Title: Apparent "gotcha's" in uninstalling iWorks 08, 09

I have been trying to pin down a problem that a MacPro (Intel, 10.6) is having in opening files into iWork.  This machine had iWork 08 and 09 both installed and I thought it was "confused" about what to load it into.  I tried uninstalling both versions and reinstalling but now I'm getting a message that includes:

QUOTE
Numbers cannot be opened because of a problem.

Check with the developer to make sure Numbers works with this version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.

Dyld Error Message:
    Library not loaded: @rpath/Inventor.framework/Version/C/Inventor
    Referenced from: /Library/Application Support/iWork '09/Frameworks/SFCompatibility.framework/Versions/A/SFCompatibility
    Reason: image not found

I'm thinking I have to go and delete stuff in preferences.  Any thoughts about anything else?

I'm not sure why you'd keep both '08 and '09 versions installed. '09 will save documents as '08 if you need to send that version to someone without '09.

If you double-click an '08 file, it could be opened by either version. Then, if you aren't careful, you could save it as an '09 version creating confusion the next time you specifically ask '08 to open it. wacko.gif That's a common problem with any app that updates/changes file formats/capabilities of course.

Unless you absolutely, positively need the '08 version around, I'd just uninstall it [all apps, not just Numbers, BTW] (and the pref file(s)). Then, re-install '09. A Restart might also help. Then, select any '08 document and do a Get Info on it. Change the "Open with..." to the '09 version and click the 'Change All...' button.

Second thoughts, prior to deleting the '08 versions, make an archive of the three apps and the registration info for them. Then store them on an external drive, DropBox, DVD, etc. You can't be too safe! eek2.gif

John, all you needed to do was uninstall '08, but since you uninstalled both, there are things that got left behind that are interfering with '09 for some reason or other. Did a search for your error message and found the following thread on the Apple forums. It's mostly people who have tried to install the full version with a trial version, but the results of that appear to be the same and the solution may work. Around about page 4 of the thread there are lists of files that need deleting. The thread was extremely slow to load for me, so I didn't read through the whole thing, which you might want to do. wink.gif

I may be wrong, I think I remember being wrong once...but I think this may be related to Apple's decision to stop using four-character TYPE and CREATOR codes on document files many years ago. Those codes could easily contain the version of the app that created them. Now, there is only the file name suffix, although Apple seems to think there is a better way, no one else seems interested in getting it to actually work (including Apple). So all Pages documents have ."pages" suffixes, Numbers have ".numbers" and Keynote has ".key". No clue as to which version of the app created them. Period. Of course, if this method was good enough for the rest of the world of computing, it should be good enough for Apple, right? rolleyes.gif

Paddy - The first thing I did was uninstall '08 and that didn't solve the problem.  It seemed to go "brain dead" and not know that it had either version installed to begin with. . ."can't find that app."  So I escalated into uninstalling and reinstalling stuff!

This would seem like a definitive list of things to delete from that thread on the other forum:

^^ I would suggest using this method! It cleans everything and really works the best. Better safe than sorry. Thanks so much!


Deleting all of the above and then rebooting and reinstalling iWorks 09 seems to have done the job in all but one regard.  In that one it seems that the access to that file is set on the server to "custom" and I guess  I'm going to have to dig on things to see where this is done.  I copied that file, within the same directory, and everything is okay with the copy.

With the one that the OS thought was correct already deleted, it just told you what it knew. I suspect that the document had last (or originally) been used by the version you deleted; '08. Despite what I posted earlier, the OS may be 'smart' enough to know that it was a '08 document so it told you the truth...the app that makes/uses/edits this file "can't be found." Perhaps when the OS can also undelete several weeks worth of stuff, it won't have to tell us that it "can't find that app." wink.gif Instead it will just say, "You know you deleted that app 52 days ago. I think it is generally asking for trouble to have more than one app with exactly the same name. Even though methods like Sparkle have made updating nearly immune to this sort of problem, I append the name of any app I archive with its version number. And, I always archive an app before installing an update. iPhone app updating seems to do a good job of removing old stuff. Of course, that's great since I have no readily available way of archiving those apps or reverting to the previous version... sad.gif

Sometimes the installer/developer specifically states that there is no need to uninstall an old version, but you are then trusting the installer to remove things that might cause problems. With users capable of moving stuff who knows where, why or how, why take the chance? rofl.gif

I'm going to be reinstalling CS3 today on a different teachers iMAC because since he installed software for a "document camera" (ELMO) it has been very reluctant to open Photoshop.  I upgraded the version of ELMO software to a newer one and it helped for awhile. Thinking.gif I'm thinking that I'm seeing similar sorts of problems that I'm used to seeing under Windows XP; there is too many apps loaded and they're conflicting and interacting in unexpected ways.

While it's possible that there are conflicts between third party apps - often older apps conflicting with newer - they're not all that common these days. System haxies definitely can cause problems of course but as someone with 327 applications installed (none of them haxies), I have a hard time believing that "too many apps" is the problem! Specific apps can be an issue, but I don't think sheer number is the problem. wink.gif

Have you looked at the manual for the ELMO camera's software? There sure seem to be an awful lot of "and this may not work..." type statements in there - I suspect the software itself may not be all that great. dry.gif

Many apps, especially those that work with images, like to be notified and take control of whatever device gets connected to the computer. Most allow setting another appmto do the downloading in their prefs. Of course, Apple has the same set up and usually it's iPhoto/iTunes/etc that the OS expects to be the default. So, the 'conflict' is sort of built-in. And it's not always obvious the the user that it even exists. I'd suggest checking the prefs in ELMO for such a conflict, especially if the file format is generic.
