"Steve is comparing the dual G5 to a dual 3 GHz at Dell, and the Dell system is US$4,031.  Steve made a comment about Apple's high end offering being more competitive than PCs.  Ignores low end.

Steve says again that it is fastest personal computer in the world.  Comparing Spec tests.  Using GCC 3.3, and VeriTest to do independent test.  G5 didn't beat the P4 and Xeon for single processor systems in SpecInt (10% slower), but beats both in Floating point (21%)

In dual processor: Dual Xeon spanks Dual P4, and G5 beats both.  Spanks both in floating point. This is what Apple is basing the "world's fastest computer" statement."

Where DID that green-with-envy smilie go???

Amazing - prices are LESS than any top-end machine I can remember. Start saving boys and girls....

You're welcome.

Ok...found something to grumble about...wink.gif - why does this lovely new speedster have only ONE optical drive bay? Seems a bit odd to me...

Kinda looks like a little filing cabinet in the pictures. It's slightly taller than the existing G4's (or my Sawtooth, at least), but otherwise pretty much the same size.

Hit the "buy" button on several occasions, just to see what I'd be looking at if I really could afford one of these babies tomorrow and it never loads. Either there are swarms of people trying to order the thing, or they haven't finished updating the pages.

One thing's for sure - don't buy your RAM from Apple!!!! They want $250 to upgrade you to 2 512MB RAM modules. You can get an additional 512MB module to toss in there for $80 or so, yielding the same overall total. dry.gif

Don't know where they're getting those 1 GB modules, but OUCH. Not cheap at $500 for two of them. 'Course if you get 8 of them, it's only $3,500. There's something VERY odd about the math....let's see, if you buy MORE of them, we'll charge more for EACH. HUH?

2 1GB modules - add $500 ($250 each)
4 1GB modules - add $1,500 ($375 each)
8 1 GB modules - add $3,500 ($437.50 each)

You can get those 1 GB modules for about $174 each (PriceWatch.com search) - so, um...I don't think anyone in his/her right mind is going to be buying 'em from Apple. wacko.gif

Sweet!!!! biggrin.gif

I wish I hadn't spent my money on my eMac now- should have kept saving and would have been able to afford the G5 at the end of the summer.

Can't they be clocked well beyond the current points?

Been thinking about the one bay and looks.
Looks ... put a bag over it. <gr>
Bay ... jury is still out on that.

Saw some folks wondering about only room for two drives.
Why would anyone need more?

That's funny. biggrin.gif I don't know why. huh.gif

As far as the looks go.....kind of retro 50's. Square lines like the old PCs. Looks like it belongs in the kitchen next to the stainless steel sink.

My G4 will last me for a while. I still don't understand the size of the front side bus.

My G4 has a 133 MHz and this has an  800MHz, 900MHz on the singles and a 1GHz on the duels.

Backside cache 512k where as the G4s have a 2Mb. I guess I don't know much at all.

I'm glad too that Apple going in a different direction ..... so long as my software and the stuff I'm buying works with the 64 bit architecture.

It will be interesting in the weeks and months ahead to see how the PC community reacts to this and it will also be fun seeing how these new puppies perform in the real world. Exciting.....No?

I'm no CPU specialist, but the new front side bus and cache is part of the new architechture of the 970 CPU.
Perhaps you have noticed Gary, the IBM chip doesn't have a L3 cache at all (while the G4 had up to 2 MB).
The large cache of the G4 was Motorola's last effort to squeeze the last bit of power out of the G4 chip.

The big cache of the G4 was often critizied. But I can't tell you why or why it was so bad.

As for the design, I am not quite sure if I like the front.
And I definitely don't like the fact that it only has one optical drive.

Nonetheless, I am going to order one. smile.gif
