Title: A new Mac?

I am considering a new Mac, my 3 year old G4, OS 9.2.2 is all I really need, but with all this talk about the new Macs?????? and OS X is supposed to be really really nice too,,,,,
The word is I "want",  not I "need".  

I am not a gamer, not iMovie user, don't use DVDs, I mostly use Photoshop and Elements of Photoshop, and some Illustrator and GoLive.

All the information is a bit confusing to me, and that is why I want to ask the opinion of you experts here, before I even start to shop.

Do you think that an iMac would be sufficient for me?  The iMac with the 17" flat panel monitor is nice.

What about the video card, would the power of that effect my work with Photoshop?  Would it be better to get the best one?
Could the machine be customized to fit my needs?
I would plan to add all the RAM that the machine would hold.
With the new G5 coming soon, perhaps the prices of the older ones would drop somewhat.

Jane. The 17" imac would be a nice machine for you. smile.gif

It's Video card would do ok with Photoshop.

Only customizing you could do is RAM and Hard Drive.

The price of the G4 Towers is down.

  If you don't need the latest/greatest there are some nice deals to be found on the current crop of G4s such as these. smile.gif


For about the same price as the 17 in. iMac you can get a sp 1GHz Power Mac and a 17in. Apple Studio Display.

The thing is that the new Macs are a little bit more expensive than the G4's, however, the newer the computer you buy now, the longer you can put off posting this same thing in the near future. Although the G4's have dropped in price, and are nice machines, there is really no competition with the G5's. It's like putting a 1Ghz G4 against my 8600/300. You will probably benefit more from buying a new machine, even if it's the entry class one for just a little more than the midrange G4.
