters!

As an aside, the days of having a different charger for every mobile phone look like coming to an end, after Europe pushed the makers to standardise.

At last, a sensible idea coming out of the EU toothgrin.gif

Yes - and Canada (and I presume the US) are following suit, though for cell phones only, which all have pretty much the same power requirements...for everything else, it's still a mess, though given the different voltage requirements etc. of all the different devices, I don't expect much improvement.

Unfortunately my "new" (August 2010) cell phone is not among the standardized lot - it's got a plug that looks a little like mini-USB but isn't.
